hall thursday feb 24 at 8:30 p.m as this year's annual berman lecturer okun a member of time magazine's board of economists has made numerous predictions on economic matters including a forecasted rise in the nation's gross national product to 1148-billion the dr arthur m okun board's predictions appear in the jan 10 issue of time the lecture an agenda for political economy the next decade will conclude lehigh's 3rd annual economics week a four-day program of economics-oriented activities all of which are open free of charge to the public okun is scheduled to discuss the conflict inherent in the attempt to achieve price stability on one hand and full employment on the other and whether to employ mone tary policy control of the money supply or fiscal policy control of expenditures and taxation to help the situation members of lehigh's economics depart ment will open economics week monday feb 21 with a repeat of last year's highly successful panel discussion ask the economist the panel will field questions from members of the audience on a wide variety of economic and social issues a showing of the film inflation produced by the committee for economic development will precede the discussion in whitaker auditorium at 8 p.m on wednesday feb 23 there will be a panel discussion titled economics and the environment at 8 p.m in whitaker lab auditorium one question to be dis cussed is should the environment be managed by the use of economic incentives or legal fiat okun will also hold a press conference thursday feb 24 at 10:30 a.m in the studios of wlvt-tv channel 39 the station will air the conference friday mar 3 at 10 p.m an interview with okun on manager's chat by sheldon p siegel channel 39 vice-president and general manager will be aired on wednesday mar 1 at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m the lecture series is made possible through a gift from mr and mrs philip i be r man of allentown okun is the second lecturer in the series which pre sented dr paul a samuelson the 1970 nobel laureate in economics last year architect for all u-complex recommended the student affairs committee of the forum announced tuesday that the architect for the all university complex has been chosen dean of student affairs preston parr stated that the project is hoped to be started by april 1 1972 parr also reported that the architect for the rhii housing project had been chosen and that project is expected to be completed by sept 73 the name of the architect will not be released until after the committee's recommendation is approved by the trustees said parr in a discussion on the all university complex dean of student life william quay stated that he felt the complex could be used for recreational and intra mural needs as well as a sports arena chairman of the student affairs committee prof george high costs explained applications slow students from families in the middle class income bracket are the ones hurt most by tuition increases said samuel missimer director of admissions in a recent interview applications are somewhat behind last year he said although final totals will not be known until may the largest decline has been in applicants interested in engineering a trend that has also been noted at public institutions he blamed this decline on publicity about the difficulty in findinga job as anengineer missimer pointed out that as of august less than three percent of the engineering graduates from lehigh were unemployed william stanford director of financial aid said that an attempt would be made to provide the same or possibly a larger percentage of incoming freshmen with financial aid at present approximately 25 percent of enrolled freshmen receive financial aid from the university additional funds will be needed for those students already receiving aid and also for those students who may need financial aid as a result of the tuition increase this assumes that lehigh will continue to attract students of the same socio economic mix as in the past stanford noted that other private institu tions have had to increase tuition but that there is a widening gap between the cost of education at public and private institu tions he said that many who have studied the problem feel it would cost the taxpayer less if tuition at public universities was raised to more accurately reflect the cost of educating the student and also if the number of grants to students was raised this would give the student a wider choice of universities to attend and decrease the duplication of aid on a nationwide basis the growth in enrollment at private institutions has de creased from 3.6 percent in 1965-66 to 0.2 percent in 1971-72 also the pro portion of those accepted to those enroll ing has declined from 66 percent to 58 percent over the same period according to an article in the chronicle of higher education a change in public policy to narrow the tuition gap plus more recruit ment by private institutions must be made if these trends are to be changed sam'uel missimer forum begins new semester questioning its role at lehigh by john klucsik with one of the shortest meetings in its history the university forum resumed operation for the second semester monday night at 7:30 p.m during the official business portion of the meeting several reports were sub mitted among them one on the fund raising new century campaign listing the increased expenditures and objectives approved by the trustees some expenditures include the renovation of the first floor of grace hall for performing and creative arts 1.5 million indoor athletics 3.2 million convocation and spectator sport facilities 2.8 million a report of the planning and develop ment committee noted that construction of the 675,000 building for the centennial school will be completed by march it was also reported that the married and graduate student housing in saucon valley may be ready by the summer of 1973 in the informal session which followed the half hour business meeting several students questioned the ability of the forum to handle the major questions of university government some students and faculty members questioned the role played by the forum in the decision making process generally the mood was one of disillusionment and impotence students urged the forum to consider its direction and even the goals and direction of the university we don't know what we want the university to be was one comment lack of communications on almost all levels was noted and the possibility of establishing an internal newssheet to inform the alumni and students was
