intramural debaters pick 19 teams to compete for williams prize planned for 7:30 a m arcadia plans meeting for football squad friday morning rally at station to send team on to virginia price — five cents an enthusiastic crowd waits with open hands to catch the cigarettes being distributed at the muhlenberg pep rally friday night in grace hall — b w photo eligibility list is announced 42 engineers to make trip 31 juniors may compete for scabbard and blade in pledging quiz have choice of inspecting plants in new york or detroit areas the town council added two more living groups to its member ship this week as leonard hall and the cosmopolitan club joined the expanding union of town men the two groups who will send repre sentatives to the meeting of the council tonight bring the total number of living units in the town council to 14 leonard hall located at 826 delaware avenue is composed of 11 students sixteen men the ma jority of whom are students of foreign nationality make up the cosmopolitan club at 217 west packer avenue president resigns election of a new town council president will feature tonight's meeting arthur tallaksen bus.'42 elected by the town men as their head at the general may elections has announcd his resignation the council which includes the 14 heads of the town sections and other member living groups will select one of its members to the vacant post the problem of town lodging will be discussed at tonight's meet ing trophies for winners in the intramural sports and keys for council members are topics to be considered dorms to alter dining system by john f hannan the inter-fraternity ball will be held in grace hall on saturday feb 14th it was decided by the if council at a meeting held last night in drown hall two orches tras will be engaged for the dance third largest social event of the year as no name band will sign a contract this far in advance the council's choice of orchestras is not known as yet it is to be noted that feb 14 is also the date of the lehigh-penn wrestling match a home event oakley w cooke bus 42 head of the committee on deferred rush ing announced that a letter con cerning deferred rushing had been sent to each fraternity the letter is to be answered as soon as possible and the possibility of delaying the rushing season until january or february will be discussed despite this formality several fraternities have already expressed their dis approval of any deferment of rush ing will judge displays the council decided to draw up a committee shortly to judge the fraternity displays during lafay ette week-end the houses are us ually decorated by the freshmen in some manner depicting a lehigh victory over lafayette in the ann ual football classic the house with the most origin al decoration will be awarded a vote of 249 to 51 favors serving evening meal 2 groups to vote continued on page four several hundred dads attending lehigh's second annual dad's day observed their collegiate sons in action at a pep rally on friday night in grace hall at classes on saturday morning at the muhlen berg football game on saturday af ternoon and in and around the maennerchor and other local high spots on saturday night the pep rally for the muhlen berg game started the weekend friday evening in grace hall in cluding dads and dates approxi mately 1,400 people were present main feature of the evening were speeches by alumni who included herbert j hartzog 04 charles l t edwards 13 samuel t harle man 01 vincent j pazzetti jr 15 walter r okeson 96 howard bosey reiter also spoke the speeches were followed by a movie entitled 1940 gridiron parade henry t reuwer bus 42 captain of the football team and wilkes mcclave 11 bus 42 president of arcadia both spoke briefly after the movies cigarettes pipes and and tobacco were dis tributed before the speakers were introduced and much enthusiasm was seen to be present the rally ended after a few cheers and yells dads attend forum on mineral production of the various countries of the world dr edward sampson professor of economic geology at princeton university told 100 members and friends of sigma xi last night in packard auditorium that the united states is in the most favorable position of all na tions in regard to mineral wealth dr bradford willard professor of geology presided at the geologi cal society meeting attended by students faculty and guests of the bethlehem steel corporation dr sampson stated that the united states with all her min eral wealth however is lacking in tin manganese chromium and nickel ores some of these defici encies are made up by ores from canada and south america dr sampson said that the war hazard is felt in obtaining chrom ium from south africa and tin from east indies he gave the united states an ar bitrary rating of 29 the british empire a rating of 21.6 and dom estic germany 8.2 in discussing the relative mineral wealth of these three powers germany with its conquered territory however was assigned a 24 rating the united states owes its high rating to its large area and the varied geographical regions dr sampson said in conclusion he questioned the frequently observ ed newspaper articles which ad vocate the giving of all countries the same access to minerals does this mean we should give germany a part of arizona to make up part of her deficiency in copper epstein when the boys had finished their masterpiece of construction they got the bright idea of not letting it go to waste until the end of the month therefore they splattered a bit of red paint and ketchup on the front shirt of our friend and placed a lovely steak knife in his bosom the effect was perfect the boys rushed through the dormitory yelling for a doctor but since there was no such animal they were temporarily squelched senior is victim at this point it was decided to see what an innocent naive sen ior would do if he found a dead man in his closet so the dummy was thrown neatly into the room of harold w haines ch e 42 haines came back to his room and strolled around for a half hour during which time the freshmen tore their hair out in anticipation of what was to come finally mineral production of the various countries of the world dr edward sampson professor of economic geology at princeton university told 100 members and friends of sigma xi last night in packard auditorium that the united states is in the most favorable position of all na tions in regard to mineral wealth dr bradford willard professor of geology presided at the geologi cal society meeting attended by students faculty and guests of the bethlehem steel corporation dr sampson stated that the united states with all her min eral wealth however is lacking in tin manganese chromium and nickel ores some of these defici encies are made up by ores from canada and south america dr sampson said that the war hazard is felt in obtaining chrom ium from south africa and tin from east indies he gave the united states an ar bitrary rating of 29 the british empire a rating of 21.6 and dom estic germany 8.2 in discussing the relative mineral wealth of these three powers germany with its conquered territory however was assigned a 24 rating the united states owes its high rating to its large area and the varied geographical regions dr sampson said in conclusion he questioned the frequently
