brown and white vol 79 - no 35 bethlehem pa - friday march 8 1968 866-0331 rushing proposal tabled by ifc by norm gre enough the interfratermty council failed to vote on the proposed revised rushing regulations at its meeting tuesday night further discussion was tabled until the rushing seminar which takes place on march 14 sandy mcconnel 60 proposed the motion which would allow for greater freshmen-fraternity association during the fall semester he urged the council to adopt the proposal so that work could be started to set up the system for the fall of 1968 as a result of the discussion the fra ternities seemed to move farther apart in their views of f he new regulations rick rainin 69 was very much against moving too fast on the proposal he read a letter from beta theta pi at union college which stated that their system which is similar to the proposed one was just as poor if not more so as our present system of rushing joe reynolds 6h favored the new regulations stating that it is more natural and provides for a continuous flowing between freshman and fraternity man it would be harder for both to put up a front tor a full semester casey cogut 69 also favored the new program and felt that the fraternities should be looking out more for the best interests of all concerned sat jest for themselves the rushing seminar on march 14 will bring together presidents and rushing chairmen from the 81 fraternities to discuss further the new proposal if there t « ft uflnlu trmimnt the proposal could be voted upon at that time wtmam quay assistant dean of student life gave two mala reasons for the interfraternity council's failure to pro the now contacting refulattona first of all 10 houses were not visited by an ipc represent at ive who was supposed to talk to the entire brotherhood about the proposal this tended to create the fooling that the proposal was a bit premature and that its adoption was moving too fast quay also believed that many houses thought the proposal too radical a change ho said that these houses should try to come up with some amendments which could vary easily bo incorporated into the original proposal at the upcoming rushing seminar other new business of the tuesday meeting included the nominations for ipc officers for the coming year voting will take place at the next regularly scheduled meeting the following people were nominated president donald karn 69 john do vlnentls 68 james huston 69 barry schlmf 69 richard lettlerl 69 and kenneth hull 69 vice president john werriiig ? 65 sieve edwards s8 jamas jordan 69 scott luley 69 and james hermlston 69 secretary tony mitchell 70 robert hand 69 and philip tredway 70 treasurer jeffrey tarnoff 69 and rod hanlon 69 rick rainin 69 discusses contacting with ifc mock primary planned by marty marasco time life selects lehigh lehigh will participate in " choice 68 a nation wide collegiate presidential primary according to an announcement made by casey cogut 69 at the arcadia meeting wednesday night cogut who is chairman of the arcadia lecture committee said the primary sponsored by time life inc will give the students an opportunity to express their preference for president without re gard to political affiliation the primary to be held april 24th will include a long list of presidential possibilities and will give the student the opportunity to express his first second and third choices for president the ballot win also include three referendum questions two on vietnam and one on the problem of the cities cogut said the lecture committee has appointed harry sobel 71 to head the project at lehigh al borln 69 arcadia president said the ad hoc committee on parking had met friday and took a walking tour of the campus to consider possible solutions to the parking situation borln concluded that before things get better they will get worse and there is little hope far an early solution to the problem borln also announced that a student-faculty com mittee on the theatre has been established and that bob weintraub 69 and alminsnoff 69 would serve as arcadia representatives arcadia voted to accept the revised by-laws on standing committees presented by cogut two weeks ago the revisions attempt to bring the by-laws into corrolation with present arcadia practices and es tablished several ad hoc committees as standing committees the motion was passed 15-1 with no discussion a motion presented last week by guy fisher 69 chairman of the finance and calendar committee to permit ifc to sign roy wiiklns for a lecture on april 23 was passed ticket prices of 50 for i.d card holders and 1 for all others were also ap proved — in other business arcadia voted to backstop the interfaith council up to 50 for any losses they might incur on the coffeehouses to be presented in the asa packer room of the university center to night and tomorrow night cogut also announced that one is still open on the board of publications arcadia airs choice 68 wednesday night lafayette views urban problems urban problems will be the topic of lafayette college's first all college convocation march 13 entitled the city 1968 chaos or order classes will be suspended so that both faculty and students can participate in the day long event consisting of several lectures and discussions there will be speeches by james farmer dr phillip hauser richard dllworth and nathan wright jr the rest of the program will consist of discussions both in living groups and in the faculty and freshmen dining halls the public is invited to all phases of the convocation dr hauser chairman of the faculty committee at the center for urban studies and a professor of sociology at the university of chicago will speak at the first session at 10 a.m in alumni memorial gymnasium farmer a professor of social welfare at llncolr university and the founder of the congress of racial equality core will speak at the same session dllworth was mayor of philadelphia from 1955 to 1962 and now serves as president of that city's board of education he will speak on the topic solving urban problems at 2 p.m in the gymnasium wright executive director of the department of urban work of the episcopal diocese of newark will speak on the topic urban unrest and black power immediately preceding dllworth students and factaty arc preparing themselves for the program hy reading three designated books on the issue also they will be able to see four films on urban problems which will be shown in pardee hall auditorium for three days prior to the convocation the films entitled the city ae man's home the city and its future the run from race and no time for ugliness will be shown march 10 11 and 12 dr charles b cole jr provost dean and chairman of the convo cation committee said we believe that the college community will find this day informative and meaningful we hope that the students will find rewarding the opportunity to discuss this urgent problem with their fellow students faculty members and experts a similar program was held yesterday when easton city officials and civic leaders cams to lafayette to discuss lafayette's respon sibilities to easton and how the college is meeting them
