lehigh university brown and white mmamaemmmmfmmmm vol 83 - no 43 bethlehem pa friday march 24 1972 866-033 urban renewal planned for south side district by amin khalifa jim ponder representing south side 76 spoke tuesday evening m front of the planning priorities and resources com munity relations committees of the forum he explained the south bethlehem renewal project called south side 76 this project aims to revitalize the south bethlehem community a highway unking interstate 78 to the hill-to hill bridge is the major proposal of the plan if the south side 76 com mittee approves the plan and if funds are available which is doubtful a multi million dollar over the ground highway will be built on the present site of the reading tracks and third st this plan calls for the destruction of about 200 homes 50 businesses and at least one institution this is over 500 sites less than the assessment of highway engineers m the early sixties this highway would go back to ground level after passing through downtown south bethlehem supposedly the best looking and the type of highway offering the most parking space is the over ground one which will cost a good deal more than a ground level highway unfortunately third st businesses will be virtually sealed off from the rest of the town and will probably close down soon after construction begins with this large highway fourth st will become a major shopping area south side 76 which hopes to start the project by 1976 is a committee consisting of seven neighborhood representatives and 11 representatives of business and other interests m south bethlehem each other interest including lehigh has one representative they employed gruen as sociates a consulting firm to formulate an ideal plan of south bethlehem the consultants drew maps and checked on the feasibility of different sites for the high way they also planned more recreational facilities and planned an additional 988 dwelling units m east bethlehem the committee then chose certain of the gruen plans m subcommittees which looked at each aspect m depth the entire plan lias been assembled and will go m front of the entire committee for a vote soon ponder expected that the proposal would carry the plan affects lehigh n three ways the webster lot will be lost to allow a diagonal road to link fourth to fifth bt secondly one of the possible business district arrangements shows the business district joining lehigh at the present site of the tuning forks this type of arrange ment will only be passed if the university approves also the university will be limited m growth northward towards fourth st any expansion will be east ward across the street from the alumni memorial building this plan overall is a conceptual look at an ideal south bethlehem it depends wholly on state and federal funding since the cost would be too much for the com munity to bear paul franz vice pres ident - development at lehigh was skeptical of having the grace hail last tuesday night described his new book something happened which he says is not another catch-22 for a story on heller see page 6 charges raised in student riff three get weeks leave peter beyrodt 75 has brought charges of assault and battery against vernon hammond 75 and edward arrendell 75 last friday following a scuffle which occured m front of the university post office m the uc on march 7 a special ad hoc discipline committee headed by dean of students charles brennen sent the three students away from the university for a week's leave the incident will not go on the student's records and they were not suspended from the university at the hearing last friday district magistrate john gombosi said he would withhold any action for 30 days and if there is no further harrassment bey rodt would drop charges the incident started on march 3 when several students were throwing snowballs at each other m front of richards house several boys yelled from richards at the youths throwing the snowballs out front and were subsequently barraged with snowballs both sides were then involved m an altercation m richards but there was no incident according to brennen the fight occured on march 7 when beyrodt was walking up the stairs from the uc after having lunch brennen said beyrodt had been among the group who had had the snowballs thrown at them beyrodt claimed that several youths appeared to be waiting for him as he ascended the stairs he said he stopped to look at the uc bulletin board across from the post office and was hit from behind by one of the students who participated m the incident m front of richards a few days earlier beyrodt was accompanied by a friend who then joined m the fighting officer baise of the campus police who was having lunch m the snack bar at the time was notified and quelled the scuffle beyrodt and his friend claimed that they had been hit with a blackjack but the other youths denied the charge no black jack was found however beyrodt's injury was serious enough to warrant an x-ray at the hospital for a possible skull frac ture but the results were negative there was a preliminary hearing held at lehigh with john daniels prof of civl engineering ray armstrong prof of english nathan harris asst dean of levara seeks reforms in po abortion legislation by bill white editor's note this is the final por tion of a three-part series on the ab ortion movement m the lehigh valley this part deals with the abortion rights advocates new jersey's abortion law which permits abortions only to save a moth er's life was held unconstitutional by a three-judge panel m trenton they ruled the law violates a woman's right to privacy and is unconstitutionally vague on its face because it doesn't protect doctors from possible prosecu tion if they give abortion advices wall street journal march 2 1972 just as the anti abortion forces m the lehigh valley consist of two major groups--one active and one advisory so do the abortion rights advocates the lehigh valley abortion rights association levara engages m abroad range of activities they participate m legislative lobbying and campaigning by campaigning against probable " no voters on abortion and campaigning for candi dates who will vote yes for abortion they hope to influence the state legislative process they attempt to educate people on abortion — their representatives speak to high schools churches and women's groups levara establishes alliances with other organizations which take an abortion reform stand and seeks support from individuals and groups who may be sym pathetic levara consists of about 60 volunteers who according to mrs solveig stengle the group's chairman really educated ourselves after the mullen bill which would outlaw all abortions was intro duced into the state legislature their basic policy is simple abortion should be a decision left to the pregnant woman says mrs stengle and that's the goal levara is working toward by calling 437-6911 women with prob lem pregnancies can be referred to one of eight ministers m the lehigh valley who rotate as counselors for the clergy counseling service ccs when the pregnant woman is given an appointment she is asked to bring a dated note from an obstetrician or gynecologist which should also include the length of the pregnancy to that point she is also asked to bring a donation which helps finance the operation ccs sends some women to new york for legal abortions rev james rumsey of allen town minister of urban affairs for the presbytery of lehigh is the coordinator for the group he says the number of calls varies tremendously from six or seven calls over a two-week period the length of each clergyman's shift to only one or two calls neither of these
