the present brown and white laboratory in the basement of christmas-saucon hall will be turned into a class-room the journalism office on the third floor of christmas-saucon will be given to dr w leon godshall asso ciate professor of diplomatic his tory whose present office is in grace hall the old faculty dining room is to be partitioned into brown and white rooms and journalism de partment offices and rooms two dark rooms are to be constructed in the area formerly occupied by the old cafeteria soda fountain and part of the basement will be left for ping-pong and billiard tables the rest of the old cafe teria room will be left open and may be divided by office-railings the president declared construction of the lehigh pub lications and journalism center in the little-used basement of drown hall has been given the go ahead signal by pres clement c wil liams the center — containing rooms and offices for the depart ment of journalism and for the brown and white — will probably be completed by the end of august according to president williams faculty dining room to be made over cyanide devoted one of its meetings to the investigation of mass calisthenics but came to the continued on page 4 the willingness of students liv ing on campus and on delaware avenue to make the five-mile trip to saucon park conclusively proves their interest in the intramural program and also discredits the statement that students will be unwilling to walk 450 yards up south mountain to play softball the immediate need for a new playing field was further evi denced this spring when it became necessary for mr bartlett to sche dule intramural softball games at saucon municipal park in order to complete the regular intra mural program by the end of the school term the lower field and steel field remain as the only suitable play ing spaces the former is over crowded when varsity teams are practicing simultaneously with intramural contests and the latter is unsatisfactory as far as intra mural work is concerned due to transportation problems involved due to the present shortage of gasoline and tires and due to the fact that the university bus is not available to students it is al most impossible for the students to get to steel field gas shortage trouble fitness in many ways yet as the general program of athletic fitness has received a na tionwide impetus from most col leges which have increased their past facilities lehigh university lags behind — hampered by intra mural facilities and equipment which has long since been insuf ficient to satisfy the needs of the student body to complicate the problem further lehigh's present facilities are decreasing since the location of the new track on the upper field excludes the use of that field for intramural sports mr gordon has stated that that field is available only to the track team significant parts of the report follow at a time when national defense and the general war effort demand that the nation heed the important problem of physical fitness in order to prepare its manpower for the physical strains of total war american universities have in general met this urgency by increasing intramural facili ties making physical educa tion an active integral part of present day college life and further emphasizing physical cyanide considered eight cam pus or near-campus sites includ ing several areas suitable for ten nis courts and arrived at a de cision to propose that the univer sity construct a playing field in the area to the northwest of the present top o the mountain theatre and five asphalt base courts usable for winter ice-skat ing in locations back of the sigma nu fraternity a mid-campus spot a cyanide two-year investiga tion into the general problem of athletics at lehigh has resulted in the preparation of a report dealing with the need for additional intra mural playing fields the report edited by q john schwartz sum mer president of the society has been presented to pres clement c williams and to the board of trustees report to president stresses additions cyanide sees need for fields there is a total of 39 grad uate students in the second session 14 others are enrolled in the pre-session for grad uates said mr curtis there are 765 undergrad uates registered for the second eight weeks of the summer session according to figures recently released by registrar george b curtis of these 537 are registered for the full 16 weeks and 228 registered just for the second eight weeks 765 undergraduates register for 2nd term russian professor retells tale of his 45-day crossing for northern africa where professor kogetliantz and his wife spent 20 days and nights in the city of morocco where the heat was oppressive and the flies were terrible from morocco the crossing was made to shipping papers from portugal and the nazi gov ernment professor kogetliantz is of small stature and in his improvised office he is more than ready to make the acquaintance of stu dents who have mathematical problems although it is not definite as to just what math courses professor kogetliantz will teach beginning with the fall sem ester he expects to teach interme diate courses in calculus and al gebra with the united states badly in need of mathematicians for train ing with the armed forces and es pecially in the navy and artillery lehigh is fortunate in having pro fessor kogetliantz an expert in this field teaching the engineers this subject the government has noticed such a deficiency in basic mathe matics that attention to this shor tage of technical training was written in an
