lehigh university brown and white mmmmmmmmmmmitmimi vol 86 — no 21 bethlehem pa tuesday november 13 1t73 .■_■__•.__•.__..•___■■__■.■* ■.■.■.'.■-.■-■.■.■.■.•..■.*.•.■_.__■■.•. .. v v.v.-.w.v.v.v . 215-86s-0331 sac schedules concert snyder defends council by joe tartaglia and gary levine mark linder 75 publicity chairman of the student activities council sac announced that he was able to procure the jazz band return to forever with chick corea on nov 20 m packard lab auditorium the council voted unanimously to have the concert sac treasurer dave bracket t 74 said it will sell out and concert chairman jim shanley 76 said he hoped the concert might spark some interest m jazz at lehigh sac also is sponsoring a blue grass bottle hill concert on dec 8 shanley said the band's concert was very popular last year at lehigh the ticket price should be about 1.50 shanley said that they were a damn good band and the concert should be good in place of the nov 15 concert on lafayette weekend the council plans to have a small local group atlantis the movie casino royal and some w c fields short films will be shown m packard lab auditorium there will be a 50 cent charge for the movie shanley has also begun investigating a possible major concert on feb 8 keith snyder sac president said m a previous meeting that with the continued financial and moral support of the residence halls council rhc and the interfraternity council ifo groups charging up to 8,000 should be within our price range when the list of available groups is compiled it will be distributed to all ifc and rhc representatives so they can poll their student constituents on whom they would like to see m concert during the meeting shanley accused snyder of over-stepping his power by calling an agent for the feb 8 concert without notifying him shanley is m charge of selecting the list of possible groups he also accused snyder of being influenced by brown and white criticism snyder in sisted he was not over-stepping his authority and denied some of shanley s charges throughout the heated discussion sac members made various comments against brown and white reporting snyder said b & w photo by cramer how about wayne newton vsac social chairman jim shanley and president keith snyder at a recent sac meeting district attorney releases report on bujcs death by kevin flanagan lehigh county dist att george j joseph has released the results of his of ficial investigation of the prison suicide of randy bujcs a former university student finding no criminal culpability on the part of anyone connected with the case if it does not answer the questions we should persist said rev hubert l flesher university chaplain and chair man of the forum referring to joseph's investigation bujcs who was 20 used his shirt to hang himself from a light fixture m lehigh county prison after being incarcerated oct 6 1972 on several drug charges police reportedly said bujcs was the biggest pusher of lsd m the area bujcs was placed m solitary con finement oct 12 for being troublesome because he wouldn't have his hair cut on oct 21 bujcs attempted suicide by hanging after marks were discerned on his neck by visitors bujcs was tran sferred to allentown state hospital on oct 23 ; ; a sanity hearing was held nov 6 at which two state psychiatrists testified that ferdinand beer tenure panel picks 13 to interview chairmen by jeff bodenstab the tenure subcommittee of the forum committee on academic environment has chosen 13 students and faculty members to interview department chairmen on university tenure procedures the names of the interviewers who were chosen by frank hook professor of english and chairman of the subcommittee and paul maco 74 were made available at a meeting last thursday they will be paired randomly one student with one faculty member and will begin their in vestigation m the next two weeks the interviewers will be seeking factual information about procedures already m use they will not be inquiring about cases involving specific faculty members hook stated m a letter to department chairmen he also said that conversations would be taped for purposes of accuracy among the topics to be discussed m the interviews are procedures criteria extra-departmental participation guidance for untenured faculty and research activities commenting on the eventual aims of the committee maco said we need much greater student input into tenure decisions there should be some mechanism for student input on the departmental level students are the best people to evaluate a professor's teaching ability maco also suggested that a separate group possibly consisting of three people might be created to investigate tenure from a purely abstract level he noted that the committee had letters from numerous colleges across the country m response to a letter sent by the committee requesting information on tenure systems maco said power house conversion included in forum agenda the forum will hold its november meeting at 7:30 tonight m the uc osbourne room where it will consider a proposal to convert wilbur power house into a drama facility the proposal was the work of the administration committee which con cluded that the power house will solve the most important and immediate educational needs of drama at lehigh the resolution states should an af firmative decision on this conversion be made the project should be started without undue delay one source of funds could be phase i new century funds which had been allocated for drama facilities m grace hall studies now being undertaken to satisfy the need of adequate theater space for public production should be fully en couraged and the development of such space should continue to be a goal of the new century campaign it is estimated that for less than 300,000 the power house could be converted to a facility which would meet the educational needs of drama for the foreseeable future in particular a small workshop theater drama classroom space offices and shop and storage space would all be held under one roof one advantage of the conversion for drama is that the relatively small cost would allow the facility to be used very soon also on the agenda for tonight's forum meeting is a report from the law school committee of the board of trustees and a report from university president w deming lewis on tlie affirmative action program of the university the four standing forum committees will also report grade requirements slated for faculty review a proposal to alter the freshman grade experience at lehigh was approved unanimously wednesday by the educational policy committee ed pol joseph b mcfadden chairman of edpol said he intends to present the proposal to the university faculty m december the proposal which is the work of sheldon radin professor of physics received a three-meeting hearing by edpol the proposal effective m fall 1975 stated that for internal university pur poses a student's graduation average would be based on his last three year's performance rescuing him from a poor freshman year probation for a freshman would be reduced to a failure to achieve a 1.00 the freshman year would be discounted toward the minimum graduation average which would be in creased to a cumulative 1.90 beginning m the second semester of the junior year to avoid probation sophomores must achieve a cumulative 1.60 their first semester and a 1.70 during the second semester juniors must achieve a 1.80 during their first semester a 1.90 is required for the second semester of the junior year and the entire senior year mcfadden said it should be cautioned that the use of two separate averages is strictly for university use the regular four-year average will be placed on the student's transcripts and sent to graduate schools the proposal is designed to give a better indication of the student's academic record the proposal stated adding that at times freshmen have a hard time ad justing to college life and may suffer academically over the past two years edpol m an see 13 chosen page 8 see district page 7 see professors pace 4 see sac page 8
