brown and white vol 83 - no 27 wmmmmmmmmmmm bethlehem pa friday december 17 1971 mmm 866-0331 class cut follows original plan by vernon bourn ique next year's freshman class will not be quite as large as this year's the class of 76 will number approximately 900 students 800 men and 100 women the present freshman class was the university's largest with 1050 the announcement was made in the dec 2 meeting of the forum's academic affairs committee several other proposals and recommendations concern ing admissions were made at the meeting the reduction in class size came as little surprise to samuel h missimer director of admissions the reduction in the size of the freshman class is not a surprise missimer said tradition ally our freshman class has been composed of 800 men and the coeducation plan originally called for us to admit 100 women next year missimer conceded that there were extraordinary reasons for admitting a large freshman class this year i was told that one reason was the budget had to be balanced he said missimer noted that this year there may be other reasons for admitting a smaller class one problem is the housing situation on campus missimer observed that there isn't enough housing available for another class of the size admitted this year another fear raised in the committee meeting was the fact that applications are decreasing in number this too was not surprising to missimer appli cations are not as high as they have been in the past and this is particularly true of private colleges across the country he said there are several reasons why the university should experience a decrease in applications this year chief among them is the fact that it is a private institution and expensive this year the university experienced a remarkable increase in the number of transfer students ninety students decided to switch to the university in the past fewer than 30 students transferred to lehigh in any given year missimer pre dicted that the number of transfer students will increase and he is investigating new transfer policies and the difficulties in evaluating transfer credits samuel h missimer campus police cite frustations in u security editor's note this is the last of three articles dealing with the problems of campus security by david ingram the campus police are the most con troversial link in the chain of campus security they are charged with pre vention of crime on campus yet they do not have the expertise the equipment or the authority to act for the solution of any of these cri mes . they find additional frustration in the constant abuse from students there are three areas in which the campus police need additional help in the size of the force in the training of the force and in the relations with the students lehigh university has a total force of 11 men with no more than two cars on patrol at any time to protect over 80 buildings spread over 200 acres this problem is accentuated during the day because captain frank donchez finds that he is increasingly being kept from patrol by administrative needs during the night all of the academic buildings are being protected solely by the campus police with the addition of the buildings on packard ave there has been no increase in the campus force when significant thefts occur it is standard procedure for the city police detectives to be called in to investigate since the crime falls under their authority and the city has the equipment and resources to handle these cases thus the kirk proclaims that this is an age of decadence after expressing his pleasure at being at the university and in christmas city u.s.a at this time of the year russell kirk said we live in an age of decadence the noted conservative thinker and author supported his statement by saying that president nixon recently declared this country decadent according to kirk our decadence is evidenced by this down with people movement the topic of his address kirk defined decadence as a time when society loses its ends or aims and the bonds of brotherhood are broken it is when we ask if life is worth living and the answer is negative it is an irreligious movement that denies the goodness of life he said he continued it is a satanic mistake to deny that life is good kirk stated that there are three distinct marks of decadence and that they are all present in our society he implied that the triumph of the ego and the pursuit of personal satisfaction have reached the proportions realized in ancient rome and may bring a similar fate to our society the second mark of societal decline is a disregard for world and social re sponsibility and the third is the loss of respect for human life and dignity accord ing to kirk to combat this trend toward decadence kirk espoused a society concerned with people he said there is a need to counteract the anti social anti-people movements in our society down with babies he noted that some sectors of society are attempting to separate not only sex from love but sex from its results according to kirk when you separate love from sex there's not much left with regard to separating the rules of love and courtship from sex kirk said sex is like chess if you abolish the rules the game is no longer interesting in discussing the elimination of the results of sex kirk blasted the abortion on-demand supporters and said that sex without children is dehumanizing he stated that the women's lib zealots and others who advocate wide-spread con traception and abortion are driven by the notion that sex would be enjoyable if not b&w photo by richardson noted conservative russell kirk speaks about what he calls the down with people movement before a sparse audience in parkard lab audit orium tuesday car
