at a house meeting sunday night the brothers of tau delta phi fraternity un animously voted to withdraw their mem bership from the interfreternity council ipc in an informal statement given to the brown and white tau delt outlined four principles to which the house aspires,but which are stifled by the fraternity system at lehigh thus forcing the fraternity to withdraw from ifc the group represent ing the system the principles pointed to by tau delt were a living group situation devoid of prejudice and true to the principles of quality a progress oriented pledge program instituted fairly and with respect to the individual character develop ment as an existential exercise allowing each individual to grow as he may which he may unimpeded by any outside pressure to conform and fourth the primary consideration of the fraternity to be in tellectual whether this ideal be gained through interpersonal relationships or formal academia according to tau delt president rick b w receive honorary doctorates dttfrii founder s day ceremonies degrees awarded to 275 during 90th founder's day by rick whiffen university president w : deming lewis conferred degrees on 275 students sunday in grace hall at the university's 90th annual founder's day tu total number of degrees awarded by the university during 1968 is now 1220 honorary degrees were conferred on stewart s cort president of bethlehem steel dr thomas e robinson lehigh alumnus and retired president of glass boro state college and ralph l wilson lehigh alumnus and trustee who recently retired as director of metallurgy for timken roller bearings co wilson received a doctor of humane letters degree cort and robinson received a doctorate of law degree wilson is known for his large couection of contemporary art which was started at the university in 1951 cort who has been with bethlehem steel for almost thirty years delivered the commencement address cart said that our habits of thought are under attack and that todays changes are most noteable for their far reaching effects he said that it was unfortunate that the voices that are heard most often are those that promote ill wiu if au informa tion that man received came from the television and radio then even the most prudent man would head for the hills yet cort admitted that even the most stable societies had their strong dissenters he then turned to the revolutions which have occured in this country he said that the american revolution was a conserva tive and that it preserved political and economic rights the civil war also fought to preserve and protect institutions he said in contrasting our own revolutions with those of the french and russians cort stated that these foreign revolutions tried to wipe out the existing political and economic establishment rather than merely change it cort said that the voices of today call for the dismantling of our system such as happened in the french and russian revolutions but these dissenters offer no new system or alternative of their own they would make our society worse he said " the backbone of our society is private enterprise said cort as he went onto quote new york's mayor john lindsay as saying private enterprise is the strongest weapon yet devised . it moves and changes with the times and it is strong enough to absorb the worse stresses and strains of our system cort stated strongly though that if the government is inflexible to change private enterprise must lead the way to effect this change imaginative young minds are needed cort ended by saying our time is the third american revolution which will bring about a better society by combining the best of the old and the new draft protest to be held tonight 150 attend last night's demonstration by goerge j bancroft a draft protest will he held tonight at 7:45 p.m in support of neal neamand 64 who is under federal indictment for draft evasion and arlon wong who is appealing for a conscientious objector status the demonstration is scheduled to coincide with wong's hearing which was originally planned for last night and was postponed until 7 p.m tonight however those who were present last night held a spontaneous demonstration neamand and wong will each read a statement tonight in front of the bethlehem selective service headquarters at 532 main street explaining why they are willing to face imprisonment rather than serve in the military their position la that the vietnam war is immoral illegal and unconstitu tional they are appealing for conscien tious objector co status which they claim board 114 in bethlehem has consistently refused to recognize a statement by neamand claims that the selective service law is unconstitu tional depriving men of their liberty without due process of law and subjecting men to an arbitrary system without right of counsel or appeal at yesterday's demonstration neamand said he is not associated with any religion that entitles him to a c o status hut that the draft hoard dees have the power to grant such a status in spite of this neamand said that he does not expect the demonstration to bring any change in his own status he said he hopes it will make men aware of one of their options namely that they do not have to serve in the military neamand has taken his appeals as far as he can through the selective service system and will have a final hearing on his draft status within several weeks tonight's demonstration and last night's were organized primarily to support wong in his appeal before the board tonight at last night's protest bob thompson a teacher at a local high school pleaded with the demonstrators to return tuesday to support wong and to be there by 7 p.m hairy growth ugly man winner smiley house captured first place in the 1968 ugly man on campus contest and set what is believed to be a new record for the most money ever collected by one living group in the history of the contest smlley's entrant the hairy growth collected 325.73 the annual ugly man contest is spon sored by the campus service fraternity alpha phi omega apo proceeds are donated to the campus chest with the 10 living groups collecting the most money receiving first choice of seats for the houseparty weekend football game it was reported by dave gooch 69 apo president that although the 1130.83 total collected by all the contestants for ugly man did not set a record it waa a very respectable sum runner-up waa flash beaver of lambda chi alpha with 259.51 while emery house's yen-dor-tor placed third with 103.99 fourth place was captured by west of chi psi who collected 83.68 the highest placing freshman section was drinker 4 with 62.33 collected by their entry bartman good for fifth place followed by drinker 3-b olaf taremare who raised 51.46 to place sixth the contest's closest competition was between hayssen of richards 3-a and wack-me-wong of richard's 2-a who gathered 4 mo and 38.93 respectively hayssen placed seventh and wack-me wong eighth sigma phi epslloh's vomit vulture finished ninth with 33.45 while happy aldo borin of the gryphon society gather ed 28.60 to fill out the top ten sao students page 6 see tau delt page
