no positive action was taken although all conceded the merits and difficulties of carrying out the plan said president williams the plan is impractical we can not segregate engineering students from other parts of the univer sity dr williams stated there was unanimous agreement at the meeting that no curtailment of the course could be approved and the possibility of graduating 1941 classes before june was automa tically ruled out no haste necessary there is no evidence to show that there is any need for hasten ing graduation dr williams said in connection with the con tention that a gain of 12 or 14 weeks in the 1942 graduation would outweigh the loss to the de fense program in consultive or ac tive aid from engineer instructors who would have to spend the sum mer months in classrooms instead of the field president williams stated that the forced process would be de trimental to the education of the students and therefore the plan would result in inferior engineer ing graduates the finalists will vie for coveted places a recommendation that the stu dent concert-lectures fee be rais ed was made yesterday by the concert-lectures series committee in a letter to president clement c williams according to richard a ware arts 41 committee chair man final action of the proposed in crease in the fee will take place at a meeting of the board of trustees to be held sometime in the spring the student council composed of members of arcadia and the heads of each of the fraternities dormitories and town living groups a report issued by the series committee yesterday stated wholeheartedly endorsed the in crease at a meeting held nov 18 1940 the report also referred to the petition circulated during the re gistration period at the beginning ol this semester the total of 953 signatures is about 58 percent oi this semester's enrollment the committee report pointed out but more significant it is 64 percent of those who passed the checkers up until the time that the petition was closed the report further referred to the 233 ballots returned by stu dents in the audience at the con cert given by the eva jessye choir of that number 220 favored the increase the committee drew the conclusion in its meeting yester ctay that this ballot was a fair sampling of the student body majority favors increase from these facts the report continued it is justifiable to con clude that a good majority of the students favor the increase that a much smaller number remains to tally indifferent to the increase and that a still smaller group prob ably opposes the increase also discussed in yesterday's meeting was the list of applicants for next year's comittee.a selec tion of six applicants was made and will be submitted to president wiiliams for his approval the men were chosen on the basis of aptitudes activities interest abil ity personality and with atten tion being given to securing the proper representation among the divisions of the university ac cording to
