lehigh university brown and white vol 77 no 3 bethlehem pa - tuesday september 21.1965 8660331 activities night attracts 1,000 the student activities night program waa termed a terrific success last night by robert t meadowcroft 66 chairman of the program william l quay assistant dean of student life and chairman of the student activities committee estimated that 600-1,000 students — nearly all the freahman and many wi_n»«-i^->«>»n --■■_*____.. t_c 1 organizations exhibits four-hundred students more than last year attended while an additional 18 organizations were represented most organizations reported increased attendance and recruitment many handed out flyers showed slides or displayed equipment interfraternity council the sports car club the outing club and mustard and cheese drew the most interest ifc described through pictures and pamphlets fraternity philosophy and rushing procedures the sports car club showed slides taken at the united states road racing championship in watklns glen last june the outing club also showed slides of their excursions and displayed hiking and caving equipment they collected a list of 100 interested adventureree mustard and cheese recruited 60 aspiring thespians with programs and pictures from past performancea richard a joklel 68 a member of last year's pennsylvania champ ionship chess club played five games simultaneously in the chess club's exhibit joklel won is games tied vie oflesh 68 and was defeated by dean marcus 66 who has defeated the chess champ in three student activities night demonstrations the religious groups on the fourth floor drew a relatively large number of onlookers but they signed up few recruits the young republicans had expected bethlehem mayor h gordon payrow to attend their exhibit but ha waa unable to make an appear ance for the first time in many years the e w brown astronomical society could tell freshmen who e w brown was brown waa an aa tronomer of the early twentieth century he specialized to planetary motion meadowcroft explained that all of the university's organizations were invited but only approximately 80 — - primarily participation organ izations interested in recruiting freshmen — set up exhibits b a w photo richard a jokiel 68 provided a marathon demonstration of his chess talents last night in the university center whan an estimated 1,000 students jammed the building for student activities night six townies are jailed after attacking student a 20-year old lehigh junior was attacked by six youths tuesday night as he walked from moravian college to the university john d randall who lives in the new thornburg residence hall was treated for multiple cuts of the head face and mouth at st luke's hospital and was released charles w brennan dean of stu dents declined to comment on the incident but offered advice to all lehigh students when in town travel with a friend but not with a gang especially late at night freshmen should not wear their dinks off campus report all attacks to city police and to university authorities almost immediately police pick ed up six juveniles for questioning in connection with the attacks according to police they are char ged with assault and battery con sumption of alcholic beverages and disorderly conduct five of the alleged assailants are still held in northhampton county prison awaiting action while the sixth was released in the custody of his grandmother all are 17 and 18 years old randall told the brown and white he was walking south on south new street at 10:40 p.m when he was passed by four youths one of whom hit him on the side of the head turning to face them he was hit from behind by two other boys he was then beaten about the head and was knocked to the pavement randall said that while lyingonthe pavement he waa kicked the at tackers fled when he called for help one of the youths later identified aa donald brown 17 of 907 wyandotte st tried to stop the at tack by putting up his arms and say ing " there are too many of you guys don't gang up on mm rand all said as he was running to the police station two blocks away randall encountered a policeman and told him of the attack just minutes before the police man had seen the youths harrass lng a car at a traffic light cars were dispatched to the area and police were able to apprehend all the youths within ten minutes four were found on sand island and two on broad street randall said he intends to sue for ef • despite woes students praise new complex student praise for the new resi dence halls this week over shadowed minor gripes and some interesting problems a resident of the smiley section of the centennial houses syd john son 66 said the way these dorms were built they had the in dividual in mind extra money waa paid for a lot of little things which make dorm living really nice some of those extras include stereo components in the library substantial parking facilities a game room in each section and television sets which are soon to deinstalled many students appreciate the fact that these luxury features are centrally located and grouped to gether on the bottom floor of each six 44 man sections the design of the modern build ing provides a relaxed atmosphere several students said they now felt part of a more closely knit living group in a sense similar to a fraternity andy goodman j'66 house president of leavltt said the new dorms have all the advantages of fraternity living without pledging or any nonsense one disadvantage lt w-oto by tom eloacd studying hard - a student living in the centennial houses discovers that studying can be bearable after all whan they are not studying residents spend much of their time in the large well furnished lounges playing bridge or ping-pong and listening to the stereo are other vry pleasant ways to relax girls gillespie set for 3rd frosh mixer freshmen will have another chance to mingle with the opposite sex saturday during the gryphon sponsored dink hop five hundred girls from ursinus beaver centennary and cedar crest colleges have been invited to help the frosh enjoy the music of matt gillespie and his orchestra only 800 tickets will be sold for the dance which will be held from 8 to 12 p.m in grace hall tickets cost 8.00 lehigh's varsity football team la scheduled to play the university of pennsylvania in philadelphia sat urday afternoon none of the gryphon rhc or arcadia officers contacted by the brown and white sunday knew of any transportation planned to take freshmen to the game bulletin the names of nine men includ ing elx alumni who will receive honorary degrees at the combined inauguration founder a day cere monies oct 10 were announced this morning by the university three guest speakers to be hon ored are dr nathan m pusey president of harvard university dr jerome b.wieaner,deanof the school of science at m i t the rt hon lord shawcross british statesman and legal coun sel the six alumni aretdr elmer c easton 31 dean of the rutgers university college of engineering j c gorman 10 co-chairman of gorman-rupp co mansfield leonard m horton 28 chairman of the board aubrey g lanstoo and co new york also jcenneth l isaaca 28 chairman massachusetts invest ors trust boston mass albert b maglnnes 21 partner in the law firm of kelley , drye newhall maginnea and warren new york and francia p sinn 04 retired metals industry engineer and ex ecutive past president of the mining and metallurgical society of america and a resident of mont clalr n j horton isaaca and maglnnes are membera of the board of trueteee sees luxury page 4
