insidious chestnut blight is rapidly spreading its work of destruction throughout the east ern and northern united states and now is most virulent in new hampshire vermont massachus etts new york connecticut new jersey pennsylvania and dela ware today all that is left of the grove of spreading chestnuts are shoots which have sprung up from the stumps of the old trees botanists today have a very de finite idea of the causes results and character of the blight that destroyed almost every chestnut tree in the country the blight is a fungus parasite that attacks the bark and to a lesser extent the leaves of the tree the chestnut trees now growing on the campus have sprouted from the roots of the trees killed by the blight and because of this they are immune according to dr basil w parker instructor in biology however if seeds from these roots by l e klein elms magnolias maples wil lows beeches all have leaves on them now that spring has come everything is green except the chestnuts to which lehigh songs so often refer the campus has no groves of spreading chestnuts today only a few exist and they are small and scattered the reason for all this was ex plained in the oct 26 1915 issue of the brown and white during the present school year that iss ue of the paper stated the stu dent body has viewed with sur prise and regret the removal of a large number of the magnificent old chestnut trees that have adorn ed the grounds for so many years the reason for cutting down the trees was given by the superinten dent of buildings and grounds of that day it is very natural that the undergraduates and alumni view with distress the taking down of the many beautiful old chestnut trees which have adorned the campus since the days of the founder some of them for an even longer period of time the super intendent began fluently other trees saved this is however he contin ued a condition forced upon the george b curtis registrar at tended a regional meeting of the insidious chestnut blight is rapidly spreading its work of destruction throughout the east ern and northern united states and now is most virulent in new hampshire vermont massachus etts new york connecticut new jersey pennsylvania and dela ware today all that is left of the grove of spreading chestnuts are shoots which have sprung up from the stumps of the old trees botanists today have a very de finite idea of the causes results and character of the blight that destroyed almost every chestnut tree in the country the blight is a fungus parasite that attacks the bark and to a lesser extent the leaves of the tree the chestnut trees now growing on the campus have sprouted from the roots of the trees killed by the blight and because of this they are immune according to dr basil w parker instructor in biology however if seeds from these roots by l e klein elms magnolias maples wil lows beeches all have leaves on them now that spring has come everything is green except the chestnuts to which lehigh songs so often refer the campus has no groves of spreading chestnuts today only a few exist and they are small and scattered the reason for all this was ex plained in the oct magnificent old chestnut trees that have adorn ed the grounds for so many years the reason for cutting down the trees was given by the superinten dent of buildings and grounds of that day it is very natural that the undergraduates and alumni view with distress the taking down of the many beautiful old chestnut trees which have adorned the campus since the days of the founder some of them for an even longer period of time the super intendent began fluently other trees saved this is however he contin ued a condition forced upon the george b curtis registrar at tended a regional meeting of the
