committee last year's freshman class sold 206 tickets which was a new record at the time the featured speaker will be william lone star dietz foot ball coach of albright college dietz will talk on some of the hu morous experiences occuring dur ing his athletic career in addition to his long athletic record dietz spent the three years following the world war as an actor and director in hollywood working principally in sports and wild west pictures during one summer while working with a stock company dietz made the ac quaintance of a young english ac tor named ronald coleman it was dietz's recommendation to direc tor victor fleming of m g m that started ronald coleman on his career in motion pictures while coaching football at lou isiana polytechnic lone star took over the coaching of the base ball team one season and turned in a string of 22 consecutive vic tories to capture the southwest conference championship during dietz's life as a coach such celebrated football stars as ernie nevers of stanford rabbit weller of haskell turk ed wards of the washington redskins dick hanley coach at northwest ern pat hanley coach of boston u and dave smukler of temple have worked under him the local council of boy scouts has started a training course for leadership in scouting all inter ested faculty members can enroll for the course announced dean wray h congdon at the faculty meeting held yesterday afternoon in the alumni building president clement c williams called attention to the conference of the faculties of lehigh valley colleges to be held march 13 at lafayette the committee members had hoped that the junior event would be the first major social affair to be held in grace hall those plans were abandoned some time ago when it became evident that the new have their publications studied and judged by practicing newspaper men other contests of this type commonly employ faculty mem bers as judges the lehigh confer enec at which the contest winners are the elections system of last year at the meeting of the combined councils last monday night after an hour's discussion by arcadia it was decided that a sampling of student opinion should be taken by asking for letters of opinion to be addressed to the elections committee after con sidering the suggestions and criti cisms received in this way the committee will formulate their final plan to be the library lighting have not been doing much studying there presi dent clement c williams yester day told a reporter that no chan ges in the lighting system will be made because of lack of funds the president who at 59 sel dom wears glasses added that he spent several hours last sunday afternoon and evening in the li brary and had suffered no ill eff ects for the past three years the editorial staff has been conducting a campaign for better library ill umination but it was not until the begining of the present school year that their efforts have become intensified up until that time no steps had been taken to remedy the situation survey was conducted a survey conducted last novem ber with a weston sight meter registering foot-candles for the purpose of comparing the light values in several locations with those specified in the code of lighting school buildings pub lished by the illuminating engin eering society showed that the lighting in the main reading room and the stacks was far below the minimum standards editorial manager william j meikle arts 41 who wears heavy glasses and who has borrowed 14 books from the library in the past week said last night i am amazed at the president's statement i know that all council members are constant users of the library last week i took out 14 books some of which i would have used there but the lighting is inadequate jesse f beers arts 42 another member of the council stated that he had studied in the library and found the lights objectionable donald r schoen arts 41 edi tor of the epitome and a member of the brown and white editorial council said last night if lack of funds is the president's reason for not improving the library lights it is perhaps understandable i don't see however how he can think that the present lighting fa cilities are adequate neither schoen nor beers wears glasses situation is worse in an article published in the brown and white dec 6 1940 andrew w litzenberger super intendent of buildings and grounds stated that the situation has been getting worse in the past few years when the reading room was built the ceiling was almost white and reflected the light whereas in recent years it has be come darkened giving the desired antique finish and consequently no longer reflecting much of the light at that time some progress was being made toward better library lighting george gipson of the general electric company and w r klemm of the klemm company both lighting experts were con sulted designs were drawn up and prices submitted the cost of equipping the east wing of the reading room with table lamps would be about 800 approxim ately 100 a table further objections which presi dent williams raised against a new lighting system included the task of removing or changing the pres ent lights to permit a maximum lighting efficiency he explained that table lamps would be very objectionable because they occupy table space and the glare of re flection by such lights is hard on the eyes will be toast-master and will preside over the initiation ceremony the student concerts-lectures series committee will meet at 4 p m thursday in the faculty room of the alumni building to discuss the applications of pros pective members for next year's committee the commitee will sel ect six juniors and make recom mendations to president clement c williams who will make the final appointments at this meeting the group will also continue its study of the pe tition signed by 935 students dur ing the second semester registra tion period and submitted by roy b cowin arts 43 who conducted a campaign among the students for names the results of the sample poll taken at the eva jess ye choir concert will also be stud ied the committee will discuss the suggestions and prices submitted by several lecture bureaus as well as musical divisions of major broadcasting companies regarding talent and final plans will be made for the last program of this term's series which will be a lec ture the library lighting have not been doing much studying there presi dent clement c williams yester day told a reporter that no chan ges in the lighting system will be made because of lack of funds the president who at 59 sel dom wears glasses added that he spent several hours last sunday afternoon and evening in the li brary and had suffered no ill eff ects for the past three years the editorial staff has been conducting a campaign for better library ill umination but it was not until the begining of the present school year that their efforts have become intensified up until that time no steps had been taken to remedy the situation survey was conducted a survey conducted last novem ber with a weston sight meter registering foot-candles for the purpose of comparing the light values in several locations with those specified in the code of lighting school buildings pub lished by the illuminating engin eering society showed that the lighting in the main reading room and the stacks was far below the minimum standards editorial manager william j meikle arts 41 who wears heavy glasses and who has borrowed 14 books from the library in the past week said last night i am amazed at the president's statement i know that all council members are constant users of the library last week i took out 14 books some of which i would have used there but the lighting is inadequate jesse f beers arts 42 another member of the council stated that he had studied in the library and found the lights objectionable donald r schoen arts 41 edi tor of the epitome and a member of the brown and white editorial council said last night if lack of funds is the president's reason for not improving the library lights it is perhaps understandable i don't see however how he can think that the present lighting fa cilities are adequate neither schoen nor beers wears glasses situation is worse in an article published in the brown and white dec 6 1940 andrew w litzenberger super intendent of buildings and grounds stated that the situation has been getting worse in the past few years when the reading room was built the ceiling was almost white and reflected the light whereas in recent years it has be come darkened giving the desired antique finish and consequently no longer reflecting much of the light at that time some progress was being made toward better library lighting george gipson of the general electric company and w r klemm of the klemm company both lighting experts were con sulted designs were drawn up and prices submitted the cost of equipping the east wing of the reading room with table lamps would be about 800 approxim ately 100 a table further objections which presi dent williams raised against a new lighting system included the task of removing or changing the pres ent lights to permit a maximum lighting efficiency he explained that table lamps would be very objectionable because they occupy table space and the glare of re flection by such lights is hard on the eyes all of the tables in the library reading room have highly polished tops nineteen juniors will attend a smoker of pi tau sigma honorary mechanical engineering society at 7:30 p m thursday room 262
