lehigh university brown and white vol 83-no 12 tuesday october 19 1971 866-033 scheduling revisions approved by forum yesterday the university forum approved the recommendation that the registrar return to the former method of scheduling the forum also approved recommendations concerning the problems of the in touch program the scheduling subcommittee also urged that future schedules be formulated before preregistration and that tuesday thursday and friday night undergraduate classes be eliminated the resolution stated that one night a week should be used for classes the recommendation also suggested that no undergraduate classes be scheduled between 4 p.m and 7 p.m except for those activities which traditionally meet at that time such as the band and rotc the subcommittee noted that classes should be scheduled so that every student may eat lunch also included ln the recommendations approved by the forum was the provision no class should meet within 24-hours of itself in the same mode of instruction thus a lecture and laboratory section may meet on the same day but two recitation classes should not meet within any 24-hour period in other forum action walter hilton student director of in touch recommended that the forum conduct an investigation into the delays and legal implications which have hampered the implementation of the program the in touch program is a drug referral service he also suggested the results of an investigation by the student affairs committee be presented to the forum ln november delay institution the program has disillusionment among volunteers h the body and persons who might help hilton also pointed drug campus express the urgency the institution of a program shown above is preston parr vice president for student affairs announcing to the forum that the meetings regarding the all-university complex will begin friday november 12 to the right is forum chairman curtis w clump dean yates resigns arts dean sought dr w ross yates will resign as dean of the college of arts and sciences effective june 30 1972 according to yates his request which has been granted will allow him to return to full-time teaching and research in the department of government while remaining as dean of the arts college during the spring semester yates will teach one course in political values a nine-man committee headed by prof richard malsberger of the biology depart ment has been appointed to conduct the search for a successor to yates others on the committee include prof arthur brody psychology ; prof robert cutler music prof joseph dowling history prof james frakes english and prof arthur pitcher mathematics also on the committee will be three students and one faculty member yet to be appointed contemporary political values said yates motivated him in his decision for some months i have been studying in the field of contemporary values and i find a very real need for a good deal of analytical work there both to improve the discipline of political science and to put contemporary values into some per spective for the benefit of students i want to write a book on contemporary values which would provide an analytical account of trends such as those repre sented by the marxists of all persuasions liberals conservatives pragmatists dr w ross yates trustees decide to continue study of ten year program lehigh's board of trustees voted to continue an on-going study of the proposed ten year development program friday in a regular session the board assigned the national campaign and the planning development committees to conduct further study and report to the january 197 2 session these are standing committees of the board of trustees they include representatives from all consti tuencies of the lehigh community student and faculty members involved are from the all-university forum the trustees discussed primarily the recommendations of the forum which voted to amend the ten year plan submitted by its planning priorities and resources pp & r committee the final decision on the projects will be made by the trustees who received the revised recommendation for the development plan for the first time the main point of contention in the two long-range programs revolves around the proposed 6 million all university complex and a 2.5 million conversion of grace hall into a theater both proposed plans agree on the 67 million total for the program the pp & r committee proposed that the multi-purpose complex be constructed â– in saucon valley the proposed complex was to accomodate university convoca tions cultural programs intercollegiate and intramural sports meetings of local and campus groups would have access to the facilities the committee also rec ommended the conversion of grace hall into a theater and performing arts center last week the forum voted in favor of eliminating the all university complex and recommended that a creative arts wing be added to a new academic build ing grace hall would be retained as an intercollegiate athletic facility taylor gym would be renovated to accomodate more intramural sports and a new intra mural facility would be constructed the most significant recommendation by the committee was to allow more funds for endowment and library pur poses the group also recommended that lehigh create a theater with the aid of the city of bethlehem and area colleges b&w photo by kendi paul j franz jr vice president of development and prof charles f vihon discussing the question of priorities in friday's board of trustees meeting applications rise class size grows at a greater rate by pat fekula although most private colleges in the united states received fewer freshman applications this year lehigh valley pri vate colleges are still running on an even keel at three area schools lehigh laf ayette and muhlenberg the applications are still on the upswing however although the number of appli cants has increased at lehigh in three years the number of applicants accepted has increased by a far greater margin in 1968 lehigh received 3200 freshman applications about 2000 students were accepted with 808 matriculating as of 1971 the university received about 3400 applications 2700 being accepted with 1044 matriculating lafayette although a much smaller school received about 3300 applications this fall with 1400 acceptances and 18 matriculating muhl enberg in 1970 received 1365 applications compared with 1600 received in 1971 thus while the applications have in creased six per cent the number accept ed has increased 35 per cent the per centage of applicants accepted has gone from 61 per cent in 1968 to 71 per cent in 1971 see admission page 4 see yates page 4 film series cancelled due te a dispute with their film rental agency and poor attendance at its showings the sponsors of the alfred packer cannibal classics film series have an nounced the cancellation of the series the program had been started at the beginning of the year as an experiment and was held every tuesday evening the an nouncement ls effective and the remaining schedule for the series should be disregarded however the other two film series on campus epiphany ii and myopic montage will continue to present films every friday and saturday evening ln packard lab auditorium
