mt this country dr charles v hamilton professor of political science at rocssvslt university said this last night at the last lecture in the critical issues in negro history lecture series he attempted to destroy ihe myths about black power and explained it as being an alternate and viable way to civilization in america and the world he described black power in three aspects concepts and theories of black power — alienation relevant intermediary groups and political modernization needed explanation to make clear the foundations of black power social violence as associated with black power was explained as existing in two types expressive and instrumental expressive violence is the rioting we have had since july 1964 it is the kind that should not cause worry about the strength of our nation because it is visible dissent thereby contributing to its strength instrumental violence is the type that knocks out a communication system it deals with selective retaliation against whites it builds a base in the black community and being underground activity it is hard to stop he listed the seven categories of black power that cannot be reconciled with each other the seven aspect black pride hatred of whites race separatism pressure goe^_pejlmea t **■«*>* r»-r ism and neighborhood control were not extensively explained by hamilton instead he detailed the three theories of black power hamilton classified alienation as being between races of people and institutions of society he said that society's institu tions must be relevant to the people they affect the legitimacy of an institution is deter mined by its useful service to a community an institution can be legal and illegitimate if it does not serve its community hamilton used the example of the 29th ward of chicago where 98.2 per cent of the population is black and the ward democratic party committeeman is wnite he also lives five miles from the center of ms responsibility hamilton asked how it is possible for such a political institution to be legitimate he then expounded on the theory of relevant intermediary groups closely related to ms alienation theory institu tlons alienated to their communities such as political parties cannot serve as inter mediaries between the white and black communities chicago's 29th ward schools thai ignore the black view of slavery in history courses aad olice who persecute rather than protect citi aen are all examples or irr*j*v*nt intermediary groups hamilton referred to federalist papers by james madison to support ms belief that social groupings must operate within a consentual society the task of one group must be consented to by the group immediately affected by that task other wise irrelevance will prevail and alienation will flourish . hamilton then established the theory of political modernization in america as related to black power this country is charles hamilton elected to arcadia eight fraternity men three freshmen and one town student were elected to arcadia xxm in the at-large elections held last week the at-large representatives descen ding order of number of votes received are bill kuhn 70 jon shehab 71 james kasser 71 albert eisley 70 bichard plant 72 kurt leaker 71 eric crease 71 jerry potack 7s john schroedel 70 hal johnson 71 robert rege 71,ar>d greg landvater 72 bill taylor 70 was elected with tea third largest vote total but he resigned because he was elected president of ms fraternity during tha election period ha feels that this position together with ma academic responsibilities forced mm to decline the arcadia position he la a member of theta cm statement by taylor on pace s the election of eight fraternity men makes this election a direct contrast to the executive election ho fraternity men were elected to executive positions according to the brief statements the candidates submitted to the brown and wmte nine of the new representatives want arcadia raprascatsttcn teeti hgfaa ad six want selectivity or discrimination issue examined eight expressed concern for academic betterment and four stated that they wanted coeducation studied three juniors six sophomores and three freshman will serve on the new arcadia as at-large representatives the five execu tive officers are at juniors there will also be a representative from rhc ipc and town council the new arcadia will take office houses during the vacation were listed additional precautions are being taken because of the increasing vandausm and theft at fraternity houses during vacations additional police patrols are scheduled for nights during the christmas holidays fraternities must notify the office of ths dean of student life in advance of the vaca tion as to whether their house will be closed over the vacation police will stop and question any per sons who appear suspicious or whose busi ness insayre park is in doubt all students are asked to cooperate and have their stu dent identification cards with them gremlin
