equal to those of the other university colleges says john w hunt the college's new dean according to hunt lehigh has obviously had a long and distinguished tradition of really excellent education m engineering and technology it wants to have an equally distinguished reputation m liberal arts education hunt said that coeducation is a notable factor m change m the arts college the planners of coeducation for example expected the influx of coeds to increase the proportions of majors m english languages and fine arts as a matter of fact said hunt this doesn't seem to have happened lehigh's reputation m the sciences is justifiably strong consequently you tend to attract applicants who have the same interests so the women who apply here at least m the first few years are not radically different m their pattern of intentions career goals or educational hopes from men said hunt he added that this might change over a period of time but rapid change m the pattern of enrollment is doubtful the dean thinks the college will change mostly m the form of personnel the faculty on the whole is very distinguished it includes some extremely important and accomplished men the only way to improve a college is by filling every tenured position every teaching position with the best possible person available and never compro mising he said on an administrative level hunt notes lehigh appears to be more over structured and more cautious and more conservative as an institution than it need be m order to have the kind of excellence of which it's capable i would like to think that if i could help at all at lehigh it would be m loosening it up a bit giving it some flexibility and more than any other thing allowing good ideas to be implemented no matter where they come from one particular administrative problem confronted dean hunt's office during registration in this registration period there are too many bases to touch and routines to go through i cannot but believe some of these might be eliminated i really get upset when i see a procedure which requires students to go running around all over the place to get this paper signed and that paper signed and this waived and that taken care of overall hunt has been impressed with lehigh as a highly serious institution it takes a good deal of justifiable pride m its activities there's an undercurrent of real loyalty to lehigh which is probably one of its greatest assets there are a lot of people who have invested their personality m this place and they really want to make it work this is not just a job to these people this is a way of life that's the kind of thing which gives an institution its strength b&w photo by don murphy dean john w hunt band must audition women is verdict of year-long debate the marching band must begin tryouts for coeds immediately the forum ruled wednesday in other action a proposed change m the catalog's admissions state ment was returned to committee carl zvanut student affairs committee spokesman moved that the marching band be open dec 1 to coeds he stated that the band had m fact had time to reply to the forum when the motion was made last year but that on the recommendation of president w deming lewis the com mittee postponed the enactment of the motion to dec 1 zvanut added we hope they will work with the administration to make tryouts fair dean of women ruth a hurley argued that the delayed motion be defeated because sanctioning such a delay would show a lack of commitment she added that it was hypocritical for the university to congratulate itself for smooth transition into coeducation while the motion for female equality is defeated after dean hurley's comments an amendment was made to make the motion effective sept 6 passage on the floor would preclude a fair decision said band representative richard huddy j'73 huddy stated that the band had not had ample opportunity to state their case he explained that the band was m the process of compiling an original survey of other college bands lo support its position huddy pointed out that the band was m baltimore when the forum originally made its decision and was not officially informed of the forum's ruling until february huddy was asked what type of evidence the band could produce he replied that the evidence would of course be subjective adding that the only objective evidence the destruction of a high quality band would be produced too late during the questioning a forum member suggested that huddy was conducting a filibuster and that he be ruled out of order forum chairman prof dinsmore replied mr huddy is speak ing for 90 men the reply sparked a standing ovation from the numerous band members m the audience in other action a motion suggesting a change m the admissions statement m the catalog was returned to the academic affairs committee the motion divides the admissions statement into requirements for each college such that it would no dean ruth hurley and ed dennis debate the pros and cons of the band issue m front of the university forum b&w photo by the owl saucon valley apartment housing scheduled to open next foil by david muldberg construction has begun on the buildings which will house married and graduate students at the university the five structures according to clarence b campbell dean of residence is scheduled for completion m september 1973 the complex will be located m saucon valley bordering the road that goes to hellertown three of the five buildings will be virtually identical m design and capacity they will each have 16 one-bedroom apartments and 12 two-bedroom apart ments another building will have 16 efficiency apartments eight one-bedroom apartments and 12 two-bedroom apart ments the fifth building will contain 26 two-bedroom apartments and two three bedroom apartments creating a total of 148 units the builders will provide 156 spaces for parked cars with the option of an additional 100 spots if necessary campbell said that it is impossible to predict how many persons will be housed m these new living quarters it will depend on how the tenants opt to use each apartment two graduate students for example might decide to take a one-bedroom facility whereas two other graduate students might prefer a two-bed room apartment the cost of the project is 2,544,000 the occupants will be considered tenants and m return will receive treatment as though they were occupants of any apartment there will be custodial service but neither food nor maids will be provided dean campbell also commented on the change m freshmen housing regulations the forum decided last year to allow freshmen the option of living off campus the forum enacted this change of policy because it felt that a freshman should be entitled to the freedom of living off campus if he or she so desired ; the forum believed that a freshman should be given the same consideration as an upperclassman the forum also felt this action might tend to malaria vaccine sought by group led by heindel the u.s government has allocated more than 170,000 to a team of lehigh researchers attempting to cure malaria ned d heindel professor of chemistry is leading research to combat the disease which is afflicting american soldiers m vietnam among the 37 american research teams the lehigh group began working to develop the vaccine aided by phd candidates john minatelli and donald burns dr heindel has developed vaccines which will prevent contraction of malaria but has yet to develop one that will not have strong side effects the co-ordination of research projects is being handled by walter reed army hospital m washington all the clinical testing on mice chickens and mosquitos is also done here during world war 11 many
