lehigh university brown and white mmmmmmmmm vol 81 - no 19 bethlehem pa friday november 21 1969 ff6«-033l kasser johnson elected james kasser hal johnson charles unseld bill a i pert and don miles were elected to offices of arcadia this week kasser running for president defeated ron meisler by 544 points and marvin levlne by 667 points johnson won the office of vice-president over john ryan craig stoldt and robert brodie johnson outdistanced ryan who finished second by 636 points the largest margin between any first and second place finishers the race for treasurer was the closest with charles unseld defeating kenny rllander by only 86 points and mark russel by 368 points alpert won the recording secretary position by defeat ing ron klasko and jerry potack by 380 and 492 points respectively don miles captured the corresponding secretary position by easily defeating rich sedmak by 449 points and george weimer by 832 points the turnout for this year's elections was rather disappointing since only about 1,250 ballots were cast less than half of the student body last year the voter response was 1,692 the largest ever the election of both kasser and johnson indicates that most students are dissatisfied with arcadia's present position and wish to see arcadia have more decision making power and be more active in policy making the official results are president james kasser ron meisler marvin levlne vice-presldent hal johnson john ryan craig stoldt robert brodle treasurer charles unseld kenny rllander mark russel recording secretary bill alpert ron klasko jerry potack corresponding secretary don miles richard sedmak george weimer wt . ballot pot nts 1800 1256 1133 2055 1310 1068 665 1373 1287 1005 1519 1139 1027 1624 1175 792 jim kasser hal johnson solon hesitate then give ok to 73 march by dee mcallister tonight's pa jama parade came close to falling through wednesday night when arcadia threatened to remove its financial backing of the event after much dis cussion a motion to that effect was finally defeated four to nine with two abstentions debate about arcadia's financial support for the march came about as a result of the fact that many solons had thought that the lafayette weekend pajama parade and bonfire had gone out of existence a couple of years ago then it suddenly reappeared without their knowledge during the last week bruce berzln secretary and chairman of the finance and calendar committee introduced an emergency motion which stated in view of the fact that neither fcc nor arcadia ever lent official approval to the parade arcadia renounces any financial responsibility for the event norm monhait vice-president main tained that few frosh were interested in the parade and that the initiative for the post-game peace sought several campus groups have decided to participate in peace efforts to prevent violence during the lehigh-lafayette football game student marshals composed of the freshman football team and interested volunteers will be accompanying participants in the pajama parade to maintain order during the march and during the pep rally at the conclusion of the pep rally john steckberk assistant director of physical education will make a statement hoping the game ends in peace 1 student marshals from both lehlgh and lafayette will be present at the football game to prevent violence between the rival schools leaflets will also be distributed urging peace after the game the cheerleaders have also agreed to tr y to prevent violence during the post-game scramble for the goal posts john stokes 72 of the student mobilization committee be lieves the riots are hypocritical 11 to the younger genera - t ion's attempts to achieve peace in vietnam jack kime interfraternity council president said the marshals are unnecessary the lehlgh student should be mature enough to not allow a situation to develop the whole movement seems to be a bit out of proportion the alumni association estimates that over 4,000 alumni and friends will attend lafayette weekend activities which include a friday night smoker a pre-game luncheon and the lehigh lafayette football game the alumni will meet tonight in the hotel bethlehem at bp.m to participate in the smoker which is described by the alumni association as a pep rally for alumni university president w darning lewis and coach fred dunlap will be the speakers upon entering the stadium alumni and students will receive a free eight-page program reviewing the past rivalry of the two schools the special edition will be published jointly by the lafayette and the brown and white prior to the game the alumni leopard barbecue will be held in grace hall udall pollution can be checked by john zapf former secretary of the interior stewart l udali who served in that capacity for eight years mainly under the johnson adminis tration presented a lecture at cedar crest college wednesday night udall's talk 1976 agenda for tomorrow was chiefly concerned with the problem of conservation in america udall began his lecture with mixed reviews of the closing de cade as far as economic growth per capita income air travel space probes and gadgets are concerned the sixties has been the most successful decade to date 1 however said udall the united states has failed in two major areas the racial problem and the conservation problem he feels that steady erosion and deterioration of american rhc eliminates selectivity in all residence halls 13-8 by don lodge at its meeting last tuesday the resi dence halls council passed a motion which will eliminate the selectivity process in residence halls the motion which dic tates that all mcclintic-marshall sections and all centenial houses will be nonse lective was passed by a 13-8 margin with two abstentions at present residence halls on campus are selective to some extent since new members are asked to enter and once in the house become mem bers of that living group at last week's rhc meeting a proposal to randomly fill vacancies and eliminate rejectivity in the present system was defeated 10-8 with one abstention the subject of selectivity was repopned for dis cussion and last week's proposal was reconsidered but a new proposal was made to eliminate any form of selectivity the original motion proposed that selectivity be eliminated from upper class residence halls an amendment was added making it unnecessary for a student to obtain a living group president's sig nature to live in that living group al though definite plans for the new system were not discussed it will probably have a student fill out a preference list and turn it in to the residence halls office he will then be assigned to a living group of his preference according to the vacan cies available in those living groups this assignment system based sotejy on pre ferences will eliminate the tes traces of discrimination and selectivttv/which can exist even in " nonselective sections under a card-signing system several points concerning the concept of selectivity and the problems of changing the present system this year were dis cussed at the last meeting it was suggested that it was too late in the semester to establish a completely new system a change would greatly inconvenience fresh man because of lack of time and the proxi mity of exams there would be a mad rush by freshman to secure a room in a residence hall in case other alternatives failed it was also suggested that the prob lem of selectivity be left to next year's rhc which will take office this spring another argument presented against nonselectivi ty was that some living groups select their members in order to establish a group spirit and to better organize social and other events this argument seems to prove invalid since according to rhc president bob steinman select ivity does not insure a definite group spirit rick wlffen ' 71 , pointed out an excellent example of the fact that nonselectivity does not necessarily mean lack of group spirit in any freshman section all mem bers have randomly placed and a definite sense of group identity does develop he said see rhc page 5 see check page 4 see frosh pag 8 arcadia petitions petitions will be available for arcadia at • large elections at the student activities desk beginning monday nov 24 all petitions must be in by tuesday dec 2 at 4 p.m
