lehigh university brown and white vol 79 no 11 bethlehem pa _ friday october 27 1967 866-033 contacting rule change supported in poll of ifc by john seitz a straw vote taken of ifc members indicated there is strong support to abandon the existing no-contacting regulations on the lower campus according to sandy mcconnel 68 chairman of the ifc's special committee to investigate fresh man contacting there is more than the simple majority needed to bring about a change in con tacting policy mcconnel indicated that there is a " good chance that the change will occur in the near future possibly st the next ifc meeting mccotmel's committee is investigating three areas of contacting 1 contacting ln freshman residence halls 2 contacting on the lower cam pus and 3 contacting on the upper hill recommendations by the committee will be pre sented at ths next ifc meeting mcconnel indicated that the committee wiu definitely recommend free association on the lower campus and possibly suggest alterations in upper hill contacting mcconnel added that university regulations pro hibit any change in residence hall contacting . robert gould 68 president of the ifc said that there will probably be some pretty lively discussion when the committee give its reports but foresees a " good chance there will be changes made at the ifc meeting tuesday night john schmidt 68 spokesman for the eight fraternities that had originally opposed the cultural boost program that would permit freshmen to visit fraternities for cultural events proposed a freshman lecture series that would be conducted on the lower cam pus in order for his alternative proposal to be acceptable no contacting regulations would have to be altered schmidt strongly believes that pos itive action in the direction will be taken at the next ifc meeting also at tuesday's meeting thomas lutz 68 chairman of the rushing committee said that a meeting will be held sometime next week to inform freshmen about the fraternity system ifc then decided to choose two representatives from each fraternity to form ifc information teams that will explain the fraternity system to the freshmen in greater detail schmidt added that if the no-con tacting rules were changed these information centers could be held ln the university center or somewhere else on the lower campus lutz also stated that the nov 11 open house for town fraternities will be moved to dec 17 so that freshmen can attend the freshmen football game with lafayette in easton sandy mcconnel '*•. discusses proposed changes in con tacting regulations at regarding student misconduct off-campus charles w brennan dean of students and chairman of the committee announced the special meeting will be primarily concerned with the implications of the due process and double jeopardy sections of the disciplinary code with respect to off-campus activity when asked about the immediate reason for the meeting william l quay assistant dean of student life agreed that the recent moravian incident pin-points the problems in the discussion two lehigh freshmen were charged with disorderly conduct and breach of the peace after entering a moravian college women's dormitory in accordance with an unofficial agreement among the area colleges dean george stanley of moravian gave disciplinary jurisdiction to lehigh on wednesday oct 18 the committee decided not to act and moravian then filed formal charges with the bethlehem police explaining this action whlchquay said " broke all ■precedent brennan said that until last year the university disciplined off-campus miscon duct without giving specifics he said that last year students began agitating for their civil rights and expressed a desire to be responsible for their own actions the committee " leaned to this viewpoint when they reversed their decision to discipline the two students saluting the united states is the danish gym team now touring the country and scheduled to appear at 8:15 p.m tomorrow in grace hall the team performs modern gymnastics and danish folk dances in native costumes mucous maggot's aid rules ugly omar out " omar is not the ugliest man on campus after all it was discovered by alpha phi omega that omar had rscelved contributions from the " mucous maggot another freshmen entry and apo was forced to disqualify all the money received from omar's friday de byrd of lambda chi alpha ug liest man on campus jack shehab 71 vice-president of taylor e 2 the freshman section that entered omar said that he received approximately 50 ln dona tions from frank fleming 71 who was campaigning for drinker ivs entry the mucous maggot fleming gave omar the money believing that his 50 would not be good enough to place hia section among the top ten he had been advised hy robert shlve 69 chairman of the ugly man contest that in past years 75 or more has been needed to be one of the winning living groups in return shehab agreed that taylor e-2 would give drinker iv seven pairs of football tickets fleming said that he felt he waa act ing in the best interest of his section despite the fact that he don ated the money without the knowledge of other members of his section he added that there " wasn't time to hold a section meeting pointing out that later on there was unanimous approval of what hs had done gooch said that this was the first time there had been any frau dulent action in an ugly man contest preston parr dean of student life who was consulted by gooch believed it waa simply a case of " impulsiveness and that no one was consciously dishonest shehab said that taylor e-2 is upset by the disqualification since lt feels that only 50 of the total should have been disallowed and not all of friday's collections he wants 70 concerts were decided upon by arcadia wednesday night prices for the rhc concert with the association on feb 17 will be 3.00 and 4.00 per ticket with a student activities card and 3.50 and 4.50 without the card the class of 70 concert with the temptations on dec 9 will have ticket prices of 2.75 and 3.25 without student activity cards al borln 69 vice president proposed that the official procedure for emergency concert contract signing be by the approval of the chairman of the finance and calendar committee fcc and the president of arcadia instead of the usual fcc and arcadia
