college fowler proposes to set up task forces to study the questions involved with the need for new facilities and the details of adding them to the college he said the second phase deals with plans for the future and therefore it will be several years before anything really concrete will be done about the business school needs however fowler said that if it is decided to combine the proposed law school facilities and the needs of the business college separate funds that may overcrowding in williams hall will be investigated by p.p.&r by frank weinperl the priorities planning and resources committee pp&r at its meeting today will investigate the over-crowded con ditions existing in williams hall caused by the rapid expansion of the biology and geology departments the committee headed by w beall fowler professor of physics will assign special task forces to study the univer sity's overall science needs fowler said that the pp&r committee will study the details of the university's ten-year plan of renovation and make recommendations he said however that there are no guarantees that the recommendations will be acted upon since the pp&r committee has no real power or control over the budget j donald ryan chairman of the department of geology said that his department now occupies very nearly the same space it did when williams hall was rebuilt in 1955 even though the number of staff members and graduates has doubled ryan said that the department now has 10 faculty members 50 undergraduate majors and about 20-25 graduates a year at the time of the 1955 renovation there were only five faculty members and about 12 graduates a year additional space has been given to the center for marine and environmental studies ryan said ryan said the department is adjusting to the growth by partioning labs etc but said he is hoping for a new building at one time a new building for the biology and geology departments was given second priority on the university's renovation plans first priority being given to the creative arts ryan said richard g malsberger chairman of the department of biology said that his department also acquired no new space despite a rapid increase in the number of students taking biology courses malsberger said that two years ago there were 60 people in microbiology which means 15 students in lab every day of the week last year there were 98 students in microbiology which forced the department to schedule two evening labs and to offer the course both semesters this semester there are 104 students registered in microbiology i.e every lab is occupied every day of the week malsberger also noted that there are 212 students taking elementary biology courses i.e 10 lab sections and presently nine staff members an increase of only two over the last two years if i could throw out mr brody chairman of the psychology depart ment i would malsberger said the reason for the big surge in the b a w photo by john horsting prof w beall fowler education system inefficient says newman in neville talk by nance langton education needs to be updated said william newman assistant professor of psychology in the third neville lecture newman speaking last thursday on higher education in a rapidly changing society media communality and the future pointed out that education has always been a hideously inefficient process he suggested creating videotapes and cassettes for students and keeping graduates informed of advances in their fields as ways to improve education newman outlined a plan for professors to develop modules as a teaching method the module is a unit of instruction that uses videotape and cassettes to illustrate one concept ideally many schools would get together and pool their resources to develop these modules students and professors alike would benefit from this process newman explained students would be given the opportunity to learn at their own rate and interest the student would select information as needed to further develop his personal growth this in effect would tailor education to the individual and would not penalize a student by giving him an inflexible curriculum the motivation would be of the learning incentive not merely regurgitation for a test professors on the other hand would fulfill their normal roles of performer and actor but doing their demonstrations once and only once he said videotapes would be used for years until they had to be revised in this way newman added professors would work to perfect their presentations and feel free to use all available resources within the module the professor's job would be two-fold — to generate knowledge and to deal with students in a personal realm newman proposed creating teachers images as educational guides and not merely educational dispensers newman cited interaction among students and faculty as a major reason for keeping the residential university scheme interaction is essential to clarifying a given subject's effect on a person he added classroom situations would be held to discuss values and ideals and the impact a particular lesson had on a person in this way a student would learn more about himself and others newman said newman pointed out that education is not always a vocational thing since five years after graduation more than 50 per cent of graduates are not in their major fields he said that an important role of universities would be to inform alumni of advances in their particular fields he suggested that faculty members might make up videotapes and cassettes explaining new trends in a given field to be mailed to alumni cedar crest muhlenberg will collaborate on goals the boards of trustees from cedar crest and muhlenberg colleges met last tuesday and wednesday to announce the formulation of a five-year program of close collaboration between the schools the program will provide for the development and achievement of their educational goals and aspirations the goals of the cooperative effort are to identify and pursue those aspects of education which will enrich the caliber and potential of the institutions while preserv ing the autonomy of each college and to provide guidelines for other future cooperative efforts the boards of trustees adopted a proposal to establish a planning commit tee consisting of the chairman of the board from each of the colleges three elected members from each board of trustees and a chancellor to administer programs in cooperation with the college presidents the trustees also agreed on joint approval of new programs of study acquisitions and financing of new facilities and equipment the selection of a chancellor by september 1973 and an outline of the chancellor's responsibilities the appointed chancellor will be responsible for long-range planning in accordance with the individual planning functions of both colleges the review of annual budgets recommendations of new study programs and social activities and the solicitation of funds to support the upcoming programs each college has agreed to submit 20,000 annually in support of the cooperative program effort and to seek additional
