concert-lec ture series have been greeted although the program consisted of numbers unknown for the most part to lehigh audiences the fine rendering of their religious and folk songs and the riotous shouts and whistling in their cossack war songs made the famous a capella chorus favorites here as they are in all other parts of the world a series of religious songs ex pressing the characteristic mysti cism of russian religious music won the immediate approval of the audience favorite in this group was gretchaninoff's prayers to the lord which they sang with unusually fine rhythm sing folk songs the second section of the pro gram dealt with russian folk scngs characteristic of their ren dition of these numbers was a dis tinct cheerful and care-free man ner feature of the program was the thriling knife dance in which knives were juggled on the dan cer's chin in the course of his presentation the dancer threw each knife into the stage from a national defense will be the subject of a talk by general frank d beery of allentown at the 22nd annual american chemical society christmas banquet at 6 p m tuesday dec 16 at the masonic temple general beery spoke at a simi lar banquet two years ago he has been in the national guard for 44 years working up from a private to a brigadier-general during the spanish-american war he was in charge of supplying rations for the troops and refugees in southern puerto rico he was promoted to a major and served on the mexican border in 1916 in 1917 general beery was ap pointed adjutant-general of penn sylvania by governor tener later he was appointed by governor pennypacker to train organize equip and house the pennsylvan ia state police at wilkes barre he has been president of the adjutant general association of the united states
