brown and white vol 83 - no 22 mmmmmmmsm tuesday november 23 1971 866-0331 lafayette devoured 48-19 by paul decoursey one would be hard pressed to find a person in a sane state who considered leopard meat a delicacy yet saturday a goodly number of supposedly normal young men known as the lehigh football team dined on just that their favorite dish as the engineers devoured lafayette's leopards by a 48-19 score they never ate a better meal chief cooks for the feast were two italian fellows who brought along a few recipes from the old country jack rizzo and don diorio finished out their careers at the university with their best days ever rizzo with 313 yards rushing in 31 carries set lehigh records for single game and season rushing yardage and when teamed with diorio 32 for 194 set new marks in one-game rushing seasonal rushing and season scoring all in an afternoon's work but what made the dinner all the more palatable was the fine effort put forth by the engineer defense they were burned but once on an 83-yard touchdown pass but of course even the most experienced chefs err on occasion for most of the first half however the university had trouble just setting the table they did manage to score a field goal in the initial quarter as chuck merolla booted one through from 15-yards out he duplicated the feat from the twelve six minutes later to make it 6-0 in the beginning moments of the second period the university blew a chance for the touchdown on that series with an offsides penalty on the lafayette one the leopards could not move on the the post lafayette game rampage bursting forth observe the see-saw affect required to rip down the goal posts and how the policemen in the back ground are moving in to quell the uprising b&w photo by hyde touchdown jack rizzo rings up another score in the lafayette game this i year rizzo scored 129 points which included 21 touchdowns six former lehigh administrators honored in centennial dedication by maria zumas six former administrators of the university were posthumously honored on saturday morning nov 20 some 40 relatives of the six men were special guests of the university at the official dedication ceremonies of the newest residence halls on campus which include housing of the university's first coeds comprising the complex are stevens house williams house beardslee house palmer house stoughton house and carothers house adjacent to the complex is rathbone dining hall which will be dedicated in the spring these new living units are named in honor of men who uniquely and appropriately served lehigh in all phases of its academic structure college of arts and science college of business and economics and college of engineering 1 stated frank c rabold a trustee of the university and bethlehem steel corp officer who presided at the ceremony they also represent former presidents of the university and trustees and a past chaplain all of whom placed the university community especially students above self rabold said rabold then declared the residence halls dedicated to the use and care of lehigh students of the residence halls council he then recognized the descendants of the honored men who were present among the representatives for the late dr clement c williams who was lehigh's seventh president 1935-1944 was his widow mrs williams of madison wisconsin included among the representatives of the chaplain beardslee family were dean and mrs preston parr mrs parr is a daughter of dr beardslee while mr parr is a vice-president of the university the representatives of the dean carothers dean palmer bishop stevens and dean stoughton familiers were also recognized rabold then turned the program over to edward a curtis a trustee of the university who presented the living units to dr w.deming lewis president of the university and w glover housman jr 72 president of the residence halls council spirits undampened as 1000 attend rally by amin khalifa the bonfire pep rally friday night was a complete success as well over i,qoo lehigh supporters turned out the bonfire which had been guarded without incident thursday was 40-feet high the rain and cold did not dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic crowd and the bonfire itself burned well a snack bar was set up as well as two platforms one for the band and one for the speakers fred dunlap head football coach was introduced to the crowd by master of ceremonies steckbeck dunlap said a few things about the football team and predicted victory john hill the big center also tried to reassure the crowd that the team would win he added i've played in this game before and it's totally different you're out there just hitting guys and it takes a while for both teams to really start playing football president lewis was then serenaded onto the platform by the band who sang parties and banquets the rousing cheer cannot be reprinted here for obvious reasons dr lewis then commented that the band is one of the most intellectual groups i know the computer was obviously his next topic although it rained last friday night the weather did not hinder the plan ned activities over 1000 engineer supporters listened to speeches and watched the pile of wood bum in contrast the lafayette bonfire was cancelled and a parade through their campus attracted only 150 people b&w photo by legrand see
