development committee that the land from the northern-most developed part of the broadhead parking lot north ward to radio station wgap be developed into a student parking area the addition of the new area would increase the number of student parkins spaces available on campus by 200 the action was announced by university treasurer elmer glick chairman of the committee glick said the committee has also recommended that cars not bearing university registration stickets be excluded from the lot he said the campus police have been directed to issue warnings to vehicles which use the lot but art not registered with the university he noted that after the second warning has been issued to a vehicle , the matter will be turned over to the bethlehem city police the recommendations of the committee must be approved by the university board of trustees before development of the area can begin glick estimated that the facility could be completed by next september the development of the site will require the removal of several homes and families from the land under the broadhead estate any development of the land must be approved by the university board of trustees law requires that residents of homes to be vacated be given at least 90-day notice before the land can be cleared glick noted we don't want to be too precipitous in pushing people out assistant dean of students arthur mann said that his office had issued student parking stickers to 32 cars belonging to teachers in broughal junior high school the city is currently building a parking lot for the teachers on the east side of the school the university has allowed the teachers to park in the broadhead lot until the junior high school lot is com pleted some time in june mann noted that a recent survey in dicated that the broadhead lot was being used regularly by 4th street merchants secretaries and other people not connect ed with the university glick noted that due to the critical student parking situation which has de veloped on campus the university has decided it is more expedient to put the needs of the university and the students ahead of community interests in this par ticular instance r&w photo bv sims construction of the university's new si million powerhouse will begin monday on the site next to the present powerhouse at the southwest corner of taylor street and packet avon ue a parkins lot with a capacity for 45 cars presently occupies the lit parking has boon prohibited according to signs postod in the lot from " 7 a.m monday until completion of powerhouse an additional 15 to 20 spaces about 40 per cent of capacity have boon blocked off with saw horses in the lot directly across packer avenue from the powerhouse site this area will be used to park construction company trailers white the new powerhouse it being built one trailer has already been parked in the lot arcadia discusses rotc by marty marasco a finance and calendar committee motion to permit the military department to sponsor the military ball sparked a lengthy discussion on the military in gen eral and the place of the rotc program on campus in particular at the arcadia meeting wednesday night steve globus 69 triggered the discus sion by reading a prepared statement at tacking the recent change in deferment policy the military establishment itself and its right to exist on campus the motion on the military ball was eventually passed by a vote of 11-2 with three abstentions the arcadians decid ed that to prevent the ball would not be an appropriate means of expressing dis approval with the rotc program or the war in vietnam 1 however before the meet ing was over ' casey cogut 69 said it might be in the best interest of arcadia to leave its apo litical position on world affairs and take a stand on current problems in connec tion with the war 1 ' a number of arcadians agreed with the cogut suggestion it was alio suggested that an ad hoc committee be set up to examine the revelance of the rotc pro gram to the university speaking on the issue globus said i hope we will recommend that rotc's accredlatlon should be taken away rotc should exist but not with rewards in the form of credit arcadia also voted to table a motion to permit the ifc to sign roy wllklns for a lecture on april 23 with ticket prices set at 50 cents the move to table was made after cogut questioned the decision to permit the ipc to charge ad mission to students tor the event al borln 68 president of arcadia announced that be had met with president w demlnf lewis tuesday and was told by the president that he will be placed on the ad hoc committee on parking bortn said that lewis also set up a meeting for tuesday with members of the board of trustees and several members of the arcadia committee on the coffee house the trustees committee will dis cuss the coffeehouse with the students and decide on the feasibility of using tho basement of the packer chapel for it borin said that lewis has promised some temporary solution if the trustees reject the use of the chapel basement fcc motion spurs debate values of marijuana discussed at student faculty forum m the moral social and legal aspects of marijuana were the major topics of discussion at tuesday's student-faculty arcadia forum prof thomas m haynes department of philosophy stated that cognition character and community should be considered by those who take marijuana he said that a drug user should decide what kind of knowledge he hopes to gain from the experience cognition what will happen to him as a person if he does take the drug character and how he can relate to society as a drug user community rev francis j sullivan spoke on the moral questions involved in the use of the marijuana he said the traditional view that anything interfering consciousness is immoral still exists if one were to fol low this belief the drug and us use could be considered anti-social anti-religious and anti-human said sullivan he added that most people who take the drug don't consider the moral standpoint involved - they just use marljuara prof richard c lewis jaw dept brought to light some concrete facts concerning marijuana us said that both state and federal laws are very strict regarding the drug he stated that the respective laws differ but that there are still flats and jail sentences on both levels for the use possession and selling or giving
