three part series on the tenure process at lahfcfc complaints of subjectivity and the lack of student input in evaluating faculty for tenure at lehigh has sparked controversy over the current process lawsuits such as the one brought by former assistant law professor james tobak against the university last year after he was refused tenure in the spring of 1983 as well as forum efforts to increase student involvement in the decision making process have brought the tenure process under the scrutiny of the university community tenure is the status obtained by full professors assistant professors and associate professors after a probationary period beginning when they are hired a faculty member who receives tenure which is awarded when the teaching research and service to the university of an assistant associate or full professor has been evaluated favorably cannot lose his teaching position without cause a faculty member who enters the university as a full or associate professor can be recommended for tenure after one semester of service if tenure is not granted within three years the professor receives written notice at the end of the third year that he or she will be terminated after the fourth year an assistant professor can be considered for tenure after one semester of service if tenure has not been granted after six years the assistant professor receives notification that he lose his position at the com pletion of his seventh year assistant professors are given a and associate professors generally begin their career at lehigh with more experience and do not need as much time to demonstrate their capabilities associate provost patti ota said the university rulebook procedures regulations and requirements says that tenure should be granted to faculty only when there is convincing positive evidence and a highly favorable peer evaluation average competence or lack of negative evidence does not constitute sufficient grounds for tenure the first phase of the evaluation process is a discussion of the merits of the faculty member presently up for tenure the department chairman and all tenured faculty members in that department are involved in the discussion if the department has less than three tenured faculty members the department chairman after consulting with the dean of the college involved chooses tenured faculty members from related departments to join the discussion the opinions of the evaluating committee are then summarized by the chairman and given to the dean in writing accompanied by an individual opinion written by each faculty member involved if the committee decides to grant tenure to the candidate the depart ment chairman selects a three member external committee to further evaluate the candidate's professional capabilities any disputes over membership are resolved by the provost the members of this com mittee then submit their opinions to the dean part two will discuss student in volvement in tenure 58 percent of lu alums give in 84 fifty-eight percent of lehigh's 31,000 un dergraduate alumni con tributed to the university during the 1984-83 fiscal year according to vice president for development paul franz on saturday more than 1,200 of those alumni and other friends of the university were honored at volunteer day for their service and contributions to lehigh many of the volunteers are involved in soliciting donations from alumni in part due to their efforts this see alums page 4 6 phi psi's cheat in ims committee sanctions after discussing the situation with phi psi's 1m manager the im board of supervisors sent the six individuals letters notifying them of their status according to schulze they ad mitted to part but did not deny anything on sept 17 house president david lerner attended another meeting with the board to argue that whatever happened was not sponsored by the organization lerner said it was the action of a few individuals who became o ver e rrth u s ias t i c . their golf score cards sept 10 phi psi is unrecognized as a fraternity at lehigh according to im director greg schulze the members of the group turned in golf scores for a game that never took place the individuals have been suspended from ims for the semester and are on probation through the spring semester phi kappa psi is on probation for the entire year the sanctions affect im participation
