the social contact bar be tween upparclaasmon and freshmen during the first semester was proposed at a ateot tag of the interfraternity council tuesday night the committee sponsoring the proposal hopee to have it voted upon at its nest meeting if the proposal is passed it moot be approved by the student lite committee to take effect next year as it now stands the student life committee is in favor of the proposal the proposal was forwarded by sandy mcconnel 69 chairman of the special committee studying a new rushing method the system of rushing proposed was modeled after that of cornell and union college where it has been in effect some time the system would forbid any social con test liotasßu uppercussmen and freshmen from prtietewwi to oct 21 bet would break away from the old setup by allowing fag ramnftleg tot too reel oi the eemee ter there will still be no contacting by fra ternity men in the freshmen residence halls until the second semester however and pre-blds amy not be extended until this time insuring deferred ptsdgtaw the proposal would allow fraternities to entertain freshmen at parties and other social events after oct 31 tats would al low the freshmen and fraternity men to get a better idea of each other and would give freshmen more time to make the correct decision concerning pledging noted mcconnel this moans that a freshman may attend any open party after oct 21 and a house may extend invitations for its closed parties to freshmen it wishes to attend a prebid which is defined by ipc as the formal commitment on the part of a fraternity to a freshman informing him that a formal bid from mat fraternity will be extended to him will not be recog nised by the council unleee tt 1 made on or after the first dag of classes in the spring semester jan 29 1960 this means that a prebid extended by a house in the first semester would not have to be honored by the fraternity at the time of formal bide if tt was decided j ha a mis take was made on the prospective pledge open houses would be held as in the present system but on sundays from sept 15 to oct 20 the open rushing makes the open houses less important and greatly supplents them for according to the com mittee they were inadequate for making realistic personal impressions the need for contacting in the freshman residence halls would be greatly lessen ed since the open rush of the first sem ester would give both parties an idea of whom they were interested n as a result of the diminished need for contacting if the proposal took effect the new rush regulations would include short er contacting hours the new hours would be from 4-10 on tues jan 28 wed jan 29 and friday jan 31 and 8-10 on sun feb 2 tuesday feb 4 wed nesday feb 6 and thursday fab 7 the first day of houses early in the fall semester followed by open rushing after oct 21 rush changes agreeable by norm greenough to ifc rhc and deans comments on toe new later fraternity council rushing proposal have for the meet pert been very favorable student leaders and university officials have agreed that the program has some definite merit rob gould president of the ifc backed the proposal folly he said that it might be hard for some of the fraternities to adjust to the program but after an initial adjustment period the new methods would be worthwhile for all involved jim winchester president of the residence halls council said that it would be in the best interest of the university to try such a plan although ido not agree with the contacting sen dule he said the new system would put a lot of pressure on the fraternities but it would give the freshmen a much better look at fraternity life dean quay assistant dean of student life was also folly be hind the proposal 1 his association with edward pollock vice president of monmouth college and former dean of student life of union college for eight years had acquainted him with the system he said that pollock pointed out that better decisions were made by both freshmec and fraternities with the deferred pledg ing and that the former strict rules were hard to enforce clarence campbell dean of the residence halls said that he favored a " longer rushing period of lower intensity . the general consensus of the ifc representatives was that the new proposal was a definite improvement over the old sys tem . many stated that the system would give all of the fraternities a better chance to look at a wider selection of freshman they would not have to cot down their rushing lists too quickly be cause of the lack of time for fraternity-freshman association the main concern seemed to be the possibility of added ex penses to the fraternities cost for extra meals and higher social costs were the main causes of concern it was agreed that these expenses might be slightly larger during the first year of the program because of the intense competition but most thought that these would decline in the following years most fraternity men did agree that this program with its less restrictive regulations might be the answer to the present rushing problems u.c snackbar adds jukebox the university center snack bar now has a new juke box the student-faculty u c advisory committee voted feb 15 also to install two pin ban machines in the game room in the basement of the u.c according to tom deeks,'6s,a member of the committee the facilities will be installed by monday the contracts however have not yet been released the suggestion was originally brought before the student committee by steve levy 69 president of coed they ap proved the idee and it wo then brought before the combined committee the committee is presently considering the possibility of holding small mixers in the snack bar sometime in the future
