brown and white vol 77 - n0.21 bethlehem pa - friday december 3 1965 866-0331 arcadia candidates consider issues by dan gladding a record 24 candidates will vie for nine student government seats dec 7-9 voting for the arcadia positions will be from 10 a.m to 7 p.m in the university center and will be open to any undergraduate ln the university candidates will present their platforms to all interested persons sunday night at 7:30 p.m ln room 308 of the university center because of the number of candid ates participating speeches will be limited to three minutes in the interest of presenting the candid ates and their platforms to the voters the brown and white has polled as many of the candidates as could be contacted on basic issues in the campaign questions included references to the honor system the role of a student govern ment arcadia's present role studenteval uations of courses and professors the severity of the academic load at lehigh campus safety the possible need to activate and unite the student body and specific areas tn which the candidates wished to see more student participation heal arluck sees no need for an honor system saying there is no serious problem of cheating he also thought that arcadia should have more say in the proceedings of the university and that it needed to rid itself of some of the dead weight now burden ing lt if lt is going to fulfill its role he sees much apathy on the part of students but feels this will be eliminated if arcadia becomes stronger robert becker is definitely in favor of an honor system feeling it will attest to the maturity of lehigh students he believes arcadia has been doing well ln student ad ministration communication but that there should be more interest ln arcadia which could be promoted possibly by lead ership conferences with other lehigh valley schools martin cohen is very much in favor of an honor system but was quick to point out that the referendum presently before the student body only proposes that the faculty be asked to consider such a system he believes the work of a student government should be confined to its campus •- lt should not sponsor marchers or other off campus activities rick coulston believes street lights are badly needed on campus but that safety is not a real problem he also thinks ar cadia has been a lame duck organisation ln that it hasn't listened to students sug gestions james find ley believes a student gov ernment should try to involve more stu dents ln campus affairs and should have a say in such things as curriculums he would also like to see more police patrols because of the amount of vandalism espec ially tn sayre park john gundersdorf feels arcadia ahould represent the student in nearly all phases of social and academic life where there is a need or request for representation he thinks a good deal could be done to promote student participation in off-campus ac tivities david kyler does not think lehigh stu dents are mature enough at present for the passing of the referendum but he doss see the need tor one in the future he feels that the lack of student participation in govern ment is the fault of the division of the stu dent body between dorms fraternities and town residences william lowe thinks arcadia should be one of the biggest voices of the student honor vote on principle not on specific system by neal arluck arcadia has placed itself unani mously behind a motion calling for the approval of an honor system ln next week's referendum also approved at wednesday night's meeting was a set of recommen dations for improvement of the library james e becker 66 students rights committee head moved that arcadia signify its approval of a " yes vote on the referendum arcadia's previous vote on the referendum did not indicate approval or disapproval of an honor system but merely approval of having a vote on one the motion passed unanimously president maury poscover 66 then explained that many students were under the mistaken impression that they were voting on the specific proposal that was released by arcadia poscover said that the students are not voting on this specific proposal but on the general principle of an honor system if the referendum is approved the specific proposal that will be presented to the faculty may or may not be the one which has been released arcadia also unanimously approved a motion by richard coulston 67 involving library services the proposal which could not be voted on at the last meeting due to the lack of a quorum called for an extension of library hours to midnight mon day through saturday the hiring of a check-out guard to check all books leaving the library and student representation of the library committee a survey will be taken in all living groups to determine stu dent reaction to keeping the library open until midnight a check wii also be made on the number of books that have been lost by the library harvey york 67 administration committee head announced that 1,450 people attended last week's wrestle off yielding proceeds of 903 the final total collected by this year's community chest campaign was estimated at close to 6,200 highest in the history of the campaign poscover expressed the hope that the registrar will release the final examination schedule before the christmas vacation it was observed in general discussion that some schools release the schedule when the student registers for a course the matter was referred to charles zall 66 of the academic policy committee for investigation aren't they the bitter end the bitter end singers a greenwich village group will sing in grace hall december 1 1 for a 2-a-ticket concert sponsored by the class of 68 see story page 5 conservative vs socialist old issues william f buckley staunch supporter of the conservative party and norman thomas the " grand old man of the socialist movement ln america have already spoken out on the topics they will probably debate monday at 8 p.m in grace hall admission is free to university i.d cardholders but a one-dollar donation is asked of other guests by the young republicans and ifc at a recent conference on civil liberties thomas criticized the administration's role in viet nam he mimicked the administration's excuse for intervention in viet nam we're protecting free-dom " now there is no vestige of democracy in viet nam nor any indi cation that anything is being run well . . . you don't earn friends by burning villages he said buckley a veteran debater is credited with having a sharp tongue he used his gift of gab well ln the recent new york city mayoralty race drawing 13 per cent of the votes as conservative party candid ate thomas has been associated with the socialist movement in america since world war i he has run for president six times on the socialist party ticket although thomas is a socialist he has been anti-communist since the mld-1930'5 communism he said will not be crushed by any military power but is now evolving away from the original hard-line doctrines the socialist has had much to say on johnson's war on poverty poverty is theoretically at least unnecessary the everlasting disgrace of humanity is the federal government's subsidies for crop reduction in a hungry world and he continued . . . the disgrace of our affluent society is the poor in the midst of plenty " i never thought lt the war on poverty was adequate . . you should have a war on slums in the magnitude of the cold war whereas thomas favors lbj's programs buckley rabidly attacks the president his administration policies and anything else the con servative can think of buckley has a debater's instinct for attacking the man at times rather than his deeds he quoted
