professor alan pense chairman of the newly formed faculty steering committee said the group - will conduct monthly meetings with president peter likins and will be responsible for coordinating the ac tivities of the other faculty committees likins speaking at monday's faculty meeting said the committee meetings will be confidential to better facilitate the group's action as a sounding board for him in the discussion of important university pohcy the steering committee consists of the chairmen of the educational policy committee the graduate committee the faculty compensation committee faculty financial planning and operations committee and last year's chairman of the faculty personnel committee other members include the forum faculty co-chairman and a representative of each of the three undergraduate colleges as well as one from the graduate school the faculty also discussed revisions to the university procedures regulations and requirements government professor howard whitcomb chairman of the committee which reorganized the document see committee page 10 forum examines aid by alicia orr athletic policy will be the biggest issue facing the forum this year according to forum xvi co-chairman judy lannin the forum athletic policy committee one of seven committees investigating lehigh's policy on athletic scholarships will be the only place for students to voice their opinions said lannin the university's social policy which was instituted last year will also be monitored and reviewed this year this year will make or break the new social policy said lannin if students fail to make the social policy work the restrictions will be en forced tougher than ever she said but she added the administration doesn't want to increase our rules and regulations because that would not educate the students according to lannin the forum with the help of vice president for academic services eric ottervik will also be looking at lehigh's new on-campus telecom munications and computer networking system the first forum xvi meeting of the semester is scheduled for 4 p.m tuesday sept 24 in room 308 of the university center sanford speaks on violent acts against women by karen schoono ver one out of every six girls on college campuses today will be sexually assaulted by someone they date linda sanford author of women and self esteem and improving the way we think and feel about ourselves said in a lecture tuesday night in packard lab auditorium some women feel that if a guy spends money on them that they're a terrible person for refusing sex for them it's a way of showing gratitude even if the women don't want to do it according to sanford women should not feel obligated to pay them back by giving in to sex sanford drew several connections among various sexual crimes such as rape exhibitionism assault and incest one connection she mentioned was the victim's tendency to take responsibility for the crime according to sanford it is human nature to want to be in control of oneself a woman who is raped often takes responsibility because she would rather feel guilty and responsible than be innocent and helpless sanford who runs a clinic for abused children and sex offenders used one of her patients as an illustration responding to a newspaper advertisement a woman went to a nearby apartment complex to inquire about the room for rent she was subsequently raped by the man showing her the room i remember her saying i should have known uhl named trustee chair edward uhl chairman of the board and chief executive officer of fairchild industries has assumed the chair manship of the lehigh board of trustees he is succeeding harold mohler who has retired as board chairman a position he held since 1973 mohler will continue to serve as a corporate trustee of the university uhl a lehigh alumnus who has served as vice chairman of the board since being named chairman-elect in june 1984 becomes the tenth board chairman in lehigh s 120-year history he was first appointed to the lehigh board in 1979 mohler also a lehigh alumnus and retired chairman of the board of hcrshey foods corp announced his plans to retire as chairman of the university's board of trustees last year uhl graduated from lehigh in 1940 with a bachelor of science degree in engineering physics and was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of science by the university in 1 975 . he was named chairman of the board of fairchild industries with headquarters at washinton's dulles international airport in 1976 after serving for more than 15 years as president in his initial announcement of uhl's election mohler said in the context of contemporary challenges to higher education present and future edward uhl will bring a distinctive com bination of expertise and interest to the chairmanship of the lehigh board of trustees his on-going record of success as innovator and executive in a high technology environment speaks for itself and his active involvement in lehigh affairs particularly in areas involving academics demonstrates his interest in all facets of educating today's young people in the context of see chairman page 13 there was no apartment for rent sign
