to the faculty last week â– sanchez presently chairman of the depart ment of mathematics at the university of new mexico would succeed arthur humphrey who is retiring from his position as vice president and provost at the end of the spring semester spring semester i'm a little apprehensive sanchez said about the new job which he would assume on july 1 1986 to be perfectly honest with you it's a little scary he expressed concern with the fact that he would be involved in the administration rather than the faculty aspect of a university which he has become accustomed to however sanchez said he is very excited about the new position president likins is also excited about the decision i am pleased with the outcome of this search and expect dr sanchez to serve with distinction in this lower campus according to director of lab safety frank michclotti according to michelotti a post-graduate student poured some carbon disulfide down a drain in the seeley mudd building and toxic waste fumes spread via the sewer system to other buildings including christmas-saucon hall fairchild-martindale library chandler-ullmann hall and linderman library carbon disulfide is a volatile flammable material michelotti said he added that when the odor was first noticed at approximately 2 p.m he thought it was a gas leak in chandler-ullmann the vapors may be fatal if inhaled swallowed or ab sorbed through the skin and can cause fires and ex plosions according to michelotti luckily this did not happen but could have very easily under yesterday's conditions michelotti said he spoke to the student who poured the chemical in the drain and the individual recognized that he did something stupid he disposed of it in an improper way according to berry richards director of university libraries both more parking problems than already existed and complained that parking around williams and drown hall is presently so difficult that the resolution would only make the situation worse the students on the other hand said the policy was already unofficially in effect percent of the graduate students preferred a formal graduation ceremony the january ceremony would parallel the format of the founder's day exercises and would probably be held in packer chapel with the reception to be held on lower campus there has been a significant rise in the number of october and january graduates in the past few years mills ex plained and they deserve recognition as much as june graduates the main thrust of the resolution is to reward recognition to students who meet the requirements for graduation irregardless of when they fulfill their requirements he said university marshall and education professor raymond bell said the community relations office which organizes all formal resolution which will now be sent to the president's council calk for formal ceremonies to be held at each commencement exercise the ceremonies will include in dividual awarding of diplomas by the president or ap propriate dean an outside speaker for each com mencement an undergraduate speaker at the june ceremony and graduate speakers at the october and january ceremonies dean robert mills of the college of business and economics co-chairman of the commencement exercises subcommittee said a poll of january 1986 graduates found that 90 percent of the un dergraduate students and 70 the brown
