officially announced today by wprsity president w deming lewis rndesraduates will occupy the264-man 2 million complex this week for the first netince the three buildings were com bed this summer dip six men to be honored for important tributfons to lehigh over a span of rs beginning in 1875 are the late rev john mcd leavitt the late dr charles thornburg the late dr natt m emery . late dean c maxwell mcconn dr e nne th smiley and dr wray h congdon the centennial houses marked a turning lnt in the financing of building at lehigh - construction project is the first of its ie to be financed by the university under lirect federal government loan the application for the loan was approved the board of trustees in april of 1962 a housing and home finance agency loan in the amount of 1.2 million was granted on oct 23 1962 the estimated cost of the complex at that time was 1.5 million some 770,000 short of the final cost the loan is self liquidating payable over a 50-year period with receipts from the operation of the residence halls the new residence halls one of the goals of lehigh's 22 million centennial develop ment campaign will accommodate upper classmen in six distinctive self-contained units each of which provides the atmosphere of a small living group the first floors of the three-story buildings are used for lounges and re creational facilities while the upper two floors are devoted to two man study bedrooms the centennial houses were dedicated during the centennial all-class reunion last june the special reunion launched the university's centennial observances which will continue through 1965-66 lehigh's 100th anniversary year the rev dr leavltt episcopal minister author and educator was lehigh's second president serving as chief administrator from 1875 to 1879 he was also professor of psychology and christian evidences dur ing the same period dr thornburg came to lehigh in 1895 and served as professor and head of the department of mathematics until 1923 for 23 years he was secretary of the faculty a position which included heavy responsi bilities in student administration dr emery joined the faculty in 1896 as an assistant in english and served successively as registrar assistant to the president and vice president and controller until his death in 1935 dean mcconn lehigh's first full-time dean was named to that post when it was created in 1923 he held the post which then consolidated administration of ad mission procedures registration student records and student advisory responsibili ties until 1938 dr smiley a member of the faculty and staff for a total of 33 years served as vice president from 1945 until his retire ment in 1964 and was secretary of the see centerfold story university's board of trustees from 1952 to 1962 he was on leave of absence from feb 1 1962 until he retired dr congdon served lehigh as director of admissions dean of students dean of the graduate school and as a special assistant to the president during
