first house party weekend was held last weekend during which 25 parties were held by fraternities sororities and other living groups friday and saturday nights according to dean of students john smeaton parties were to follow social policy revisions as stated at the forum xvii meeting on dec 4 houses were required to allow only personally invited guests to functions during three specified weekends per semester smeaton also said he hopes such weekends will discourage non-lehigh party-goers from frequenting the campus and make smaller more moderate parties possible according to smeaton the idea is to provide a time when the pressure is off fraternities to be open nouses for the whole campus judging from the police and ac cident reports the plan was very successful smeaton said there were no significant problems student reactions to the changes were varied fred stefany pi lambda phi fraternity social chairman said the party they held with gamma phi beta sorority was not great to be honest there just wasn't a huge crowd steffany said the biggest problem was that when people started leaving since no one could come in later because of the invitation-only policy kappa alpha society social chair man robert basler said their party was calmer than usual but people en joyed it as much as any other weekend alpha tau omega president chris clayton said it was all right — it was the first theme party we've had in a while he added that only allowing invited guests limits the options of what you can d0 1 didn't enjoy it i'd rather have open parties all the time due to the smaller party size and the reduced cost of serving fewer guests four out of the five houses contacted said they served grain alcohol punch or mixed drinks smeaton said this trend may lead to future considerations of how these parties should be handled if that parties serving more hard alcoholic beverages is representitive it could be a real problem he said another purpose of the weekends is to provide an opportunity for students to explore other social options smeaton said he cited friday's energizer rock n roll challenge and regular twilight shows as examples smeaton said house party weekends should not be viewed as limiting social opportunities in any way juniors bruce alperin left bob jackson and christine peterson enjoy junior day brunch with lehigh trustee milton grannatt 39 saturday in rathbone hall piercing pagoda founders donate 1 m for chair in ir bernard and bertha cohen long time civic leaders in the lehigh valley and founders of the piercing pagoda jewelry chain have established en dowed faculty chairs for 1 million each at their respective alma maters lehigh and moravian college university president peter likins and rodger martin president of moravian jointly announced that the chairs have been organized for the study of english and literature at moravian and international relations at lehigh presently living in boca raton fla the cohens explained that they are interested in providing expanded substantive support for an en vironment of teaching and com munication in the community they added that they like to come to bethlehem at least two months a year the moravian professorship in english and literature will support a faculty member of international renown in the field the lehigh professorship in in ternational relations will be dedicated to teaching and research contributing to a continuous critical examination of those social cultural economic and political processes in the global community which create the conditions of lasting peace previous contributions by the cohens support the cohen lecture series in international relations at lehigh and the cohen arts and lecture series at moravian in their joint announcement the presidents said the contributions of mr and mrs cohen represent a dedicated commitment to serving higher education and the faculty and students of both our institutions and the communities of the lehigh valley they added we are most gratified by their ongoing interest and support and are certain that members of the general public who benefit in par ticular from the major free lecture programs which they have established share in this appreciation cohen graduated from lehigh in 1936 with a degree in biology bertha cohen studied both science and english at moravian and graduated in 1937 during his many years as a bethlehem resident cohen served as chairman of the bethlehem planning commission for nine years and as general chairman of the united way drive a chamber of commerce member he was active in leadership roles in various fund-raising and community activities bertha cohen is a trustee of moravian and has served on the board attacker remains at large as no new cases reported by glenn dolan brown and while news writer no further incidents involving a masked assailant have been reported in the bethlehem area since the dec 7 assault of a lehigh student outside of chandler-ullmahn hall campus police chief eugene dax and bethlehem police detective phillip richardson said an assailant described by his victims as a white male in his early 20s approximately 6 feet tall and of medium build has been linked to a total of 14 recent incidents in the bethlehem area ranging from sightings to indecent exposure to an at tempted rape the officers said in each case throughout november and december the assailant was clad in a dark ski mask sweat shirt and jeans richardson said the victims were attractive-looking white college educated professional-type women in their late teens to early 305 he added all the victims were traveling alone right near their homes at the time of the attacks they thought saw photo by brenda lamarca freshman joe sieczkowski takes on
