the importance of the economic factor to a successful marriage dr will durant philos opher and historian addressed an audience of approximately 700 people on the problems of mar riage friday evening in the broughai high school auditorium marriage arose through the eco nomic usefulness of mate to mate and has developed from the prim itive institution of offspring with out mates to the modern institu tion of mates without offspring it is chiefly in these four phases of marriage that the problems arise the principal problems in these fields as named by durant are the stationary birth rate the delay of marriages because of eco nomic reasons the high birth rate among the lower classes and the low birth rate among the upper classes and the laxity of morals to give the biological aspect of marriage its due regard durant suggested several methods of in creasing the birth rate 1 to per suade earlier marriages and lar ger families the government should offer maternity benefits 2 the right to have children should be denied to the physically and mentally unfit 3 the income tax exemptions should be increas ed within limits with the addition of each child to a family 4 citizenship rights should be denied to unmarried people of 30 years of age or older and to married peo ple of the same age who are vol untarily without children 6 the government should increase the salaries of its employees with the addition of each child to a family to promote earlier marriages durant would also reinstall the dowry he himself gave his daugh ter and her fiance who was just a year out of law school a dowry of 5,000 to finance their marriage to restore the economic usefulness of woman to man the wife should continue to work after marriage until she is ready to bear children he said due to time lists must be pre sented to frank e smith ch e 42 at chi psi part of the sorcerer made his final exit with a my friends speech in the best fireside manner it was evident that the faculty had in deed been playing with the script perhaps devotees of simon-pure gilbert and sullivan would have frowned on such antics but the audience did not one scene for instance that nearly stopped the show was one in which dean wray h congdon playing the part of an elderly love-sick vicar sang through a maidenly impersonation of a girl answering no to a pro posal he sang the part in a high falsetto an idea which originated with the dean himself and not with either mr gilbert or mr sul livan the scene created such a tumult in the audience that it was evident that the vicar himself could hardly keep from laughing it was hard to determine who had more fun at the presentation of the sorcerer by the faculty chorus saturday night the 300 persons in the audience or the 32 members of the cast the drown hall version of the gilbert and sullivan operetta con tained quite a bit of dialogue that was not there when the authors originally wrote their script per haps the dialogue in question would have contained references to jack benny president roose velt nisky hill rittersville and the bethlehem water supply if such things were known about when the operetta was written from the time that lt samuel pierce
