brown and white vol 77 - no 28 bethlehem pa tuesday february 8 1966 866-0331 dean of engineering chosen prof john j karakash distinguished professor of electrical engineering and acting dean of the col lege of engineering since oct 13 19f>5 today was chosen to be the new dean of the engineering college karakash assumed the position of acting dean fol lowing a request by dr alan s foust at that time tlie dean of the college that he be permitted to return to full-time teaching here at the university karakash has been a member of the faculty for 20 years and has been the head of the department of electrical engineering since 1956 foust who re signed his post because he had " never been enthus iastic about administrative work thus returns to the teaching position he requested at lehigh where he has served for 14 years — four of them as dean of his college the appointment of karakash to the top position m the university's largest college is effective immediately the new dean through the years he has served at lehigh has effected several innovations m the electrical engineering curriculum which have greatly enlarged its scope both on the undergraduate and graduate levels probably most significant among these innovations has been the establishment nf a program combining the university facilities with those of the hahnemann medical college m philadelphia whereby electrical engineering students may go directly into medical college after completing the university's program centered on the interaction of engineering and medical education this new program brought about primarily be cause of karakash's interest ln its possibilities includes the regular curriculum ln electrical en gineering with a modification to incorporate necessary courses tn biology and chemistry and a summer assignment at hahnemann dean john j karakash school of education set the university has formed a school of education from the former department university president w deming lewis told the faculty yesterday at their regular meeting dr john a stoops was named as the first dean of the univer sity's sixth major academic divis ion dr stoops said " this action by the university is gratifying m that it points to lehigh's recog nition of the highly-crucial prob lems which are involved m the study of education and ln the training of people for leadership m our u.s schools " lehigh's department of educa tion has remained as a department for such a long period of time because this kind of organization made possible strong relationships with the academically excellent departments on the university's campus he continued " the new school has been developed m such a way as to preserve these close ties which for a long time have been recog nized strength and have resulted m a dynamic interaction so bene ficial to professional and academic development of students stoops added in the planning and development stage for several years the new school will have five academic divisions and will continue its close involvement with the other colleges at the university stoops will report directly to dr glenn j christensen provost and vice president of the university the directors of the five initial divisions are dr john s cartwright who will head educational administration which is the training division for eiwa grappletube program canceled by dan gladding due to lack of decision on the part of lehigh students the " dodecagrand grappletube pro ject — closed circuit television coverage m grace hau of the eastern intercollegiate wrestling association tournament at the university of pittsburgh -- has been dropped " maybe some other year said g thomas lang 66 chairman of the student committee which is planning the project the main reason for dropping the project was a lack of consumer decision i'm sure the interest was there lang said but the people did not take their interest and buy their tickets early enough the program was intended to sell up to 2,500 tickets for the march 11-12 match various price ranges would have allowed a student or a student and his date to see the quarter-finals on friday night and the semi finals and finals on saturday night kirk pendleton former eastern and national wrestling champion of lehigh would have joined sam connor lehigh's director of public information m announcing the bouts the cancelling of the event has resulted ln a 700 loss which will be absorbed by the sponsoring organizations — the junior class and the residence halls council " we are particularly pleased that the two groups are tionally-known economist and pro fessor was made director of the newly - established center for business economics dr bratt was promoted from head of the department of economics to asso ciate dean for research m the college of husiness administra tion dr n i*aul loomba became the first head of the department of management science which is now formally a part of hie husiness college dr loom is a leading authority on productions manage ment and operations research dr finn h jensen will income acting head of the department of economics replacing dr hratt dr jensen an authority on the kuropean common market,origin ated and now directs the foreign careers major the center established through a recent gift from the late mrs alan m scalfe of pittsburgh will be associated with the national association of business kcorio mlsts the clearinghouse project of thai association is directed al the university since 1-962 with one of the nations first masters degree pro grams in . management science considerable interest in business circles has l>een shown in the study with the new department being an outgrowth of that interest management sct-tlry a rela tively new study offers a separate degree from other degrees in business administration the field deals with scientists employing linear programming replacement theory and other tools of analysis ln management the business college reorgan ization follows a 1965 nationwide survey in scientific american which places the university m the top one-per cent of institutions placing leaders m u.s industry see buyers page 8 see ed page
