lehigh university brown and white vol 19 - n 40 bethlehem pa friday april 5 1968 866-0331 pueblo captive contacts grad william emkey a graduate student in physics received a letter on march 15 from north korean prisoner barry iredale 111 captured with the u.s intelligence ship p«blo by the north koreans oa january 22 the letter urged the u.s government to make an open and official apology for the incident so that the crew can come home emkey and iredale graduated together from pennsylvania state university in 1968 emkey said that iredale graduated in mathematics and wanted to travel and see the world after graduation emkey said he had no idea how iredale had become connected with intelligence work of the pueblo's nature and that he knew iredale was one of the civilian oceanographers aboard the pueblo he noted that ha was sure the hand written letter had been written by iredale but he doubted that iredale had composed it in entirety emkey also stated that to his know ledge he was the only person to receive a letter from iredale apart from a couple of paragraphs written to him personally emkey said that the letter read much like letters written by other pueblo crew members james farmer discipline aired by marty marasco at arcadia meeting prof james diefenderfer cautioned arcadia wednesday night that the present system of discipline adopted in the fall of 1966 is a living tenuous life diefenderfer who is a member of the committee on discipline and a faculty advisor to arcadia cautioned the student government to be careful in selecting the new student representative to the committee on discipline he noted that procedures rules and regulations the official rules of the university have not been rewritten to conform with the present practices under the new discipline code diefenderfer pointed out that until this is done it is possible to revert back to the old system something he believes would be unwise he thinks that arcadia through careful selection of its represen tative to the committee on discipline and its influence with the administration can prevent a reversion to the old system diefenderfer was honored at the arca dia meeting for his service to arcadia he is leaving the university later this month on an academic trip to india and has been granted a year's leave of ab sence for the 1968-69 academic year arcadia voted to set up a five-man advisory council which would have the responsibility for the workings of the freshman class cabinet the group's primary concern will be to co-ordinate all the efforts being made on behalf of the frsshs&ss it will consist of a member of the arcadia freshman life committee the gryphon society rhc ifc and the town council arcadia also voted to create an ad-hoc lafayette weekend committee which will accept full responsibilities for organising all events for lafayette weekend in other business steve globus 69 presented a proposed revision of the arcadia constitution the proposal which is a significant revision of the present constitution will be discussed aft the next several arcadia routings interested students were urged to attend the meet ings to express their views by president startling results by dr w doming lewis university president who also has announced the creation of a committee on the quality of university life to do further investigation the report reveals that " incoming students to the university are more conservative in political and social views and less con cerned with social and aesthetic matters than a national sample of their college peers secondly students already in residence per ceive the university as one in which a practical instrumental emphasis is the predominant concern likewise the institution is perceived as possessing an aura of cool detachment collectively undemonstrative and somewhat insensitive to creative aesthetic interests finally scholarship is perceived as less characteristic of the university environment than that hold to be normative by a national sample of college sad university students the study was financed by a 1,000 appropriation from dr lewis two summers ago the original members of the committee were chairman francis j wuest chairman of the psychology depart ment preston parr dean of student life and robert jones assis tant professor of social relations last fall four members were added to the committee to examine its findings andrew edmiston professor of education wayne kraft professor of metallurgy paul miller assistant protestor of education and sutton monro professor of industrial en gineering lewis said that among the " startling results of the report was the fact that certain opinions of university students *' are very far from the norm the thing that is difficult to decide is whether this is good or bad being a little critical is a good thing look at our graduates our students are more successful than those of most other schools the committee on the quality of university lift is being cre ated said lewis because no one has been looking into the area of student activities the committee will investigate such areas as the kinds of ex tracurricular activities that eaw whether there are enough or too many cultural events on campus the desirability of more lee turers and faculty-student contact outside of the classroom the goal of the committee will be to inquire how the non academic part of the lehigh experience can be made more meaningful lewis said that the committee on environmental study and the administration agree that interesting things have bee turned up in the study but there were no definite clues oa what to do there have been no calls to action yet agreeing that the report contained food bast fide data lewis has asked the committee to make suggestions with a scien
