lehigh university brown and white 866-0331 vo 79 - no 6 bethlehem pa - tuesday october 10 1967 regrets issued by mcnamara secretary of defense robert mcnamara has sent lehigh ms regrets again for the second time since last october he has not been able to attend founder's day ceremonies to receive an honorary degree university tradition does not permit the awarding of degrees in absentia so mcnamara again could not accept the honor dr charles seidle vice-president for administration said sunday that mcnamara cited the last minute pressure of duties tn washington as the reason he could not attend the ceremonies seidle said lt was impossible to determine whether or not the secretary would be invited back next year aa these things must be taken " step by step the cancellation of mcnamara's campus appearance forced post ponement of the students for a democratic society's demonstration outside grace hall since mcnamara's appearance waa the reason for demonstrating according to ira dember 68 coordinator of the demonstration there would have been no purpose in holding the demonstration an estimated 100 students from lehigh muhlenberg moravian cedar crest lafayette northampton community college kutztown state college and students from local high schools who were expected to demonstrate were told by phone saturday morning of the demon stration's cancellation ivemiier said that if the demonstration had been held there would have been an embarassingly poor showing of lemgh students a university spokesman was quoted as saying that lehigh had been looking forward to honoring such a distinguished citizen " but we clearly understand that a man ln mr mcnamara's position is subject to such demands on his time tlte spokesman expressed lehigh's regrets that the secretary could not come mcnamara was also forced to send his regrets ln oct 1986 as he was going to vietnam at the request of president johnson and would he out of the country when the ceremonies were held founder's day degree recipients of the bachelor of arts were named sunday by w ross ya tes left dean of the college of arts and science at the ceremonies in grace hall president lewis right conferred over 300 degrees including four honoraries lewis confers degrees four honoraries given dr w demlng lewis president of the university conferred four honorary degrees and over 300 bachelor's master's and doctoral degrees at founder's day ceremonies sunday the 300 degree recipients had completed curri culum requirements over the summer in the arts see founders 67 pages 6 & 7 business and engineering colleges and ln the graduate and education schools james b fisk president of bell telephone laboratories and founder's day speaker received the honorary degree of doctor of laws at the ceremonies which honor lehigh's founder asa packer others receiving the honorary degree were jack j dreyfus jr chairman of the board of the dreyfus fund and gunnar myrdal prominent swedish economist and author dr philip drinker co-developer of the iron lung received an honorary doctor of engineering degree robert s mcnamara secretary of defense who was supposed to be among those receiving the honorary doctor of laws degree was unable to attend and sent ms regrets speaking on science business and the um versity fisk said the task of the university is to develop the intellect to provide greater appreciation of human needs while teaching the fundamentals in specific fields which themselves grow increasingly complex fisk pointed out that both the telephone and lehigh originated in the same era and that " . . . the mid-eighteen hundreds were a period of rapid awakening to the great potence of science for doing things of practical usefulness and the founder of lehigh was thinking on these lines .." fisk also noted that the inventor of the telephone alexander graham bell was not a specialist such as an engineer but a humanist a teacher of the deaf stressing the importance oi a broad perspective and education fisk said that lehigh " strives for that healthy interaction in both research and instruction wmch must be the major aim of a uni versity so that the whole may be greater than the sum of its parts or that the separate disciplines may produce more than if they work n isolation . fisk said if the creations of science are outrunning our capacity to adapt we have to work harder to close the gap to be concerned as much with the social consequences of our inventions as with their contribution to the gross national product student movement proposes coeducation by brian young can lemgh be coeducational steve levy 69 and about 230 students who signed levy's mailing list ln the university center on friday tmnk it can george malone 69 barry orton 70 and levy head a movement whose aim and desire is to bring coeducation io the university admitting that the university is a big organization to buck levy feels that students when properly informed of the possibilities of coeducation will react favorably to the idea orton fears that the alumni in the interests of tradition may be the greatest opponents of the movement for coeducation on campus orton said it was clearly established at a faculty meeting last semester that the umversity could financially afford to build dorms for the coeds and smft to a coeducational system levy said coeducation would bring many benefits including a better social atmosphere and a more healthy psychological environ ment it would also give the college of arts and science a needed boost he said that with the addition uf girls life at lemgh would just be more fun at present the movement is something of a loose organization lacking policy and a name admitted levy however he said he hopes to solve these economists who are supposedly in the service of reason still are powerless to prevent this disaster the swedish economist and philosopher noted that the accelerating armament race irrational disarmament con ferences by the major powers and the growth of chemical and biological warfare techniques by the smaller nations all lead to the ominous feeling of ultimate world-wide destruction furthermore the small wars which are currently erupting and the inability of the united nations to handle them create an uncomfortable sense of living in a fool's paradise myrdal then turned to a discussion of today's wide spread social ills he said it ls the government's responsi bility to correct social and economic problems by long range planning and more positive action without more active government intervention there will be no solution to tne unreet arising from automation unemployment or the hunger crisis in order to aid the impoverished of this nation myrdal went on to say many americans who are well-to-do must plan to sacrifice some of their talent and means tms collecllvist philosophy is seen by myrdal as the true democracy upon wmch this country was founded finally myrdal discussed tbe economic and aoclal problems faced by many of today's under developed countries
