lehigh university brown and white mm iii i ii ii.iimi'.muujliaujigj ' iti.:»ii)i^ini»iiiiiiiiui bethlehem pa : friday may 14 lf*9 v fy * **?. * 5 _ zettlemoyer gives position the following is the official memorandum on the re sults of the sit-in held may 7 by students of the socio relations department i the faculty and administration are aware of the problems arising from the recent greatly increased enrollments in the department at social relations the actions we have taken to date with respect to these problems have been closely related to the current development of long-range plans for the entire university these plans call for an undergraduate enrollment maintained approximately at 8,800 with a doubling of full-time graduate students specifically the tentative plans call for a doubling of graduate enrollment in the col lege of arte and science with corresponding increases in faculty staff and facilities a comparable development at the college of business and economics is intended to insure parity among the three colleges including the college of engineering thereby developing a strong well-rounded university ~ although specific plans have yet to be completed for individual departments and although realization of such pans is dependent upon development of presently unavailable sources of funding in the humanities and social sciences certain trends are evident and certain commitments have already been made apparently these actions have not been fully communicated for example the urban studies program undergraduate and the center for business economics and urban studies graduate have been chosen as salients four new slots have been authorized in the last year three i of these in social relations history and government have been filled a fourth slot in fine arts for a specialist in urban design and planning is still unfilled further by far the greatest number of new positions authorised for the coming year in addition te the fear slots already mentioned were granted in the humanities and social sciences turning now specifically to the depart ment of social relations at least three and possibly four new faculty members will join the department in september dr girard krebs will join the staff for one year as assistant professor of social relations dr leo van rosy associate professor will fill the urban sociologist position in connection v itn the salient described earlier dr van hoey will teach an anthropology course in addition to his urban studies courses an anthro pologist will be hired to replace mr thomas myers who is resigning in addition a fourth slot has been authorised although the present major candidate for the position may not come until the following year on the specific issues currently be fore us we must clarify several points 1 although we question the occurrence of the sit-in itself since these grievances had not been brought before the provost before we recognise that the students behaved in an orderly and gentlemanly fashion during the sit-in we do however regret the use of the word demand since it soiirf»fl»s and peisrizss polsts of view in opposing manners 2 asa private institution with limited funds we cannot possibly fulfill all the smoker alternative created by arcadia by bill george arcadia passed a motion wednesday which grants the freshman lite committee the right to help sponsor an alternate event on the night of the freshman orientation smoker tw eaf win be edacaiiosa and most be approved by the presided rf arcadia in other action the proposal for an administrative council was finally passed and it was also moved that arcadia aprmsor a state of the university address by the president of the university to its students each semester " richard plant the student who sponsored the smoker motion said that the freshman smoker was a waste of time that it did nothing to help the intellectual atmosphere at the university and it was taking «•> « m »*•♦ c o»id be mere veusbly used by a guest speaker or some other educational activity those in opposition to the motion were worried that the alumni would be ulmedod by arcadia's competing with them the alumni now sponsor the smoker it was also stressed by mike berney r.h.c vice president that the smoker built up spirit and united the freshman class the smoker motion was passed under the assumption that the event that would be held at the same time as the smoker would be educational it was stressed thai having two events at the same time wwild make freshmen realize that orientation week isn't a strict defined period the proposal for student government changes was finally passed end thus the administrative council of 16 students that groups 18 arcadia committees together has now been put into effect the purpose of the administrative council is to enable vested interest groups the residence balis interfraternlty and town councils to work together in ■areas of common need such as athletics concerts and lectures the state of the university address urged by arcadia is designed so students can be made more aware of what is going on in the administration and in the university norm monhalt vice president of arcadia suggested that other members of the university administration alee give speeches regularly so that all university actions are better communicated to the students b aw photo by butt footprints on the sands of time the a teem passes into infamy see special center spread for details sen hobbs sees no heed for campus firearm lews by olev taremae pennsylvania state sen frederick h hobbs came out strongly against attempted legislative regulation of colleges in an interview broadcast tuesday over wlvr sen bobbes took congress to task for passing a law making it illegal to possess firearms on campus unless specifically permitted by the administration answer ing questions by stephen bryen instructor in government charles l tipton associate professor of history john fields of the lehigh radio network and alan soschin editor emiritus of the brown and white the senator emphasised that colleges cannot be controlled by legisla tors he noted that no special laws are needed for campus problems since every thing already is covered by other laws he stated that all past efforts to regulate students have met in failure because they are unenforceable concerning black college students hobbes stated that everyone is entitled to the same benefits unfortunately he noted freedoms have been limited to a very few he favored increased black admis sions and special programs to help non-whites in earning a degree he felt that the state should pay for such pro grams but feared that the legislature probably would not pass such measures right now community colleges he thought could play abig role in the higher education of negroes using the center city phila delphia community college as an example he showed how these schools could prepare ghetto youth for four year colleges hobbes believes that there is no need for rotc to have academic credit though he felt that the administration should decide that question according to him students should be represented on the board of trustees but not as voting members unless the board failed to make use of their advisory role the young senator when questioned about next year's gubernatorial race replied thai neither the republicans or the democrats were in particularly good shape he stated that people have lost confidence in schaeffer for that reason he suggested that the next republican candidate for governor be a liberal with labor support who is not closely associa ted with gov schaeffer hobbes felt pessimistic about the conservative back lash thai has developed in the state senate thus thwarting ms efforts hobbes favored the lowering of the voting age and predicted that this will occur within the next six years he stated that anything tees than full adult privileges for today's youth would belle this society s hypocrisy ifc committee finds fsa fair changes asked by bill chastain the inter fraternity council's committee to evaluate the fraternity service asso ciation fsa has found after a two month study that fsa is performing a useful service and should continue to serve fraternities possibly with some changes bill bahn 49 one of the three alumni members of the committee reported to ifc at tuesday's meeting that the study has been completed end that copies of the findings will soon be distributed to all university fraternities other conclusions of the committee ares savings do result from participation in fsa the majority of participating fra ternities are satisfied with fsa and feel that it should continue to function the majority of participating fra ternities are is sgreesieiii with the money spent in operating fsa — fraternities must manage food service more closely the committee's suggested changes for streamlining fsa included • the establishment of a committee to receive complaints about service quality and prices buying meet which accounts for approximately 40 per cent of fraternity food costs from two large and reputable dealers in the hope that the resulting competition between the two would improve service and quality while keeping prices down see zettlemoyer pate 8 see ipc p»g g
