brown and white vol 77 no 30 bethlehem pa - tuesday february 15 1966 866-0331 cop thwarts break in by dan gladding the person or persons respon sible for breaking into the alumni memorial building early friday morning have not yet been appre hended according to bethlehem police the apparent burglary attempt was frustrated by a campus police man before the door of the bursar's office could be opened patrolman eugene l dax jr was shot and slightly wounded at the lookout at about 12:30 a.m shortly after he had seen a person run out of the north side door of the building leaving behind assorted tools dax was treated at st luke's hospital for a superficial wound of the left arm which he des cribes as " just a shoulder scrape he had been patrolling the campus looking for the thwarted burglar when he was shot at by someone in a car at the lookout dax returned a shot at the car as it sped away and is fairly sure he hit the car because i heard the bullet hit metal and there's ho other metal at the look out a flicker of light inside the alumni building had originally attracted dax attention as he passed by on a routine patrol he pulled the patrol car into the back parking lot and opened the door into the basement as he entered he saw some files and a hammer lying on the floor near the door he then heard a noise and saw someone run out the side door dax in turn ran back to his car hoping to catch the person on the other side of the building or in the immediate area patrolling the campus he saw a dark older-model car with several persons in it but could not tell the year or make because it was foggy and raining out which made it hard to tell as he approached the other car its headlights came on tempor arily blinding him dax turned on the flashing red light of the cruiser and pulled up next to the other automobile as he pulled alongside the window on the driver's side and the right rear window of the patrol car were shattered by a bullet as the oar drove off dax jumped out of his car and returned the fire he then ran back to his car where he realized he had been shot dax said that authorities are assuming that the persons in the car were the ones who broke into the building " when i came up there they must have thought i knew they were the ones in the building or they wouldn't have shot back at his car dax radioed bethlehem police for help at 12:53 a m and the response was immediate however a search on lehigh grounds did not turn up the wanted car an inspection of the alumni building revealed an open window through which the burglars prob ably obtained entry the molding was pried off the door to the bursar's office but the door had not been opened this is just the beginning - dave lewandowski left president of the phi kappa theta fraternity attaches pledge pins to the coat lapels of freshmen eugene kudges center and alan highhouse following the fraternity's pledge dinner saturday night freshman president opposes rhc rules by neal arluck the freshman class doesn't like the rhc constitution freshman class president casey cogut charged at last friday's arcadia meeting that the freshman class is under represented and deprived of adequate funds cogut complained at the first meeting of arcadia xx of the freshman class underrepresenta tion on the council although rep resenting more than half of all students in the residence halls the freshmen are outnumbered 16 to 4 on the council cogut charged that this has resulted in the oppressive dom inance of upperclassmen causing freshmen to receive far less from the council than they put in he referred specifically to the matter of revenue derived from concessions in the freshman res idence halls cogut next raised the issue of the qualifications of a member of the council a clause of the new rhc constitution states that no member of the council may be a pledge or member of any social fraternity cogut said that this regulation was ridiculous when applied to freshmen he pointed out that three of the four freshman repre sentatives the freshman house presidents were about to become fraternity pledges and thus would be removed from the council after heated exchanges between cogut and winchester harvey york 67 arcadia president told cogut that he should first take his complaints directly to rhc he suggested that if cogut did not receive satisfactory action from rhc he should then come back to arcadia york reported on friday's in formal luncheon meeting on rushing problems attending the meeting were the arcadia execu tive committee dean brennan and representatives of ifc and the gryphons york called the meeting successful and regretted the absence of a representative of rhc vice-president jeffery kapell 68 announced that applications for arcadia a oclates are due this friday arcadia approved unanimously the following committee chairmen as appointed by the president william lowe academic policy stephen wilcox freshman life aldo borln foreign opportunities robert becker student rights jeffrey kapell finance and cal endar james flndley social con trols james miller and elliot freshmen protest - freshman class president casey cogut voices complaints at the arcadia meeting friday that the freshman class is under represented on the rhc and re ceives far less from the council than they contribute dravo house protests fine to arcadia a 400 fire equipment breakage fine levied on dravo house was protested at friday's arcadia meeting by michael sllverberg 69 treasurer of dravo house and a newly-elected arcadian a fire extinguisher case glass was broken on four separate occa sions and dravo was fined 50 100 100 150 for the lnfrat ions the case was in a lounge in dravo not in any particular section james winchester 68 resid ence halls council representative bids go to 463 totol rises by 42 by tom roberts freshmen accepted a record total of 403 bids to i.ehlgh social fraternities last saturday the figure represents an increase of 42 over the number of new pledges at the same time last year in addition 17 freshmen accepted contracts extended by the gry phon society last week the freshmen were chosen from about 200 original applicants i phi kappa theta with 27 pledges had the largest number of possible new members kappa alpha was second with 23 follower by theta delta chi with 21 tau delta phi with 20 sigma phi ep sllon with 20 phi gamma delta with 19 delta rhi with 10 and alpha slfrna phi wfth 18 delta tau delta manager to pledge only four men alpha chi hho was the second lowest with h pledges eighteen fraternities had be tween 10 and 15 pledges the aver age pledge class for the 31 fraternities was 14.9 men part of the large inr rea.se in pledges may be explained by the larger incoming freshmen class the many new fraternity houses and the supposed quality of this year's freshman class according to don watson 67 rushing chairman phi annua delta fraternity was fined 75 by the ifc this year for dirty see cogut page 9 see pledges page 6 see rhc page 4
