seats only stephen m wilcox 87 of chi phi and martin d cohen 68 of tau delta phi retained their posts after the record votor turn-out retaining seats by appointment were d'arcy w roper hi 67 of beta theta pi the interfraternity council representa tive harvey l york 67 of tau delta phi the representative of the junior class cabinet and jeffery h kapell 68 of congdon house the sophomore class cabinet representative newly elected to arcadia were william c lowe 66 of tau delta phi elliot e tepper 68 of beta theta pi richard c miller 68 of delta tau delta james e miller 68 of alpha tau omega james r oyler jr 67 of the gryphon society robert h becker 68 of smiley house and james w findlay 67 of chi phi other appointed members to arcadia xx were the residence halls council repre sentative james w winchester 68 of emery house constantlne m vasiliadis 68 of the town council and the freshman class representatives michael suverberg and al bonn eleven of the total 16 members of arcadia xx are newcomers the vote for the last few candidates was so close that a complete recount of the votes by the executive and election committees of arcadia was necessitated the vote tallying took five and-a-half hours twice as long as usual a total of 1 604 students voted for candidates as compared with 1,328 last year the votes were tabulated using the hare system under which a quota is determined as to the number of votes required to guarantee election the quota is set by dividing the total votes cast by one more than the number of candidates and adding one to the quotient any candidate who exceeds the quota on the first ballot is declared elected oyler was the only person in the election to win on the first ballot the votes of winning candidates over the quota are then split among the remaining candidates according to second preference on the ballot this is called a transfer following the transfer any candidate exceeding the quota is elected and the lowest candidate is removed from the race the loser's votes are then split in the same manner as above the transfer process is continued until all seats are filled wilcox waa elected on the fourth transfer lowe on the twelth tepper on the sixteenth and j miller r miller findlay becker and cohen on the seventeenth transfer stephen l mandell 66 lost his two year post on arcadia when he was edged out by cohen also losing his seat was richard w coulston 67 maury poacover 66 president of arcadia xix said i was very pleased with the election results and look forward to a hard working and effective arcadia roper chairman of the arcadia elections committee added we took all possible steps to insure the accuracy of these elections he also noted that all in all i think the campaigns were run very well to the knowledge of the election committee each candidate presented his views fairly and with no slander i would like to thank mr and mrs john durkee for tending the poles during the three days of the election roper however was displeased with election interest he said i waa especially disappointed with the lack of interest shown by the lehigh community with regard to the sunday night campaign speeches of the candidates honor system defeated 70 per cent vote no the arcadia backed honor system was defeated by the student body by a vote of nearly three to one in the 3-day arcadia elections completed thurs day night the final tally on the referendum was 1,115 against 429 in favor and 60 abstentions the no vote accounted for nearly 70 per cent of the total 1 604 votes cast a recent brown and white survey on the referendum which sampled the opinions of 100 students from all living groups and classes had predicted that it would be defeated by a vote possible as large as 68-70 per cent d'arcy w roper 67 chairman of the arcadia elections committee was contacted late thursday night after it was apparent that the referendum had failed he said i personally feel sorry that the honor system was voted down he added i feel that an honor system could work at lehigh and would aid the individual student in preparing for the challenges of adulthood i think perhaps the reason that the referendum was defeated is that too many people did not realize that they were not voting for a particular system but for the principle of an honor system haw photo by 808 butt ballot cast in this week's arcadia xx elections elections which ended yesterday by frosh sandy robinson graduate students made sure each student voted only once nine mem bers were to be chosen from the 23 candidates for election christmas vespers to conclude weekend syracuse weekend will close sunday with the presentation of christmas vespers by the chatham college choir the lehigh glee club and the university brass ensemble in packer memorial chapel the 4 p.m vespers open to the public will feature a program of christmas carols for the first time since 1961 in the past three years the service has featured a performance with orchestra of major works for mixed chorus the chatham and lehigh groups will each present separate portions of the program but combine under the direction of prof lorenzo malfattl of chatham in a se quence of carols the combined choirs will perform in a setting by phillip hattey distinguished british com poser and conductor concluding with vaughan williams unison version of " god bless the master of this house opening with a candlelight pro cession the participants will then sing gustav hoist's " on this day with brass accompaniment and will conclude with a traditional candle lighting ceremony a few of the selections to be sung by the glee club will be the gasquln " gloria " puer natus which will be sung in the original latin and the famous harry slmione chorale number the little drummer boy the brass ensemble will ac company the choirs and congrega tion in three traditional christmas carols in addition to its own program of renaissance music for brass instruments especially suitable for the yule season bitter end singers perform tomorrow caesar and cleopatra the bitter end singers and the lehigh wrestlers pitted against defending eastern champion syracuse con stitutes a diversified december weekend the 1:30 p.m performance in grace hall of the bitter end singers will serve as a prelude to the weekend's climaxing event the 7:30 p.m wrestling meet against syracuse defending liwa tit list according to albert c cook 68 who is in charge of the con cert arrangements the ticket sales have been moving briskly mrs luella fuckinger the student activities assistant said that all of the tickets she had tieen alloted were sold by tuesday afternoon and that she had requested and recetved 100 more the singers who specialize in what they term a dixieland-rock folk mixture of music have appeared at numerous american colleges and universities and have also appeared on tv the group is composed of two girls and three boys vilma vac caro iias worked as an actress and as the featured singer in a las vegas ice revue while her female counterpart tina uohl man has done many parts in summer stock theatre in west virginia lefty baker an actor and form erly with the folksters plays the banjo and the five-and twelve string guitars bruce farewell also plays these instruments and was at one time a solo folk singer the last member of the group kenneth hodges a writer of music has done concerts with dave brubeck and pete fountain while he was a member of um folksters pi kappa alpha will have a private reception for the singers immediately after the concert the bitter end singers will participate in syracuse weekend festivities by presenting a concert of folk rock and dixieland tunes in grace hall tomorrow afternoon other activities.in clude the mustard and cheese play tonight
