the establishment of a uni versity goals committee and student representation on ttm board of trustees lewis signed a statement this morning agreeing to cure's two proposals with minor revisions he agreed to ask the board of trustees for student membership on specific trustee committees speaking before a packard lab packed with over 700 students and faculty msm bers lewis agreed to the proposal to create a university goals committee but passed over the question of student membership on trustee committees lewis said i would not support the idea categorically it might be a fine idea for some of the committees but for some of the others it would not work he said lewis recommended that arcadia and members of cure sit down with the trustees to discuss their ideas he did not say when or how such a meetingcould or would take place lewis said he agreed with tke estab lishment of a university goals committee in general but be suggested a few minor changes cure recommended the estab lishment of the committee to lewis yesterday morning to pursue three basic goals 0 the committee would define a spectrum of ideal universitites consid ering a university's place in society and its responsibility to its students 2 the committee would analyze lehigh university as an educational institution and would compare it with the model of an ideal university developed in the first stage ■3 the committee would formulate and evaluate means which will enable lehigh to approach the model of an ideal uni versity developed in the first stage at the beginning of the meeting cure's don parsons 70 charged that the university has no educational policy lewis who was suffering from severe laryngitis called upon university vice president dr charles seldle to read lewis 1064 inaugural address in which he stated his educational philosophy and related it to the university he quoted asa packer who lewis said established the educational policy of the university this was an acquisition of knowledge and skill a broadening of vision and an enrichment of personal life to these points lewis added that the student should be concerned with knowledge as custodain and also taking an active part in the community and the nation following lewis comments he called upon hugh p mcfadden a member of the university's board of trustees for ids reactions to cure's proposals lewis termed mcfadden a reasonable member oa tus board mcfadden called student membership on the board " a totally unpractical sugges tion because of the university's charter but said during the question period that representation on certain of the board's committees might be feasible he said that the rumors he had heard that the arts school was being slighted were unfounded and noted that he was appalled at the demonstrators who protes ted at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the sinclair laboratory he said this may be an indication that there is not enough communication between students and the board of september renovations oo the basement of packer memorial chapel will be completed over the summer according to larry macko"'iafc 70 chairman of the arcadia coffee house committee tne committee hopes to look into coffee houses at other schools this semester in order to get some idess for the coffee house here applications for the com mittee are available at the activities desk mackowiak hopes to form the com mute soon in order to start work as early as possible macko-'iak sees no immediate problems with the coffee house the board of trustees gave the committee a free reign to go ahead the university is taking care at the renovations mackowiak plans to approach ths class cabinets t ask for contributions towards furnishings for the coffee house which he estimates will cost approximately 200 under the plan approved by the board oi trustees the students win pay for furnishings and for the upkeep of the coffee house the coffee house will be located in the basement of the chapel approximately under the altar it will be necessary to make another exit on the east side of the chapel and to install rest room facilities the coffee house w!u be approximately 30 feet by 40 feet and will seat 50-60 people exactly how it will operate has not been determined this will be the first job of ths committee we plan to look at coffee houses at other schools but we don't want to copy anybody only to get ideas and suggestions for our coffee bouse mackowiak hopes the coffee house will teach in on friday by john gustavsen u profs to be at moravian interested * students and faculty members from lehigh and moravian will have a chance to voice their opinions on the vietnam war and the draft at the teach-in to be held at the north campus of moravian college next friday the all-day affair will begin at 9 a.m with a short panel discussion on student responses to the draft scott williams instructor in the mathematics depart ment and herbert ford 68 will participate from the university vietnam what it means to america will be discussed beginning at 10:15 a.m joseph dowling chairman of the university history department and james macintosh professor of social relations will participate with moravian faculty members prof macintosh said the discussions will center on the effects of the vietnam war on important domestic issues four people will apeak at 1 p.m on the proa and cone of vietnam involve ment they are robert greenblatt of the national mobilisation committee to end the war in vietnam peter cohen an independent paaee candidate for congress and a representative of tha american friends of vietnam a lobby organisation which has constantly supported active american involvement la the affairs of south vietnam steven bryan of the department of government will than comment on the statements of tha previous speakers when asked to comment on ms parti cipntion bryan said that ha would take a moderate position he said ha expects the positions of greenblatt and tha american friends of vietnam represen tative to be extreme views ha will argue that a simple or extreme view is like a game of checkers — you win er you lose ha said that he thinks the extremists will just talk at each other as they are inately opposed they will have ao common ground to discuss a mutual agreement hs said bryen said a moderate view la like a game of ehasa allowing tha use of a complex strategy and not advocating an extreme position the advantage ha said , — la tha ability to jgaeesure the icosta of a strategy rather than accept them as in an extreme position at s p.m edward
