a proposal wed nesday to recommend to the university faculty at its next meeting the establish merit of on annual series of freshman seminars to begin in the fall of 1880 according to the report of took fores ea the freshman year a sub-committee of bd pol these seminars will be designed to profit end servo those intense young man of the freshman class who are fired up about the great issues of the day those woo have this particular brand of intensity are often among the brightest meet articulate and most influential of our students and the university profits enormously by serving them well and suffers greatly when they do not got some port of their intellect sharp ly focused early in the same on the sorts of problems that would **» the subject natter of any fb freshman seminar if approved by the fft^nfty three to flvs conusors open to all stmmvmen wi.i be ox tered par semester each student limited to selection of one enrollment will be res tricted to 15 students for each seminar classes will bo hold ons evening a week and will carry three credits acceptable as a general studios course in engineering or toward fulfillment of distribution requirements where appropriate the seminars will be structured about a common yearly theme each as n technology and society stress in our world or decision processes in modern culture they will be problem centered rather than oriented around a traditional academic i discipline problems chosen will te those which would generally te regarded as re lated to the most urgent issues of our age emphasis will te put on establishing a tradition of term papers projects or something of the sort which serve os a record of vigorous endeavor the seminar program would coma under the control of a director of freshman seminars appointed by the provost and a first-year freshman seminars ad visory board consisting of three mem bers representing each college and one student appointed by arcadia the director with the advice of the advisory board would recruit teachers for the program establish the annual theme for the seminars devise ways of se lecting students so as to limit enrollment while matching student interest with course offering insofar as possible and , constantly review the program with res pect to its objectives its difficulties and its counterparts on other campuses according to the task fores report " the present proposal is not offered as the an swer to the problem of the freshman year — for there is no such single problem the proposal la the test reedy answer lehigh university can give to what lo un questionably one important academic need " for students who into the course on fs would offer a useful experience la mapping cut intellectual terrains whose relevance even existence rates university residence halls rentals in both freshman and upperclass balls will be raised 25 per semester effective with the 1969-70 academic year it was announced by elmer w click university treasurer in announcing the rental increase which has been approved by the university board of trustees glick said that an increase in dining service charges will also go into effect in september 1969 glick stated that these increases in residence halls rentals and dining service charges result from rising costs of operations the rental increase will bring the current rate of 190 per semester in richards drinker dravo taylor and mcclintic-marshau to 215 per semester room rents for upperclassmen residing in the centennial houses will be increased from the present 210 to 235 in accordance with university practice changes in summer session residence hails rentals will not go into effect until the summer of 1970 dining service charges will increase by 81 to 28 per semester depending upon the plan to which the student sub scribes those on the 21 meal plan will be subject too 25 per semester increase bringing the board charges up from the current 290 to 315 a 22 per semester increase will bring the current 263 charge for the 17-meal plan up to 285 while a 21 per semester increase will mean that students on the 15 meal plan will pay 273 per semester starting in september 1969 as compared with the current 252 draft refusal brings arrest dove hawk a 26-year-old alientown man was arrested last monday in new york on charges of refusing induction into the armed forces he was released without bail and will face a hearing in scronton on friday hawk turned his draft card over to federal marshals in new york on oct 16 1967 he was eventually reclassified 1-a and this post july te refused tote inducted into the armed forces hawk became involved in anti-draft organizing early in 1067 and in october resolved to intensify my efforts to persuade other young men not to support
