lehigh coed ' ucational a tabulation of the responses to date about 50 per cent of those sent out shows 76.6 per cent favoring coeducation 20.4 per cent opposing and three par cent undecided the are almost certain to grind in january with the inauguration of a new president he pointed out that activists should avoid direct confrontation with the repressors since the current wave of activism had crystallized repression in a merica he asked the people in attendance to kssp their idealism alive until they got into the seats of power barry wlllner editor of the lafayette spoke against the external invaders that made universities the slaves of money and self-righteousness and " models of the inequities of the outside world • john gibbons professor of geology and advisor to lafayette's students for demo cratic reform announced that the lafayette curriculum committee had voted tuesday to abolish compulsory rotc and would most likely also recom mend to the board of trustees to abolish academic credit the vote against com pulsory rotc was 85-44 gibbons also stated that the " stagnation and sellout of universities and their " vocationallsm were symptom of the crisis which has the potential to destroy democracy marty tucker 69 also of the free press declared that my optimism is not the politics of joy it is the politics of reality he said that the " military mind perpetrates the pro-rotc position activist walkout mars talk by gop candidate by lou lightfoot the appearance of richard s schweiker republican candidate for u nited states senator before an audience of 150 in packer lab auditorium thurs day evening was marred by a protest walkout of about 40 student activists forwarned of the expected walkout schweiker began his address by thanking those in attendance and pardoning the people whose busy schedule prompted them to leave early he went on to attack the ills of ths present american political system he pointed to crime in the streets the vietnam war and spiraling inflation as a few of the symptoms of this present sickness there is something wrong with the system when so many of the public particularly the young have lost faith in our political processes he blames the legislative process itself for not being adjusted to society we who are politically responsible have not met the change we are the last to examine the system we must reform congress begin ning with the filibuster and seniority rights before we can attack the system schweiker went on to advocate a lower voting age the elimination of the electoral college and draft reform as areas of needed action within the system when discussing his ideas on draft reform which include the resignation of general hershey s one-year common manpower pool and eventual replacement of the
