lehigh university brown and white vol 83 - no 24 bethlehem pa tuesday december 7 1971 866-0331 admissions reduced for the class of 1 976 by bruce g toole a reduction in admissions for the class of 1976 was announced at thursday's meeting of the academic affairs com mittee reports were also made on scheduling and calendar changes it was reported that next fall's incoming class will number about 900 as opposed to the 1050 students who entered the class of 1975 the breakdown will be 800 men and 100 women applications have reportedly decreased this year indicating a similar drop in the number of enrollments for the coming academic year however incoming transfer requests have increased sharply from 20 to 75 most students coming from local community colleges the subcommittee on scheduling chaired by dr eric v ottervik vice provost announced in a written report that it endorses the recommendation of the administrative systems office . . that we do not attempt to computerize the scheduling operations in the registrar's office at this time the report cited several reasons for its action including insufficient need i.e lehigh does not have huge enrollments class quotas etc unreasonable cost and apparent satisfaction with next semester's schedule the report went on to say that the subcommittee will continue investigating ways of eliminating wednesday evening classes the subcommittee is considering the possibility of 75-minute classes on tuesdays and thursdays the administrative systems office is continuing work with the registrar's office on streamlining operations and on the creation of a student data base a pool of general information on the student body they will keep up-to-date inform ation on other schools computerization systems in the event such operations become appropriate at lehigh at a later date dr glenn j christensen reported that calendar changes are being investigated in terms of information from other schools he said a committee would be formed and questionnaires distributed in the spring it was also announced that professor norman p melchert chairman of the division of philosophy and vice-chairman of the academic affairs committee will be going on leave in the spring elections to choose his successor on the committee will be held on dec 16 at the committee's final meetine of the semester b&w photo by smar number of with full sails this is the essence of a report to the forum by its representatives to the trustees the report discusses the business of the october meeting of the board of trustees according to reports presented at that meeting lehigh will incur a projected net deficit of 23,462 and that negotiations are underway to recoup losses from stock in a cuban mining operation it was also reported that returns to the university investment portfolio were down significantly over the last five years the annual giving fund goal for 1971-72 has been established at a figure higher than the sl.l s million raised during the 1970-71 campaign both endowment and research figures are up from last year the representatives account of the meeting includes a report by the university treasurer elmer w glick which states that although the university realized a net operating income greater than that budgeted for the fiscal year ending june 30 1971 . . the university will still have a net deficit budget of 23,462 the total operating budget of the university is 16-million glick also reported that complicated negotiations are underway with respect to shares of stock the university holds in the now defunct cuban lehigh company elmer w glick in touch future dim insurance is denied by patrick fekula a visibly irked wauy hilton announced last night at the university forum meeting that the in touch drug program of which he is director will not be receiving the liability insurance it had been waiting for since september with no insurance in touch which has been in the organizational stages since april 1971 will not be able to operate as planned hilton stated the surprise statement came at the end of a routine forum meeting in which members heard university president w deming lewis voice a plea for more needed athletic facilities so there may be more space made available for intramural activities hilton who earlier in the semester spoke to the forum on the urgent need for in touch on campus cited what he called an almost unfortunate circumstance which he stated happened before the white trash king crimson concert held lafayette weekend while i was not present on campus at the time he stated it was relayed to me that a group of about 15 students decided to trip on the drug mescaline before the concert mixing the drug with punch he continued the group then proceeded to drink it in the course of this action three of the participants had bummers or a bad trip if the wrong action would have been taken he went on the result could have been three doa's at the nearest hospital fortunately for the university nothing else occured hilton then stated that this was probably the strongest example he could use to cite the need for in touch but could also be supported by numerous examples he had had personal contact with restating his position he questioned the reasoning behind why lehigh wanted the program to be covered by liability insurance when he relnerated no other college in over 50 we contacted had seen the need for such insurance with their drug programs in other forum business the academic affairs committee reported a study had been made and completed concerning the computerization of future scheduling of classes by the university the committee recommended the university not attempt to computerize scheduling because lehigh does not have the problem
