morrow at 8:15 p.m in grace hall will be the highlight of this year's freshman weekend the weekend program will begin tomor row at 10 a.m with a coffee period for the parents followed by the convocations of the three undergraduate schools the arts and sciences program will be held in the osbourne room of the uni versity center the business administra tion program in the lecture room of drown hall and the engineering program in pack ard lab auditorium president w deming lewis and w g succop chairman of the university's parents committee will welcome parents at each of the three convocations which are designed to acquaint them with their son's curriculum faculty members and academic and extracurricular opportunities speaking at the arts and science convo cation will be dr w earlier in the day he will be honored by the sponsors at a luncheon in the rathbone room of the university center in the afternoon he will give a presentation speculations on the year 2,000 at the weekly three-hour international relations seminar conducted by joynt the evening presentation will be followed by a reception in kahn's honor at chi psi fraternity house in sayre park kahn is expected to use slides at both the seminar and evening appearances the evening program will include a question period kahn and his organization have been subjects of extensive press coverage this year the sunday new york times and new york herald tribune newsweek ujs news and world report and the new republic have all devoted attention to him kahn is probably the most widely read author in his field his latest book on escalation was pub lished in may he is also author of " on thermonuclear war and " thinking about the unthinkable in addition to scores of articles and research papers a physicist and specialist in national security affairs kahn is principal founder of hudson in stitute as its director he is responsible for the institute's overall research program and ac tively participates in announced was the formation of a student faculty subcommittee of the educational policy committee the new attendance regulation was approved by the faculty at its november meeting in announcing the policy change dr glenn j chrlstensen vice president and provost said the purpose of this action is to recog nize maturity and responsibility among the upperclassmen at the university where active partici pation in academic exercises is emphasized the new regulation which spon sored by the educational policy committee and the student life committee does not include ab sences front scheduled will be initiated as members of phi beta kappa national scholastic honorary society in university cere monies tuesday afternoon highlighting the day's program will be a centennial lecture by fehr on mathematics as one of the humanities at 8:15 p.m in the osbourne room of the university center the lecture which is open to the public is sponsored by phi beta kappa and the departments of mathematics and education following she 4:15 p.m closed ceremony in which the six men will be initiated as members of the honorary there will be a reception in the faculty lounge fehr who is presently head of the department of the teaching of mathematics teachers college columbia university received his b a degree from lehigh in 1923 and his m.a degree five years later he is the author of 13 mathematical textbooks and has edited and contributed to publications of the na tlonal council for tha teaching of mathematics and the organization for economic cooperation and development a native of bethlehem fehr is a former president of the american association for the teachers of mathematics a fellow of the american association for the advancement of science and many other pro fessional and educational groups honey man graduated in 1920 with a degree in metallurgical engineering and received an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters in 1900 he has devoted much of hla life to the collection of books dealing mainly in literature and tha history of science the honey man collection at the university which he presented in 1955 consists primarily of american and english literature following his
