ryan managing editor the college of arts and science policy committee last tuesday approved two separate proposals calling for a change in the college's distribution system and an increase in the minimum hours required for a bachelor of arts degree according to a memorandum distributed to the arts college faculty the first proposal will change the current distribution system in several ways first the new system establishes a general skills requirement tinder which students will have to take six hours of english com position six to eight hours of mathematics and six to eight hours of foreign language under the math requirement one course has to be pure mathematics while the other may be logic or computer progamming however under the language requirement culture courses will no longer count as substitutes secondly the proposed system would expand the distribution requirements from three broad categories to five more specific ones natural science would be divided into physical sciences and life sciences while the humanities would be separated into a straight humanities category and a performing and studio arts category the social sciences category would remain intact completing the distribution requirements would require taking six to 10 hours of physical sciences three to four hours of life sciences 12 to 13 hours of social sciences 12 hours of humanities and three hours of performing and studio arts the outline of the proposed system calls for students to complete the distribution requirements by the end of the junior year prior to this one hour of choices and decisions labeled an arts college requirement must be completed by the end of the freshman year the general skills requirements would be completed by the end of the sophomore year finally the new distribution system would no longer distinguish between preliminary and upperclass distribution and would eliminate current distribution subcategories by assigning virtually every course to one of the five main categories according to the memo this will allow students to take a wider variety of courses than is presently required while allowing them to take sequences of courses within a discipline for distribution credit also courses taken to fulfill majors would also count for distribution requirements since these courses would be assigned to one of the five distribution categories the second proposal calls for increasing the minimum number of credit hours required for a bachelor of arts see arts page 4 centennial school assists the emotionally disturbed 7 by brian cooke
