lehigh university brown and white vol 77 — no 5 bethlehem pa - tuesday september 28.1965 866-0331 test takers aid proves best seller by neal arluck arcadia's effort to help freshman and sophomore test-takers has met with more success than it could cope with according o arcadia secretary stewart early 66 176 copies of a sample examination booklet went on sale sept 14 the booklets sold for 1.35 each and were all sold within an hour the purpose of the booklet was to provide freshmen with a study tool not necessarily an exact guide but something that would put them more at ease when taking quizzes and examinations early explained he added that the booklet was also meant to help residence hall and town students who are without the extensive files of exams which most fraternities have work on the booklet was begun last semester by arcadia's academic policy committee under the direction of early requests were sent to faculty members to submit sample examinations and quizzes in fresh man and sophomore courses ninety per cent responded to the requests following the unexpected sell-out of booklets early said 300 addi tional copies are being printed for sale by oct 4 they will be on sale near the post office in the university center plans are already being made for bringing out next year's edition of the booklet m three volumes each volume will contain the examin ations for one of the three colleges arts engineering and business it is expected that junior and senior course exams will be included early also revealed that the projected course evaluations supple ment to the university catalog is nearlng completion and will be ready soon work has started on this valuation last semester by the student evaluation committee this forthcoming booklet is designed to provide students with per tinent tacts concerning the work load and relative worth of the elec tives available it is not however a criticism or evaluation of in structors similar evaluations have been prepared at harvard the university of north carolina and the university of california at berkeley questionnaires were sent to selected students by the committee last semester the remaining members are now working with omi cron delta kappa the senior leadership honorary m the correlation of the questionnaires and preparation of the evaluation from the hundreds of questionnaires returned evaluations of about 50 elective courses will be made omlcron delta kappa is requesting other honorarles for funds to subsidize the cost of preparing the booklet copies are supposed to be on sale for 25 cents before pre registration m november b a w photo by casterijn crossroaders returned from a summer working m africa are from the left don cuneo 66 kirk haas 66 and steve rockow 6 lehigh students have not yet been selected for next summer's program assisting africans to build community projects crossroads to select 3 by dan gladding to work m africa three lehigh men — caught in the monday - wednesday - friday tuesday-thursday-saturday lock step—will spend next summer in africa and they don't yet know it the students will be a part of the crossroads africa committee according to dean of student life preston parr himself a member of the crossroads program this past summer don cuneo 66 kirk haas 66 and stephen rockow 68 spent their vacations m various african countries assisting in community projects including construction of health and youth centers and roads the crossroads africa program is designed to bring american and african students into intimate contact by having them work side by side on projects of use to the individual communities strictly a summer program it requires no lengthy training lehigh has been a participating member of crossroads since 1 961 , when one student participated the organization is entirely self supporting with donations from arcadia ifc rhc and campus chest money is also earned through the sale of lehigh calendars haas a member of tau delta phi spent his summer in malawi formerly nyasaland building a youth training center m the town of blantyre the building haas said is more a monument to african-american relations than a reason for going to malawi in the first place his real reason for joining the crossroads program was to become a part of the african society and to get to know the people on an equal basis most crossroaders according to haas find the experience culturally shocking haas and his group of 10 college students slept in an old tobacco barn had to boll drinking water and lived on a basic diet of maize meal and rice he said the female members of the group found this quite taxing rockow a gryphon found his group of nine in avrankou dahomey where they built a 60 by-90-foot maternity clinic in the village of pchitchao m togo west africa don cuneo a member of pi lambda phi helped build a small community center two lehigh alumni the rev alvord m beardslee chaplain and giuseppe is very nice but the bo must go by louis neureuter giuseppe a five and a ha if foot boa constrictor has received a mixed welcome on campus john trapp a junior in psi upsilon purchased giuseppe two weeks ago in an allentown department store he believes giuseppe is an ideal pet william l quay assistant dean of student life however ordered trapp to remove giuseppe by yesterday he reported receiving complaints from the psi upsilon house quay suggested the snake be given to the biology department he believed it would get proper supervision there trapp is reluctantly considering selling giuseppe back at a 50 i be.iiove dean quay is only trying not to set a precedent of permitting unusual pets m fraternity houses said trapp quay has seen neither giuseppe nor the wire mesh cage that houses dr francis j tremble y professor of ecology visited giusoppe uu caiiea mm a very nice snake he said giuseppe was very clean well fed and better housed than some students he explained that i don't give a darn whether the snake is removed or not i know of no faculty rule against keeping boa constrictors m fraternity houses a biology major trapp worked with snakes last year in the biology department he liked them and decided to get one he didn't think anyone m the house had objected to giuseppe snakes make ideal pets said trapp they are clean harmless and novel he noted that giuseppe is not poisonous his small teeth cannot break human skin he kills by squeezing his prey he could not eat and would not attack anything bigger than a hampster and he is afraid of cats and dogs trapp explained that giuseppe is much less harmful than the cats and dogs kept m other fraternities bit photo by dick holtz nice snake - john trapp 67 enjoys the company of his pot boa constrictor but university officials and someone from his house psi upsilon don't doadlino for removal of the snake was yesterday prof francis j trembley said it was a nice snake hop hijackers are foiled despite an upper-class attempt to hijack a busload of dates five hundred freshman girls from can tenary cedarcrest ursinus and beaver colleges were met by an equal number of frosh at saturday night's dink hop although matt gillespie was scheduled to appear h the gry phon-sponsored event he sent a friend vincent lee since he was not under contract to the gryphons lehigh's rum runners who have played during intermissions m recent years were graduated last year king coles combo filled the gaps saturday one gryphon reported few other attempts by upperclassmen to break into the freshman mixer this year but there was that one notable exception two fraternity men boarded the girls bus as it arrived on campus and directed it to williams ha 11 instead of grace hall it was reported however that none of the girls left ariih ths upper classmen the gryphon society said their profits on the dance amounted to 800 a spokesman said 600 of this will be used to sponsor addi tional freshman programs frosh buses set for mix at centenary the freshman life committee and cyanide will sponsor two buses to take freshmen to a mixer at centenary junior college friday buses will leave the parking lot m front of the university center at 7 p.m tickets go on sale m the arcadia office room 203 of the u.c at 4 p.m tomorrow the cost is 1.29 the mixer is also open to upper -
