215 861-4181 gloria wreaks havoc onlu campus tuesday october 1 1985 bethlehem pennsylvania by cara turkowsky the lehigh campus suffered exten sive damage as a result of hurricane gloria rain started falling thursday and continued through much of friday a record 8.75 inches of rain fell in the lehigh valley causing widespread flooding gusts of wind reached 56 mph i think we fared pretty well consid ering all the rain we had there are places worse off than lehigh com mented paul miller university direc tor of physical plant of facilities services there was water in almost every building miller said the univeristy center chandler-ullman hall drown hall and fairchild-martindale library all had leakage problems in mart carpets and walls were dam aged but no equipment damage was reported a large tree was blown down in front of trembley park apartments which was to be removed by yesterday miller said the worst damage occured near the intersection of taylor street and uni versity avenue behind lamberton hall where a section of road caved in closing it to traffic see floors page 4 chem physics may join arts grades policy changed by dave leight news editor as the result of a new university academic policy stu dents who receive an incomplete in a course may later receive a grade in the class without making up the missed work according to registrar claire biser under the new system she said professors must place an alternate letter grade in parentheses beside the grade n incomplete or x absence from the final examina tion on the final grade report the parenthetical grade is formed by averaging completed work with a zero score for incomplete assignments if the incomplete or final exam is not made up by the 10th class-day of the following semester it will be replaced by the grade in parentheses if students need more time to finish their incomplete work biser explained they must petition for an extension from the committee on standing of students approxi mately 250 incompletes are taken each semester at a recent faculty meeting economics professor eli schwartz pointed out the potential problem of students receiving a parenthetical grade without completing all the course requirements if a student has a high enough average schwartz added he may stop working presi dent likins asked the faculty committee on educational policy to further discuss the rule biser also mentioned the common misconception many students have that if they repeat a course the first grade will be wiped off their transcript the policy has been the deletion of a dor f from the cumulative average she said the quality points for the first grade will be removed from the average but it will not come off the student's record she stressed the policy has been in effect since 1971 in the air but i can't think of a single person who has said this is a bad idea likins said he may be able to present the recommendation to the trustees by their final meeting of the academic year in may and hopes to have a final decision from the trustees before the year is out the committee was formed to consider changes in the university structure which might enhance the development of science geology chairman bobb carson one of the committee members and former associate dean of the arts college said that as a scientist he felt the sciences would benefit by having them all under the same administrative unit it didn't matter to me whether that was arts engineering or a college of science once the sciences are together then you have to look at the large picture carson said the committee ruled out moving the sciences to the engineering college early in their discussions in their report the committee wrote the college of engineering and physical sciences already produces half the university's gradu ates and any additional skewing towards the dominant college seems unwise the resulting college would give lehigh the appearance of a technical institute carson gave similar reasons the five sciences biology chemistry geology mathematics and physics be consol idated under the college of arts and science at present chemistry and physics are under the college of engineering and physical scien ces with degree programs offered in both the arts college and the engineering college any restructuring of the arts or engineering col leges must be approved by the board of trustees the committee on university academic structure established last september and chaired by trustee william hi ttinger , rejected the idea of establishing a separate college of science one of three options the committee was investigating consideration was also given to unifying all five sciences under the engineering college the committee's report was submitted to president peter likins early in september likins said he approves of the recommenda tion but will only present it to the trustees if he is sure the faculty is comfortable with the idea you can't simply tell physics and chemis try professors that come monday they are part of a new college likins said he will be consulting with faculty to gauge their support for the proposition we're not expecting any major opposition " he said
