lehigh university brown and white mmmmm 866 033 1 vol 82 - no 46 bethlehem pa r tuf-sday may 4 1971 margaret chase smith to speak at graduation u s senator margaret chase smith rep.-maine will deliver the principal address at the university's 103rd commencement exercise on sunday june 13 mrs smith is the only woman to have been elected to four full-terms in the senate and the first woman to have been placed in the nomination for president at a political convention in 1948 senator smith was elected to the senate by the highest percentage majority in maine's history smith served as a republican representative from the state of maine in the u s house of representatives from 1940-49 she is the only woman to serve tn both houses prior to being elected to the house of representatives tn 1940 to fill the vacancy created by the death of her husband the late clyde h smith she served on the re publican state committee as secretary to her husband during ms congressional service smith is the first woman to be elected to a leadership post in the senate being unanimously elected chairman of the conference of all republican senators ln 1967 in addition senator smith has served on the house naval affairs committee and the armed services committee in the senate she has served on the government operations committee , rules committee district of columbia committee and re publican policy committee in 1953-54 the maine senator was chairman of the ammunition shortage investi gating subcommittee and the reorganization subcommittee and is presently serving on the appropriations committee armed services committee space committee general officer subcommittee and bomber defense subcommittee a graduate of wilson college senator smith is the recipient of 50 honorary degrees in addition she holds the all-time consecutive roll-call voting record in the history of the senate with 2,941 consecutive roll call votes without a miss as of august 1968 at the commencement exercise university president dr w deming lewis will confer degrees on some 830 persons being graduated from the college of a.rts and last november's window-breaking incident at emery house and other events involving south side youth are discussed in a series of articles start ing on page three among contributors are don macßae robert thompson and barbara solt rotc students divide on value of the classroom by bill white i think most of what we do is pretty worthwhile most of the courses are worthless opinions on lehigh rotc cover a wide spectrum even within the system tom nash 74 an air force rotc student says we study defense systems offense systems and strategic defense maneu vers in the classroom all valuable fare for future air force officers but a sophomore army rotc student who wished to remain anonymous feels very differently about his classroom work most of the stuff we study s useless like army history the only thing that really prepares the rotc students for duty is the summer camp we go to lehigh's professor of mllltaryscience col ben l wechsler has an answer for that contention i just don't agree with that much of it the classroom work prepares them for that summer camp going to camp without that training would be like taking advanced calculus without theta xi cops greek week crown ifc collects 435 in cancer drive according to ifc president larry salerno the principal focus of greek week was a fund drive for the american cancer society not the winning of the greek week trophy in both cases however theta xi was the winner sixteen houses participated in the civic project and over 435 was collected salerno commented it's the cancer drive the most important aspect of the week we're doing something that's not just for ourselves lie also said that next year with more publicity we could get more frats to participate the winner of the first competitive greek week event the toga race was won by alpha sigma phi after that the traditional bed race was held sigma nu's stp turbine wedge copped the race with second place honors going to sigma phi epsilon later friday evening two tests of endurance would you believe iron stomach were held . . a beer chugging contest and a greeker eating contest phi sigma kappa won the beer contest and the greeker bout was taken by beta theta pl not too many people showed up for the tricycle race and kite-flying contest at 9:30 saturday morning although by 10 o'clock the crowd had swelled to over 100 noel dudley of theta xi was judged to be lehigh's finest amateur kite-flyer and was presented with a case of beer for his efforts fewer than 15 houses entered the tricycle race which was won by beta theta pi salerno was only mildly disappointed by the poor turnout however the race has a tremendous amount of potential he said on sunday nasty weather threatened the cockout and pie eating contest at beta theta pi and won by that house scheduled for 1:00 p.m the event started about an hour late and the second band was cancelled the bad weather contributed to the small attendance in the past the event has drawn over 1000 people b&w photo by camana beds bands debris and people are the main elements that composed the past weekend's greek week activity in spite of bad weather on sunday the week was termed a definite sucess calley trial psychiatrist to discuss vietnam tonight albert a laverne m.d eminent new york psychiatrist who testified in the recent court-martial of lt william calley will speak at lehigh university on tonight the talk which is open to the public is set for 7:45 p.m in the osbourne room of the university center immediately following the annual induction dinner of the lehigh chapter of pi sigma alpha national political science honorary dr laverne's talk is titled the military marijuana and murder and subtitled " atrocities fashion or syndrome he will discuss the whole issue of vietnam drug use by american troops and the atrocity at my lai an alumnus of fordham and georgetown universities dr laverne is senior psychiatrist at bellevue psychiatric hospital new york and physician-in-charge of the carbon dioxide researchclinic at the hospital he is a diplomat of the american board of psychiatry and neurology and a fellow of the american psychiatric assn he is a former president of the carbon dioxide research association a former executive vice-president of the society of medical psychiatry and he was executive secretary of the american society of medical psychiatry for six years he received the gold medal and award for outstanding achievement in medical research in 1958 and the gold medal award by the puerto rican college of pharmacists in 1965 for elevating standards of woild health tn drug research and therapy dr laverne is editor of the journal of neuropsychiatry the compendium of neuropsychopharmacology and the physlc'ans drug manual he is also author of numerous articles in leading medical journals newspapers and magazines and co-author of books on criminal
