engineering research center for advanced technology for large structural systems atlss a research facility in building h of the mountaintop campus according to john bower deputy director of the atlss program this multi-million dollar facility will conduct three-dimensional stress tests on structures such as skyscrapers bridges and offshore oil rigs prestigious institutions across the nation competed to be the center's site with the support of industry and the north east tier ben franklin ad vanced technology center lehigh was chosen by the national science foundation nsf march 26 1986 a year ago yesterday lehigh's center is one of 11 similar nsf-sponsored engineering research facilities established since 1985 we believe this facility will put lehigh on the map even more so than it is now civil engineering professor john fisher atlss program director said the existing building will be rebuilt to accomodate a multidirectional test bed and loading facility to allow ex perimentation on actual structures as the only such facility in the united states fisher said it will be a national research center which will affect the entire american construction industry the bottom line is to improve the competitive position of the american construction industry in both the national and international markets fisher said the u.s construction industry faces an increasing technological challenge from foreign countries losing shares of in ternational and domestic markets to foreign competitors he said there's a lot at stake the u.s currently has the number one construction market in the world it's about a 400 billion-dollar in dustry—that's about 10 percent of the gross national product a partnership with industry has been sought since the program's inception fisher and other project coordinators have encouraged structures-related companies to become research and financial partners in the enterprise sharing in the research processes research results data access to
