brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday march 13 1973 mmmmmmmm vol 84 — no 41 215-866-0331 vandalism theft plague safety gear maintenance by 808 batcheler we take the commitment to fire and health safety very seriously said william jesse assistant to the dean of residence but the problem of maintenance of the university's safety equipment continues to grow fire extinguishers hoses and exit signs are stolen or destroyed as quickly as they can be replaced in campus buildings taylor hall richards house and packard lab are just a few sites of the vandalism and theft of campus safety equipment as an employer the university is responsible for the availability of fire extinguishers and the maintenance of safety equipment under a variety of city state and federal laws among these laws is the new occupational safety and health act of 1970 which provides for strict in spections by the department of labor and stiff fines for violations the university's legal responsibility for its students safety however ends with its compliance with the standards for the availability of adequate safety equipment the actual law is secondary to the concern for the students personal safety said prof wallace j richardson of the industrial engineering dept richardson a widely respected consultant on industrial safety said we certainly should have the discipline to preserve the means to protect john pearson tombstone presented by the university's globus series will be playing tonight through sunday at 8:30 p.m in town hall of bethlehem's city center pearson director of theatre at the university said that teleprompter has brought exclusive tv rights to the play teleprompter may either broadcast the production over the 100 cable stations it is affiliated with or may sell or loan it to a national network the production was almost held up by fire regulations when ronald drew bethlehem director of public safety complained about narrow exits and sawdust on the floor an irate delegation led by mayor h gordon payrow discovered the sawdust floor used for a western effect on thursday but the problems have been worked out since then pearson said pearson said that tombstone will be a theatrical production despite the television coverage the camera will pan over the empty seats before the show so that tv viewers will feel a part of the audience he said he said that he would like to see a move toward regional theatre productions such as tombstone regional college theatre he said could bring the theatre back to the people as it was in the days of shakespeare thought he wanted to help but now he said the position of commissioner fcr the bia is a sucide job there is a problem between indians living off the reservations and those living on them bruce said indian funds are not directly available for those who don't reside on the reservations there are problems between the indians and the government resulting from the broken treaties he added the historic reasons for the problem at wounded knee can be immediately traced back 20 years he said but two centuries of wrongs by the whites against the reds fill history with bitterness during the eisenhower administration bruce said the policy was to either terminate tribes from government stewardship or get other indians to move off the reservations he said the bia was to prepare them for the white world indians were bribed and forced to leave the reservations and they found outside life hard these people are returning to the reservations now and looking for power he said and this causes the clash between indians bruce looking back on his bia career said that the creation of the national association of tribal chiefs and the in crease from three to 18 indians in the top 21 bia film critic parker tyler who has for the past 25 years pioneered at titudes toward film as both a popular medium and an art will speak at 8 p.m tomorrow in packard auditorium tyler will discuss the movies and the hero myth an open discussion will be held at 4 p.m also on wednesday in the uc neville lounge a native of new orleans tyler has received grants from the ford foundation and the guggenheim memorial foun dation and lias been awarded a longview award for poetry his work has been cited for disctinction by the nation and the new republic among his writing since 1944 are books dealing with aspects of the film medium such as magic and myth of the movies hollywood hallucination and chaplain last of the clowns in ad dition he recently published a volume of selected poems also an art critic tyler is the author of the divine comedy of pavel tchelit chew and a number of monographs of master artists his other works include lorine tettheimer a life in art tyler's talk is
