members friday night that criti cism of administrative decisions is patriotic weekend draws 3,600 by ira dember busy upperclass parents upperclass parents weekend drew 3,600 students parents and relatives to a variety of special events from friday to sunday on friday evening the weekend got under way with a lecture by martin agronsky a television commentator and washington correspondent for agronsky spoke before about 400 in packard lab auditorium he discussed " world crisis in the ujs , dealing mainly with u.s policies toward vietnam agronsky said that the public has too much complacency about administration policies too much is being accepted without qualification he also traced the history of ujs policy and intervention in vietnam agronsky criticized the administration for not trying to negotiate hard enough with north vietnam he stated present policy that there must be a military victory before a peaceful settlement can be achieved this lecture was the first of the residence halls council's 1965-66 centennial lecture series after the lecture the residence halls council held a reception in mcclintic-marshal house earlier in the evening the university's parents committee held a dinner at the saucon valley country club with president w deming lewis as host on saturday morning some parents visited classes with their sons where they met instructors and other members of the faculty university buildings residence halls laboratories interdisciplinary study and research centers and the saucon valley campus area were also open for visits coffee was served during the morning at several " hospitality stations around campus including the lobby of packard lab the drown hall library the conference room of the physics building the alumni memorial building galleries and fritz laboratory upperclassmen parents and faculty members attended a luncheon at noon in grace hall faculty wives served as hostesses at the buffet luncheon during the weekend the university's permanent art collection was open to visitors the collection was on display in the university center and drown hall the special audubon exhibit in the university library was featured as was the " twelfth annual attitude on viet nam scored by agronsky by 808 bachmann the world in which we live is in a terrible mess veteran newsman martin agronsky declared friday in the first of a centennial series of lectures sponsored by the residence halls council speaking about the war in viet nam agronsky said it is time to ask as the war drags on if the policies of the president should be accepted without qualification without examination he emphasized to the 400 listeners that bl-partisan congressional support of the president is traditional in times of national crisis however he warned there is too much complacency about what the administration is doing in viet nam and these policies are being accepted without question responsible criticism need not be un-american and can in fact be patriotic he added agronsky discounted the official ujs statement that our purpose in viet nam is to support democracy and maintain free dom he stated that the whole thrust of the ujs effort has been toward a military victory rather than establishment of a popular government agronsky believes that we should admit we are in viet nam because we believe our own security la involved he said this is not a shameful situation but rather a fact of life we are supporting the south vietnamese because no one else can or will he explained agronsky tlso rejected the domino theory of asia put forth by the elsenhower administration the idea that the loss of one nation would mean loss of all of asia to communism he said resistance is develop ing against the chinese in southeast asia citing the recent rebellion in indonesia as a prime example he believes the united states should stand by and watch it happen agronsky favors negotiation with the north vietnamese in order to achieve a settlement although suggestions for negotiation have reportedly been rejected at least 15 times by hanoi he said we have never set forth the terms of the peace that we seek he questioned whether the vietnamese people really under stand democracy or for that matter communism he quoted the premier of south viet nam as saying the communists are closer to the people's yearnings for a better life than my government we cannot make the world in our image agronsky pointed out we must arrive at a mutual tolerance and respect if not love for other nations in order to face the future he added we must beware of the activists the people who want to answer our profound frustrations with black and white answers he feels that we must recognize the grays as well as the simple black and white
