brown and white vol 85 — no 39 866-0331 bethlehem pa friday march 22 1974 arts faculty rejects feaver plan to add language requirement the motion favoring the addition of a foreign language requirement to the proposed distribution requirements was voted down by the faculty of the college of arts and sciences on mar 5 the new distribution system which does not require a language was later brought closer to a final decision when the ed pol committee approved it the final decision on the requirement will be made by the university faculty douglas feaver professor of classics and sponsor of the motion to add a language requirement proposed that students take either one or two 5-credit language courses or three 3-credit courses depending on previous ex perience norman melchert associate professor of philosophy said that many students desiring bachelor of science degree are entering either the college of business and economics or the college of engineering to avoid the original language requirement john hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences said that the language dispute must be settled this year he also urged that the arts faculty show unity in its decision feaver s motion was defeated by a vote of 43 to 27 at a recent meeting of the ed pol committee the new distribution requirements passed by the college of arts and sciences faculty were discussed preliminary requirements give students experience with each of the college's three fields of study before a major is chosen the requirements should be fulfilled by the end of the fourth semester of college work upperclass requirements call for at least 20 hours in courses above the elementary level in areas other than the student's major some members of the ed pol committee expressed fears that a student could pass through four years of school without being exposed to math biology language physics or literature anthony james associate professor of english pointed out that academic advisors would not permit students to go through school without being exposed to various subjects the new distribution requirements if approved by the university faculty will go into effect in june of this year all students currently enrolled will have the option of completing their studies under either the old or new distribution plan the university faculty will vote on the issue on apr 8 b&w photo by 1915 in lake forest illinois he has worked as a newspaper reporter and a political columnist proxmire graduated from the hill school in pottstown pennsylvania in 1934 after graduation he enrolled in yale where he majored in english literature and earned a b.a in 1938 after yale prox mire went to harvard where he tutored while working on his master's degree in business administration he received his degree cum laude proxmire in 1941 entered the u.s army as a private and served in a coun terintelligence corps during the second world war in february of 1946 he was discharged as a first lieutenant entering into politics proxmire ran successfully for the state assembly from the madison wisconsin area he won over the six-term incumbent in the democratic party and also defeated the republican candidate by a two-to-one margin in elections he was a three-time losing candidate for the governorship of wisconsin losing twice to republican incumbent walter j kohler whom proxmire defeated in the senatorial election • in a special election in 1957 proxmire became the first democratic senator chosen by wisconsin voters in 25 years defeating kohler by more than 22,000 votes b&w photo by connery streakers were all over the campus on the thursday evening before vacation the streakers numbered in the hundreds and the spectators in the thousands 400 students exposed during campus streak-in by robert k feldman streaking hit lehigh in a series of revealing events which took place before vacation culminating in a parade-like affair on thursday night which featured several hundred streakers and an estimated 4500 spectators streaking the increasingly popular fad of taking one's clothes off and running around au nature has been sweeping college campuses during the last few weeks stephen freilich program director of the campus fm radio station wlvr taped an interview with a young man known as the mad streaker on his station's newsmakers program tuesday night and the publicity led the way to a nude football game about an hour later in the freshman quad eventually the two-team squad grew into a 75-man stampede between the freshman quad and mcclintic-marshall house as stunned students witnessed the first streak-in at lehigh freilich denies having been part of a conspiracy to have lehigh taken by sur prise by streakers after the interview with the mad streaker freilich told his listening audience that they were welcome to phone in and express their opinions concerning streaking several minutes later some 20 or 30 streakers expressed their naked opinions as they barged into the radio studio on wednesday counterfeit intramural notices which declared streaking an in tramural sport and announced a streaker's meeting to be held thursday night were sent out to all intramural managers later william quay dean of student life released a statement con cerning streaking noting that it was in violation of the disciplinary code to in decently expose oneself thursday night's rally was possibly the largest spontaneous gathering the university has ever had the allentown morning call estimated that there were up to 400 streakers running through the campus of 4500 spectators 1500 were city residents the newspaper estimated convertibles full of streakers toured the campus to the rousing cheers of the spectators and fellow streakers running alongside with the exception of one or two girls the streakers were all men during the streaker rally traffic was jammed throughout the campus and one student was injured in a fight one woman screamed to streaking winner named assistant to the provost dr nan van gieson has been named by president w deming lewis to fill the newly created-position of assistant to the provost she was selected as an american council on education fellow which made her eligible for the post we are pleased that dr van gieson has been selected in the national competition for one of the prestigious ace internships which enables her to join the provost staff at lehigh said provost albert zet tlemoyer her primary duties will include assisting with budget preparations gathering and analyzing data preparing staff reports and other duties to be assigned roger w hayns president of the american council on education made the announcement that van gieson had been chosen to be an ace fellow in the 1974-75 academic administration internship program the purpose of the program is to identify and train promising faculty and junior staff members for higher positions in academic administration previous selections for
