brown and white brown and white vol 82-no 32 806-033 i bethlehem pa tuesday march 2 1971 student critical in auto crash saturday night a 21-\ear-old university student was c-rlticalh injured saturday when his car struck two parke autos on wvandotte street m ilethlehem david u hunt of i 3 north terrace place valley stream n.y was admitted to st i nke's hospital with a fractured riu r ht leg severe facial and head lacer ations and possible internal injuries his local residence is delta phi fraternity according to police the accident hap pened between summit and bth streets on wyandotte street a witness reported to police that hunt was traveling north at the time of the accident police said hunt failed to negotiate a curve m the road skidded 99 feet and struck a car owned by madeline stoll of 744 wvandotte st they said that both vehicles then traveled 65 feet and struck another auto owned by julio cruz of ll wyandotte st all the vehicles then report edly skidded another 44 feet and stopped m the middle of the road a fire broke out at the scene and engulfed all three vehicles the bethlehem fire department was called to extinguish the flames a city ambulance took hunt to the hospital odk petitions for omicron delta kappa the national leadership hon orary society are available at the student activities desk they must be returned by wednesday at 4 p.m juniors and seniors are eligible whitaker auditorium although the actual program started an hour iaie the auuience wai uanleii wii.ii a pre-show performance en the drurcs the troupe d off with several dances featuring a wild dance m honor of the tribal chief m which the chief entered the audience flailing away at the air with his hands following that the black voices performed several selections mostly consisting of contemporary protest songs which were followed by several more dances the audience of 200 enthusiastically received this vibrant display of african culture williams cites importance of black self-determination by glen clark without black self-determination we cannot be liberated declared black nationalist robert f williams williams addressed the public friday night m whitstker auditorium he also concerned himself with several social and political problems including integration crome vietnam and the separatist movement he used various international experiences as a basis for his talk self-determination is defined by williams as the condition to forge one's own destiny under the present segregated conditions this is impossible " i still believe the integrated society is ideal williams sa;l but we must be realists no sector of society will liberate black people he said he added i no longer have hope for soivtng the racial problem through integration for this reason williams has been labelled as a black separatist but he prefers to be known as a self-deter minist he is not an advocate of racial segregation where one group considers itself superior to the other williams insists that a man must have self-deter mination the right to choose his own lifestyle and maintain human dignity the concept of self-determination wa the foundation on which the republic of new africa was based this potential nation provides an alternative to oppres sion and racism for blacks contrary to popular belief blark racism does not exist and the whites already there are free to stay according to williams a provision calling for an end to color and a class discrimination is written into the declaration of independence of new africa robert f williams panel urges new student image and reorganized prison system by dave morrison td like to see the day when a lehigh student isn't cartooned by a southsider as a drunk staggering out of the tally ho said james diefenderfer of the bethlehem youth fellowship during the fourth of a series of panel discussions at the wesley church referring to the social gap and the lack of understanding between southside youth and university students diefen derfer pointed to this as the basic reason why many students do not get involved m community affairs diefenderfer whose fellowship program is m the formative stages did acknowledge the great number of college students m the valley who are active m various programs other panellists m the discussion three kinds of involvement were richard cass executive director south terrace neighborhood center and john shannon executive director lehigh valley opportunity center l.v.o.c a halfway house for ex-convicts the discussion which lasted 90 minutes gravitated to and centered on shannon's work and his own prison experiences we bought dope from the medics we bought whiskey from the guards we would steal and murder the funny thing about it was we never had to worry about going to jail shannon went on to claim that society makes the criminal prison is society's facility to incarcerate him then on re lease society doesn't want him this is where his organization comes m the l.v.o.c houses parolees during their first months out of jail anybody who doesn't have brain damage can be re habilitated shannon believes responding at great length to questions from the audience shannon expounded on his philosophies to the general enchant ment of his listeners he called for true christian concern from the silent majority and involvement m addition to approval of social movements forum receives mandate over 75 candidates show by the attendance at this meeting it looks like lehigh students have voted up the forum stated john fields 72 forum representative fields made this comment m response to an article about the meeting's importance which appeared m the allentown morning call with the heading lehigh students decide forum's fate over 75 undergraduates and a few graduates attended monday's meeting m room 403 of the university center called for all potential forum candidates in addition to election procedures the importance origins and reapportionment of the forum were discussed interested students should pick up petitions from the activities desk sometime during the week of march 15-19 one per cent of the student constituency is required on all petitions for one to become a forum candidate " deadline for petitions will be approxi mately one to two weeks before elections and elections will be held sometime during march 28 and april 7 according to fields jim kasser 71 vice-chairman of the forum stated that the senior members of the forum will serve as the elections committee to supervise the elections discussing the need for an organization like the forum at the university instructor david amidon stated too often the students see themselves standing shoulder to shoulder against the bogey administration whereas most problems develop from differences m perspective between student and faculty members amidon added that the forum is the vehicle for lasting gradual progress m the university fields also noted the importance of student involvement m the forum not only of representatives but of all students stating that 66 per cent of the faculty will retain their forum seats while the students may experience up to 100 per cent turn over m
