combined total of 82 years of service to the univer sity are scheduled to retire july 1 dr edward d amstutz howard s bunn distinguished professor of organic chemistry becomes professor emeritus of chemistry after 34 years at lehigh h barrett davis professor and head of the division of speech becomes pro fessor emeritus of speech after 26 years of service francis j quirk curator of lenigh's permanent art collection and director of exhibitions becomes professor emeritus of fine arts after 22 years of service they will be honored at lehigh's 25th annual faculty dinner on may 18 along with major teaching and service award recipients and those faculty and staff completing 25 years of service amstutz who joined the faculty in 1938 is a native of detroit mich and will reside in lakeview ark a graduate of the college of wooster he received his ms degree from the institute of paper chemistry and a phd from cornell uni versity he was head of the chemistry department from 1960 to 1968 and was named to the bunn professorship in 1970 during recent years amstutz has re ceived several frederick gardner cottrell grants to perform kinetic studies of heterocyclic systems as well as rate studies on iminohalides he has written technical papers and articles which have appeared in chemistry and educational journals davis is a native of putnam conn and received his bli degree at emerson college which in 1959 awarded him an honorary degree he has been with lehigh since 1946 and has served as director of theater davis studied at the american academy of dramatic arts and the royal academy of dramatic art in england before coming to lehigh he held positions at the hotch kiss school conn southwestern univer sity and the hedgerow theater moylan pa he was founder and director of the cooperative players new london conn quirk joined the faculty in 19r>0 the pawtucket r.1 native did his under graduate and graduate work at the rhode island school of design at lehigh he served as chairman of the fine arts department from 19f>0 until 1970 winner of numerous art awards prof quirk's specialties are history of art and portrait and landscape painting his portraits for which poet edgar lee mas ters and author carl sandburg have sat as well as mayors and college presidents are in numerous private and public collect i ons . dr edward d ahstutz prof francis j quirk prof h barrett davis greek week activities net 1600 for cancer society by dave morrison an estimated 1,600 raised for the american cancer society a banquet at the hotel bethle hem and an outdoor concert in sayre park highlighted the activities of the annual inter fraternity council greek week most of the money raised was solicited from residents of bethlehem by the pledge members of lehigh's 31 frater nities included was a promise of 1,000 worth of services by richard t labarre chiro practor of 711 w broad st dr labarre stated that his services would be given to any patient sent to him by the american cancer society also included was the donation of 150 by the crowd the band which played at the sunday afternoon outdoor concert it is expected that the pledge class collections will total more than 450 when the money is turned over to the cancer society this week the recreational activities of greek week began wednesday with a beer drinking contest won under incredible circumstances by tom healy of phi kappa theta and robert mulholland of alpha tau omega chi psi won the toga relay race on friday and the bed race was won by sigma phi epsilon the best looking bed was created by alpha tau omega judging was done by prof steckbeck reinstituted for greek week was the ifc banquet at which dr frederic kershmer noted authority on fraternities and professor of history at columbia was principal speaker dr kershner spent twodaysat lehigh discussing problems related to fraternities and innovative areas of achievement with various fraternity groups bob moe 73 ifc president termed this year's greek week as creating unity on the hill he also emphasized that such ifc activities are not restricted to the fraternity system and that non-fraternity people are always welcome b&w photo by owl beta institution's per manent commitment to a faculty member a professor holding tenure is considered to hold his employment indefinitely advancing from associate professor to full professor effective aug
